Introduction

Spirituality is an important aspect of life and is often intertwined with religion and belief systems (Larson & Larson, 2019). It is a personal connection between the individual and their environment, and it has the potential to shape our attitudes and behaviors, as well as our relationships with others. My own worldview of spirituality focuses on the interconnectedness of all living things and the power of love and compassion. This understanding influences my practice of patient care as I strive to provide a holistic approach to healing.

My Conception of Spirituality

My conception of spirituality is centered on the idea of interconnectedness and mutual respect for all living things. I believe that we are all connected and that our actions, words, and thoughts have the power to affect others. In my view, spirituality is about inner peace and harmony with oneself and the environment. It involves cultivating a deep appreciation for nature and a recognition of the spiritual energy that exists in all things. I also believe that spirituality involves connecting with something greater than oneself. This can be done through meditation, prayer, or other spiritual practices.

In addition, I believe that love and compassion are essential elements of spirituality. These qualities can be expressed through kindness, empathy, and understanding. Love and compassion are also essential for developing meaningful relationships with others, which is an important part of spiritual growth.

How Spirituality Influences Patient Care

My conception of spirituality influences my practice of patient care in multiple ways. First, I strive to provide compassionate and empathetic care to all patients. I believe that the patient-physician relationship should be built on mutual respect and understanding. For example, I always take the time to listen to patients and understand their concerns. I also strive to provide patient-centered care that is tailored to individual needs and preferences.

Second, I believe that spirituality can play an important role in healing. I strive to create an environment that is conducive to achieving spiritual wellbeing. For example, I often incorporate meditation, prayer, or other spiritual practices into my patient care plans. I also encourage the use of alternative treatments, such as music therapy and aromatherapy, to help patients achieve a greater sense of peace and harmony.

Finally, I believe that spirituality can be an important part of the healing process. I strive to create a safe and supportive environment in which patients can explore their spiritual beliefs and practices. I believe that by understanding and connecting to something greater than oneself, patients can find peace and comfort.

Conclusion

Spirituality is an important aspect of life and can have a profound effect on our attitudes and behaviors. My own conception of spirituality is centered on the interconnectedness of all living things and the power of love and compassion. This understanding influences my practice of patient care as I strive to provide a holistic approach to healing. By incorporating spiritual practices into the treatment plan, I strive to create an environment that is conducive to achieving spiritual wellbeing and can help to facilitate the healing process.

Spirituality is a term that can mean many different things to different people. I think today there is so many ways to express spirituality. Spirituality can be having a deep connection, idea, or feeling of life. Not only about a higher power. According to Bogue & Hogan (2022) Spirituality is a dynamic and intrinsic aspect of humanity through which persons seek ultimate meaning, purpose and transcendence and experience relationship to self, family, others, community, society, nature and to the significant or sacred. I think spirituality can be a higher being, nature, or whatever one wants it to be. Spirituality is a belief in something, anything that gives you faith, hope, comfort. I think spirituality can influence patientcare in many ways. One being that being ill or having a surgery can be very stressful and people tend to looks for some sort of peace or comfort. Ones spirituality can help guide them through healing. As a nurse knowing a patients spirituality can help you to better provide care and comfort they may need.

Spirituality to me is someone or something that has a higher power that influences life decisions, thoughts, beliefs, morals, and outcomes and serves as a guide for individuals in every aspect of life. Spirituality is a difficult topic for me to discuss with family members as it has been engraved throughout nursing school, at least in my experience, that politics and spirituality should not be discussed as patients and their family members can possibly have conflicting values, thoughts, or beliefs. Studies have shown that nurses are very aware of how important the concept of spirituality in nursing is, however, lack an understanding and the education of how to implement such care (Harrad et al., 2019). The way I allow my conception of spirituality influence the way in which I care for patients is by letting the patient guide me through their spiritual norms and beliefs and helping me understand them and guide me in taking care of them. I know that my ultimate purpose is to be in these patients lives to promote wellbeing and the greater good and that’s my reward.

Spirituality, to me, involves the recognition of a sense or a belief that there is something greater than myself. There is something more to being human that this sensory experience. What we are a part of is cosmic or divine. I believe that if I am part of the good in this world, good will also come my way. “Spiritual people are more altruistic, compassionate, and forgiving of others because they identify with what connects–rather than what separates–them” (McGinley, 2018).  With that kept in mind, that mindset helps me care for my patients.

When caring for my patients and helping them meet their needs, I am also meeting my spiritual needs. I am successfully being part of the good in this world every shift. I provide my patients with compassion, and I forgive them when their moods change, as I know their position must be hard to cope with. I call and arrange for spiritual consults because some patients may experience spiritual distress. Spiritual needs are needs whose satisfaction promotes spiritual growth. These patients heal and thrive on communication with others, communication with god, and prayers full of hope. I am so thankful I get to be a part of others’ spiritual journeys even if they differ from my own. For that I am grateful.

The nurses’ view of spirituality can indeed influence the way you take care of patients. According to Nilsson (2021), by reducing stress, anxiety, and the challenges of daily institutional life, it may be argued that a self-care regimen that includes attentive body scanning, prayer, and contemplative walking can assist nursing staff cope with challenging job-related situations. Mindful body scanning can be viewed as a method that addresses both the physical and the mental dimension by bolstering the body and reviving the brain, as in a holistic, multidimensional approach to medicine that addresses, in total, the physical, mental, social, and spiritual/existential wellbeing of the individual. Even while prayer primarily targets the spiritual and existential aspects, it might benefit the body’s internal processes when done while moving. There are several physical advantages to walking as a kind of exercise.

Title: PHI 413 What would spirituality be according to your own worldview?

According to my worldview spirituality means that there is more to life than just living on earth. It is my personal belief knowing that my life has significance beyond existence. Personally, it means seeking meaningful connection and having faith in God. My beliefs shape the person that I am today and as I go throughout my life, I tend to thrive for peace, acceptance, and gratitude.

When caring for a patient, I believe that it is necessary to separate spirituality to avoid ethical dilemmas while still maintaining a sense of compassion. I believe that people have the right to make their own decisions therefore, I would not combine my personal beliefs and opinion when caring for patients. I would try not to be judgmental on any matter and let the doctor take the lead in advising the patients. I understand that even though I will not always share the same views as others, I try to find it in myself to respect and understand their views. It is important to also take into consideration one’s culture, ethnic background, and religious beliefs when caring for patients. I would just try to care for the patient in the best way possible, focusing on the quality of care and maintaining an open mind.
