Explanation of Philosophy in Nursing Practice

With many years of experience in critical and emergency nursing, my approach to patient care revolves around providing holistic support. When it comes to looking after a person’s well-being, physical health is only one part of the equation – we must also consider their mental, emotional and spiritual needs (Anderson et al., 2005). To ensure quality treatment for all patients, building trust between them and myself requires attentive listening skills and compassion towards those who are vulnerable or struggling with cultural differences. My mission going forward is not just maintaining but expanding on what I have already learned; obtaining further knowledge through completing my DNP program will enable me to deliver evidence-based practice, thereby increasing positive outcomes from healthcare provision.

The Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) is an opportunity to become a powerful agent for social change, advocating for improved healthcare policies and practices. As part of my studies at Walden University, I am particularly focused on the implementation of diversity and inclusion training for medical providers so that they may better comprehend their patients’ needs from unique perspectives while improving communication with them – ultimately resulting in higher quality patient outcomes (Anderson et al., 2005).

Additionally, I plan to actively promote increased access to healthcare services among underprivileged populations living in rural areas by initiating telehealth programs and collaborating with community-based organizations. My mission is to work towards eliminating health disparities within these communities through sustainable solutions that are based upon equity, fairness, respectfulness and solidarity.

In general, my philosophy of nursing practice revolves around providing holistic care with a focus on active listening and cultural sensitivity. As I further develop my skillset as a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP), I must commit to evidence-based practices in order to maximize positive patient outcomes (Baumrim, 2004). Additionally, I will work diligently towards improving access for underserved populations while advocating for the integration of diversity and inclusion training within healthcare providers. Philosophy of Nursing Practice

It is exceptionally important to me that healthcare providers exemplify the ethnic diversity of the communities in which we serve. The cardiovascular epidemic in the African American female demographic is something that resonates with me, because that demographic is me. Our coronary artery disease (CAD) mortality rates are substantially greater than our non-African American female counterparts (Graham, 2015), and it is my innate responsibility as an African American woman and healthcare provider to positively impact and reduce that statistic as much as possible.

Ethnic Disparities Amongst Registered Nurses in the United States

The most recent statistics show that only 6.7% of Registered Nurses in the United States identify as African American, compared to 80% of those identifying as Caucasian. (AACN, 2023). Moreover, the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN, 2022) denoted during their round table discussion, that only 23% of practicing APRNs in America are non-Caucasian. These statistics are important to denote, given the concept of patient/provider concordance. Provision of patient-provider concordance supports cultural competency, improved communication, and an overall improved patient experience (Takeshita et al., 2020). Moreover, the perception of a patient satisfaction has been correlated with improved clinical outcomes (Kennedy, Tevis & Kent, 2015).

As a DNP, we have the unique ability to influence the future of nursing via continuous improvements in educational and institutional policy. As a [future] Walden DNP social change agent, my calling is to be an exemplary mentor and innovative leader in my community – encouraging current African American nurses and prospective nursing students to continue their education into advanced practice, leading to cultivation of positive and trusting clinician/patient relationships, all serving to improve clinical outcomes for our demographic.

Goals for Expanding DNP Experience and Practice

I have already started this mentorship/leadership journey by developing a cardiac RN residency program. My objective is to strengthen the cardiac educational foundation of inpatient nurses, including ECG dysrhythmia interpretation, medications, cardiac imaging studies and more, because the only way to improve the statistics that affect my community and healthcare demographic along with improving outcomes is to truly understand the problem(s) at the core.

A Personal Philosophy of Nursing Practice

I am an advanced nurse practitioner (APN) passionate about providing healthcare for the mental health population. I have been a registered nurse for 29 years, with 12 years of clinical practice for mental health clients. Drissi et al. (2020) suggest that mental health issues are a global concern. Patients with mental health disorders within my community face many barriers that impede their ability to live productive lives.

Drissi et al. (2020) state that there is more than one way to provide services and address the needs of this at-risk group. All patients deserve equality of health regardless of their diverse situations (Drissi et al., 2022). My philosophy of nursing practice is to provide quality patient-centered healthcare that improves the health outcomes of this vulnerable population. 

Philosophy of Nursing Practice, Setting Goals, and DNP Practice

To provide the best healthcare delivery approach, I must develop and implement my philosophy into practice based on my personal experiences in nursing (McEwen & Wills, 2019). I have cared for patients with good and bad health outcomes. I desire that each patient gain a positive experience with my healthcare approach. My philosophical view of nursing is derived from my personal experiences with patients and their responses to treatment within my specialized area of working with patients with mental health disorders. 

My goal is to improve global health outcomes and enhance the discipline of nursing by earning my Doctorate of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree. McEwen and Wills (2019) mention that the strength of the nursing profession depends on the reliability of applying scientific knowledge and using philosophical concepts as frameworks in practice. My personal belief is to respect patients and their wishes.

My goal is to deliver healthcare that encompasses moral values, compassion, and advocacy so that all patients can live and function at their best level of functioning. Exploring a phenomenon is derived from personal experiences and perceptions (DiBartolo, 1998, as cited in McEwen & Willis, 2019). Expanding my practice as a DNP through empirical knowledge will allow me to explore phenomena and further broaden my philosophical views on improving the health conditions of the mental health population.

Walden’s DNP Social Change Agent

The American Association Colleges of Nurses (AACN) Essentials (2006) will foster my growth as a DNP-APN social change agent. Walden also supports the DNP student’s advocacy for social change by empowering them to use reflective practice tools, collaborative practice, ethics, and scholarship application of skills (Walden, n.d.). Walden has incorporated core educational values and integrity that will enable the DNP student to transition into a social change agent, enhancing the DNP-APNs’ ability to implement excellent and uncompromised healthcare for all patients.

Walden (n.d.) provides an educational process that enables the DNP-APN to engage in practices that integrate knowledge into practice. Walden’s DNP program is structured to allow the DNP-APN to educate patients through autonomous decision-making based on rational and evidence practice research. 

Transitioning to a DNP-APN will strengthen my confidence and motivate my ability to provide patient advocacy. Social change agents are expected to understand and develop their concepts for their specialized discipline (Walden, n.d.). Emotional distress, such as post-traumatic stress disorder and suicide, are leading causes of suicidal attempts (Drissi et al., 2020). I plan to diagnose and treat patients to help minimize their symptoms so they can function in society at their best levels.

I want to implement programs to decrease healthcare disparities amongst the mental health population to improve the patient’s health conditions while increasing suicide awareness programs and the availability of resources.  One example is to provide healthcare that will minimize suicide attempts and manage emotional distress among patients who suffer from post-traumatic disorders.

This is a significant social change idea because one way for a new graduate or new hire to learn is from someone with extensive experience in nursing from all types of backgrounds. Coming from a surgery PCU, we get a lot of patients seeking pain medicine eight weeks post-surgery and routinely coming back related to pain. Some nurses label these patients as drug seekers, and that should never be the norm to classify patients who are seeking pain relief even if they become frequent flyers because they’re still a patient at the end of the day and were there to help, treat, and assist with promoting the best quality of life to their potential. Collaborating among your team members to bounce ideas from one another and ask for guidance for EBP to provide quality, safe care is fantastic.

As DNP students, we must look beyond the besides and be able to teach the new nurses the way of EBP to promote quality care and nurse satisfaction. (Yoon, Wilson & Olson, 2023) The philosophy you believe is compassionate and critical in caring for the patient and being an advocate. My philosophy for nursing is to educate and be educated. I want to create an environment where if a nurse has a question, it will be answered without belittlement and to promote knowledge. (Durepos et al,. 2018) The future of nursing is to build on the knowledge new nurses receive from their school and make sure they’re confident to take patients while providing EBP care. (Duchscher & Corneau, 2023).
