The clinical manifestations of impulsivity and compulsivity are diverse and frequently overlap with many other psychiatric disorders. Some people act rashly and have difficulty saying “no” to certain things, such as using illegal drugs or spending money, whereas others engage in compulsive behaviors with negative consequences. In some cases, these impulsive and compulsive behaviors exacerbate addiction problems. To assess and treat patients effectively, you must first understand how these disorders differ and how their symptoms affect patients and their families.
This week, you will research the assessment and treatment of patients suffering from impulsivity, compulsiveness, and addiction, as well as therapy for these disorders. You consider the ethical and legal consequences of these treatments as well.
Objectives of Learning
The students will:
Assess patient variables and history in order to establish tailored therapy strategies for patients suffering from impulsivity, compulsivity, and addiction.

Assignment 1: Assessing and Treating Patients With Impulsivity, Compulsivity, and Addiction
Patients of all ages struggle with impulsivity, compulsivity, and addiction. Impetuosity is the tendency to act on immediate impulses or desires; patients describe impulsivity as living in the present moment without consideration to the future (MentalHelp.net, n.d.). As a result, patients with these diseases are more likely to experience poor effects as a result of their conduct. As an illustration, an individual who suffers from compulsivity engages in this behavior in an attempt to alleviate their uneasiness (MentalHelp.net, n.d.). Addiction is the result of a person’s impulsive conduct becoming compulsive as a result of the prevalence of these behaviors.
Psychiatric nurse practitioners (PNPs) play an important role in helping patients identify and treat the root causes of their mental health issues. Consider how you would assess and treat clients with impulsivity, compulsivity, and addiction as you review the client case study in this week’s Learning Resources.

- Reflect on the psychopharmacologic treatments you might recommend for the assessment and treatment of patients requiring therapy for impulsivity, compulsivity, and addiction.
The Assignment: 5 pages
Examine Case Study: A Puerto Rican Woman With Comorbid Addiction. You will be asked to make three decisions concerning the medication to prescribe to this client. Be sure to consider factors that might impact the client’s pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic processes.
At each decision point, you should evaluate all options before selecting your decision and moving throughout the exercise. Before you make your decision, make sure that you have researched each option and that you evaluate the decision that you will select. Be sure to research each option using the primary literature.
Introduction to the case (1 page)
