Throughout the class, I will be posting assessments as simple tools to collect data on learner progress in order to improve it. An assessment is the process of observing students in the process of learning in order to redirect teaching and make it more efficient and effective. The assessments will take on different forms and shapes as the need demands.

Because of their importance in learning, it is vital for the entire class to participate. I will be posting the assessments as a reply to one of the two DQ’s in each module, on Monday mornings. Look for the word ASSESSMENT in all caps in the post title. Students who participate in the assessments will receive credit for a substantive post.

As DQ #1 is a discussion of what spirituality means to each of us, I would like to kick off with a related question about worldview, one which will also be helpful for our paper due this week. It’s been said that there are seven worldview questions, each of which makes up part of what a person believes about the world. I’d like to invite you to take one of the seven questions below, and in your DQ answer it according to what you believe. Please note I am not looking for a “Christian” answer or a “right” answer; I am more concerned with having you think it through for yourself. If you want to tackle more than one question, feel free, but one is all I will require.

I look forward to hearing your thoughts! Here are the seven questions:

  1. What is ultimate reality? (That is, what is the ‘really real’, the foundation of all that exists?)
  2. What is the nature of external reality, that is, the world around us?
  3. What is a human being?
  4. What happens to a person at death?
  5. Why is it possible to know anything at all?
  6. How do we know what is right and what is wrong?
  7. What is the meaning of human history?

PS: A worthwhile exercise is to try to answer all seven for yourself on your own, and make sure your answers don’t conflict with each other. Unfortunately, for many of us our answers are not necessarily in tandem, but we don’t even know it until we pause to think it through.

How do we know what is right and what is wrong?

When looking at the difference between right and wrong, it is pretty obvious to us what those two words mean. For something to be right, this is what is acceptable and for something to be wrong, it is essentially unacceptable. But the whole thing is, how do humans distinguish this? Well, it all starts during childhood. To start, humans have a conscious that guides them. A person’s consciousness is also known as the voice inside of someone’s head that tells them if something is right or wrong, but this can also be a gut feeling as well (Stevens, 2019).

This is a complex idea of what drives right and wrong in people. But for someone to distinguish right from wrong, it is not just about the individual person. It is about how the individual was raised and depends what values they learned while growing up. Throughout life, humans go through a lot of changes and have different experiences that allow for growth. Another thing is that can impact how someone perceives right from wrong is also human history and what is relevant in the current times.

If we look through history, there are a lot of questionable things that people have done where they thought they were acting within their morales and they were right. But we can see that from a different perspective, it was wrong. Even today, with world events, there are questionable things going on. So, all of this is important to tell right from wrong. In health care, it can be difficult too because healthcare professionals are tasked with making decisions that can impact the patients’ lives (Biber, 2022). While it is important to consider what is important to us, it is also important to dig deeper and see If something is actually right morally.
