Evidence- Based Practice /Academy of Nutrition & Dietetics
Evidence-based practice (EBP) enhances healthcare quality, improves patient outcomes through nursing care, reduces medical costs, and empowers the confidence of healthcare workers as clinicians (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2018).
The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics is the world’s largest organization of nutrition and dietetics practitioners founded in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1917, by a visionary group of women dedicated to helping the government conserve food and improve the public’s health and nutrition during World War I. Today, the Academy represents more than 112,000 credentialed practitioners that includes registered dietitian nutritionists, nutrition and dietetics technicians, registered, and other food and nutrition professionals holding undergraduate and advanced degrees in nutrition and dietetics, and students.
They are committed to improving the nation’s health and advancing the profession of nutrition and dietetics through research, education and advocacy using member leaders in the legislative and public policy committee. Advocacy is critical to achieving the mission, vision, goals and strategies outlined in the Academy’s Strategic Plan Roadmap because public policy significantly influences and forms the Academy’s public image and that of the dietetics profession. Through legislation and public policy issues, members address concerns with health inequities to achieve health equity and quality health care.
Overall, members of the Academy play a key role in shaping the public’s food choices to improve nutritional status, urge consumers and lawmakers to learn about the positive role nutrition plays in healthy lifestyles and disease prevention / management.

Nutrition and dietetics practitioners work in health care systems, home health care, foodservice, business, research and educational organizations, as well as in private practice. As vital members of medical teams in hospitals, long-term care facilities and health maintenance organizations, they provide medical nutrition therapy using specific nutrition services to treat chronic conditions, illnesses or injuries. Community-based nutrition and dietetics practitioners provide health promotion, disease prevention and wellness services. Nutrition services are an essential component of comprehensive high-quality health care throughout the lifecycle and must be patient-centered. In addition, through the expansion of services for nutrition -related chronic diseases, they support lowering health care costs.

The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics have demonstrated EBP through their mission and goals of improving the nation’s health using patient centered approach and researched evidence, promoting health equity, supporting lowering healthcare cost through advocates, and advancing the profession of nutrition and dietetics through education. With all these benefits of EBP in place, I would say that this healthcare organization is grounded in EBP. Use of EBP guides the nursing practice to safe outcomes
I have actually not come across this organization before now. I searched and found this organization with lots of interesting approach to healthcare that are evidence-based care, and I believe in this. Health for some individuals is very much dependent on nutrition and lifestyle, considering culture, evidence-based care, and other factors. It is very impressing to me that members of the Academy play a key role in shaping the public’s food choices to improve nutritional status, and urge consumers and lawmakers to learn about the positive role nutrition plays in healthy lifestyles and disease prevention / management. Prevention of disease / illness is than cure.

Diabetes is becoming too prevalent. Whereas I used to have 2 patients on my assignment that were diabetic, it is not uncommon for my entire assignment to be diabetic now. In my eight years at the hospital, I have noticed that we have implemented many new best practices for diabetes care including a carb controlled diet, exercise and insulin. We also check an a1c on patients when they are admitted as part of their normal blood work. There are many people who do not know they are diabetic and we catch it in this way. I am glad the attention is being given to this.
The National Institutes of Health states on their site that “diabetes affects 30 million American adults and children” (National, 2020). This is a staggering portion of the population. And it’s not just here, it’s worldwide. “According to World Health Organization statistics, >422 million adults globally were suffering from DM in 2014 and a continuous rise in DM prevalence is expected” (Lovic et al., 2020). Something must be done to protect the public’s health.

The mission of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics is to improve health and professional outcomes through research, education, and advocacy. In its mission statement, the organization remains committed to accelerating global health improvements through the integration of the best research evidence with expert judgment during the formulation of food and nutrition decisions for increasingly diverse patient populations. Amid the increasing chronic disease burden, the formulation of viable dietary and nutritional decisions is a product of continued commitment to clinical inquiry for the identification of best practices that are consistent with the values and preferences of patients and their families (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2018).
Evidence-based care by nutrition and dietetics practitioners is linked to improved food choices by patients and their families in the fight against chronic conditions attributed to poor dieting. The organization remains committed to fostering innovation and discovery through the professional development of member practitioners and the exploration of the best research evidence to identify effective strategies for alleviating global malnutrition (Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, n.d.). The organization emphasizes the improvement of global health through continued collaboration with key stakeholders and practitioner mentorship during the implementation of practice changes based on the best available research evidence. With evidence-based innovation and discovery, practitioners continually push the EBP agenda in their workplaces to develop a science-based profession and improve population wellbeing.

Title: NURS 6052 Where in the World Is Evidence-Based Practice?
Evidence-based practice is the standards which a registered dietitian nutritionist, dietetics technicians, and students must meet and follow. Evidence-based practice is the evidence from clinical trials, research, and expertise in the preferred practice (Blackmore et al., 2022). Evidence-based practice is a professional’s guide in making critical decisions about the care of the client and patient. Your evidence-based practice guide you to support health equity and quality of care to populations where quality healthcare is based on evidence that focuses on health effectiveness and safety (Morikane et al., 2021).
In general, I am really impressed by the mission and goals of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and how they demonstrate EBP through their mission and goals and other factors. The Academy is also grounded in EBP and strong evidence-based family medicine and I am sure that health of our community will be better.
The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics consists of nutrition and dietetics practitioners in the medical field. The Academy’s mission and goals have been achieved through educating their members. The members are health care professionals who exhibit EBP through their mission, goals, and strategies and support evidence-based practice. The organization has a very progressive outlook in the healthcare field by offering evidence-based care to patients, thus improving their lives.

The choice of organization and overall explanation were very insightful. One of the points I picked from the post is that the Evidence-Based Practice /Academy of Nutrition & Dietetics undertakes different activities governed by evidence-based practices. The impact of evidence-based practices on nurses is commendable given that nurses are involved in patient education on matters such as nutritional intake as recommended by Li et al. (2019). Although you have stated the different areas that are impacted by the organization, you do not highlight where it derives its practices such as research to inform the evidence-based nutritional initiatives introduced in the different settings.

I very much enjoyed reading your post. Diabetes is a significant problem worldwide, including in the USA, leading to several other health diseases. The CDC (n.d.) states that there are 37.3 million, 11.3% of the population, have diabetes, whether it be diagnosed or undiagnosed. These numbers highlight the importance of the Academy of Diabetes and Nutrition. The Academy is committed to transparency to ensure that members understand what the Academy’s operations and strategic direction are. Through its commitment to transparency, the Academy explains how scientific integrity is the backbone of not only the Academy but is for any organization that supports and funds research (Lennon, S. et al., 2022).
In 2015 the Academy supported the vision toward six scientific integrity principles (SIP) and created subgroups under the Council on Research to bring awareness about the conduct of research and adherence to SIP. In order to guide professionals in this field, the academy has released four key principles to follow to help maintain scientific integrity. These principles are as follows, ethical conduct of research and protection of human subjects, funder’s influence on research question/methodology/education content and conflicts of interest, review of research-related materials, maintaining and promoting a culture of scientific integrity (Lennon, S. et al., 2022).
In addition to SIP, the Academy has a five-year plan to address diversity and inclusion. Seeing how much weight the Academy puts into science into their identity helps further to support evidence-based practice in the healthcare field. With the known lack of public knowledge around nutrition and diabetes, it’s great to see an organization so committed to getting science-based information out to professionals and different diverse groups in the community.

Christiana Care Health System
Christiana Care Health System is in Delaware and comprise of three hospitals. Headquartered in Wilmington, the trauma center in Newark, and the community hospital in Cecil County, Maryland. It is a level 1 trauma center with 1,340 beds, a level 3 neo-natal intensive care unit and a free-standing emergency department, (Christiana Care Health System [CCHS], 2022).
Evidence-Based Practice
Evidence based practice is evident through the organization’s website. Within their professional practice model, it illustrates a tree with roots, a trunk, branches, and leaves. One of the leaves represents evidence-based practice. Christiana Care also established a professional governance structure with emphasizes on research and evidence-based practice, and it is overseen by a council comprised of registered nurses and nurse practitioners. According to CCHS (2022), “relationship-based care and interdisciplinary collaboration best benefit the patients and families we serve by encouraging the formulation of evidence-based clinical care standards leading to quality outcomes.”
Also, within the Christiana Care newsletters, CCHS (2022) states their focus on evidence-based practice is demonstrated throughout the correspondence and stresses the importance of following evidence-based best practices recommended by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) and the support of the Delaware Division of Public Health.
Christiana Care’s work in clearly grounded in evidence-based practice, and their nurses are at the forefront of the research and practice initiatives. Their passion for research and what is learned from the results and drives their continuity of care. According to Crabtree et al. (2016) “staff nurses are a critical link in bringing evidence ‐ based changes into clinical practice, it occurs when they ask questions about treatments and care, have the resources and skills necessary to search for and appraise research evidence, implement the evidence in practice, and evaluate its effectiveness.”
Knowledge Gained
The knowledge gained from the information I received from the CCHS (2022) website is not what I expected. It changed my perception for the better and I have a deeper appreciation for the organization, and a greater respect with their openness on evidence-based practice.
Before the Covid 19 pandemic, their website did not go into detail, nor did it feel user friendly, welcoming, or informative; it was very bland. Now, the website is very welcoming, vibrant, and family centered. While going through the website, it is evident that CCHS valued the feedback of their patients and families, and they truly care about their community, and employees.
