Nursing Theory and Practice

Nursing philosophy refers to the shared ideas about the nursing profession that inform nursing practice, research, and scholarship (McEwen & Wills, 2019).

In conjunction with professional experience, these shared values form an individual nurse’s nursing philosophy. My experience at the medical-surgical ward is similar to those of others.

With the variety of socioeconomic problems that patients and their families face in addition to the pathologic conditions of the patients, I have learned to listen to the patients’ concerns and to explain in simple language the terms used in the diagnosis, medical and nursing interventions, evaluation, and prognosis of the conditions affecting the patients. In addition, I have learnt to interact with patients and their families in regards to the additional assistance they may receive from non-profit groups in addition to government agencies. The clinical experience I have obtained has enhanced my ability to empathize with patients and their families and to comprehend how their sociocultural perspectives and resources influence their responsiveness to healthcare interventions. In addition to advocating for patients and the profession, nurses must also serve as a guide for patients and their families in restoring and maintaining functional health. In this sense, I have decided to enroll in the DNP program at Walden University because I believe it will prepare me to make a substantial scientific contribution to the creation and evaluation of ways to healthcare delivery for both individual patients and other patient populations.

A DNP role would enable me to obtain a managerial position in the emergency department, for example, by contributing to the implementation of changes in one department in order to improve healthcare delivery and practice across the institution. Nonetheless, the outcomes of the activities related with the DNP position will depend heavily on what I learn via study and collaboration with Walden University’s instructors, mentors, coaches, and fellow students.

Personal Nursing Practice

Philosophy of nursing practice include the nurse’s ethics, values, and beliefs, as well as their motivation and commitment to the profession. According to Glasdam et al. (2020), the philosophy of nursing is founded on the nurse’s perspective of their practice, education, and ethics in patient care. My nursing philosophy may be summed up by the main concepts that I seek to live by in my everyday practice, namely, to provide all of my patients with empathic, holistic, culturally sensitive, and high-quality care. According to Farokhzadian, Nayeri, and Borhani (2018), nurses are required to continue updating their knowledge and abilities in order to provide their patients with high-quality and effective treatment.
Keeping this idea in mind, my nursing philosophy also includes the conviction that I should never stop studying and enhancing all the necessary abilities for my practice, such as honesty, kindness, persistence, integrity, compassion, and evidence-based knowledge. Moreover, Nunnery (2019) claimed that the nursing profession is all about compassion. Based on Jean Watson’s caring theory, I feel that my nursing practice should be characterized by real concern and empathy for patients. In addition, it is believed that health reflects life quality.
This idea has so contributed to my personal and professional self-actualization in nursing.

DNP’s function as a social transformation agent

While providing care for patients with acute trauma in a hospital setting, I realized how important it is for nurses to be committed to improving the long-term quality of life of patients who have experienced trauma or are suffering from multiple acute and chronic diseases after they have left the hospital. Similarly, while working as a nurse in intensive care, the post-anesthesia care unit (PACU), and day surgery, I realized that health is a dynamic condition that can readily transformed from wellness to sickness in reaction to external pressures and environmental circumstances. Thus, my professional objective is to continue to be exposed to a variety of critical care and problem-solving scenarios that will enhance my DNP-level abilities, knowledge, practice, and experience. I also aim to participate in tackling global health concerns, which will allow me to strengthen my DNP practice. According to Zaccagnini and Pechacek (2019), the DNP nurse has a crucial role as a social change agent since they can promote positive social change by leading quality improvement programs and evidence-based practice innovations. To earn a Walden DNP, it is crucial that I am not overwhelmed with compassion and care for patients and their families, and that I assist them in establishing trusting and lasting connections with nurses. This will enable me to advocate for meaningful social change in my daily practice as a DNP student at Walden University.
