Title: NURS 6003 Strategies for Academic Portfolios

Professional development goals are short- and long-term benchmarks that encourage career growth, increase productivity, and support your personal and professional interests (Gibson, 2023).

Incorporating academic activities and accomplishments into one’s professional development goals is essential for individuals seeking to advance their careers and expertise in their respective fields. This integration not only enhances the depth of one’s knowledge but also serves as a tangible demonstration of commitment to continuous learning and growth. Two strategies for effectively including academic activities and accomplishments into professional development goals are pursuing advanced degrees and certifications and actively engaging in research and publication activities.

Pursuing advanced degrees and certifications represents a foundational strategy for professionals aiming to integrate academic achievements into their career progression. Improving yourself, staying current, and moving up in your profession or switching sectors is what comes from investing in your education (EHI insights, 2023). Earning an advanced degree, such as a Master’s or a Ph.D., not only deepens one’s subject matter expertise but also enhances critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Furthermore, acquiring specialized certifications recognized within a specific industry or profession can demonstrate a commitment to staying current in a rapidly evolving field. By setting clear goals to complete such academic pursuits, individuals can articulate their commitment to lifelong learning, positioning themselves as dedicated and valuable assets within their professional environments.

Another strategy for incorporating academic activities and accomplishments into professional development goals is actively engaging in research and publication activities.  Engaging with research is critical to ongoing development as a curious and compelling professional (Vega, 2015). Research involvement, whether as an individual or part of a research team, fosters a deeper understanding of a particular subject matter and allows professionals to contribute to the body of knowledge within their field. Subsequently, publishing research findings in academic journals or presenting at conferences showcases one’s commitment to academic rigor and dissemination of knowledge. These accomplishments not only validate one’s expertise but also establish a professional reputation, potentially leading to collaborations and career advancement opportunities.

Walden University’s initiative on social change focuses on bettering human and social circumstances through the creation and application of knowledge (Walden, 2021). This resonates with my career aspiration to join the medical community in advancing mental health awareness, intervention, and upkeep. I have a vision to establish a non-profit entity in my country of origin. This entity will be dedicated to spreading mental health awareness and offering treatment to those affected by mental disorders. Due to high treatment costs, most young people in Africa are left with no choice but to live with untreated mental illnesses or to visit traditional or religious leaders for treatment (Dalal, 2023). The knowledge gained through my education will empower me to foster mental health awareness, diminish the stigma surrounding mental illness, and aid individuals in seeking the necessary help for their mental conditions, thereby uplifting human and social circumstances.

A Sample Answer 2 For the Assignment: NURS 6003 Strategies for Academic Portfolios

We have all heard of the famous saying, “Knowledge is power,” and to be an effective change agent, you must be knowledgeable. It is against this background that I intend to engage in continuous learning opportunities throughout my nursing career to be a better resource for patients. Consequently, I will strive to be knowledgeable about evidence-based research studies and be updated about changes in the field to create an impact. One strategy that will be beneficial in incorporating academic activities and accomplishments into my professional development plan will be to join a professional organization related to my field of study. I intend to join the American Psychiatric Nurses Association (APNA) as I will specialize in mental health and the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP).

Not only do members of APNA gain access to a wealth of resources, but they can connect with nurses who understand what they do because they do it, too. You can find the tools needed to keep practice current, including continuing education and evidence-based resources (American Psychiatric Nurses Association, n.d.). Attending regular meetings, conferences, and seminars and exploring volunteer opportunities may also help broaden my professional network. Membership with APNA gives you automatic membership to the local state chapter.

Obtaining additional certification in a career pathway and ensuring the renewal of my PMHNP-BC licensure every five years, as required by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), is one of the approaches I will implement in accomplishing my professional goals. Furthermore, working in a professional medical environment will also provide daily insight into life as a practitioner, getting an opportunity to work directly with patients to gain meaningful experiences for better health outcomes. Nursing Professional Development (NPD), incorporated into the professional development plan, is necessary for practitioners as it is designed to validate achievements of different standards of practice and performance among NPD specialists as a guide for working within the scope and criteria of NPD (Harper, 2021).

Positive social change, as defined by Walden University, is a deliberate process of creating and applying ideas, strategies, and actions to promote the worth, dignity, and development of individuals, communities, organizations, institutions, cultures, and societies, resulting in the improvement of human and social conditions (Walden University, n.d.). Serving people and communities in need and continually engaging in continuing education aligns with Walden’s commitment to social change, which aligns with my goals and objectives. Walden’s vision not only focuses on the individual student but also the impact on the greater good of society, resulting in the improvement of human and social conditions. This vision aligns with my personal and professional goals of serving people and communities in need of mental health resources and advocating and promoting the mental well-being of every individual. A professional development plan and portfolio must include areas for serving the community and improving the profession (Walden University, n.d.). Nursing is service-oriented, and continuing to impact people of all socio-economic backgrounds in their respective communities mirrors this goal.

A portfolio is an organized record of one’s academic experiences, achievements, and professional development which illustrates the variety and quality of work one does (UTS, 2018). Burns (2018) notes that “the nursing portfolio is more than a collection of documents that allows nurses to stretch and reach beyond their day-to-day expectations and explore ways to advance both themselves and the profession” (p.2).  By building a brief portfolio including one’s academic activities and accomplishments, the nurse can create a powerful document that helps one to accept accountability for their growth and development leading to career advancement and competency improvement (Burns, 2018).

Joining a professional nursing organization is one strategy the writer can use to include academic activities and accomplishments in my professional development goals of career advancement and creating a positive impact on patients and communities. One must connect to professional organizations that align with one’s career goals (Hannans &  Olivo, 2017). Connecting with professional nursing organizations can help one meet and network with different experience nursing individuals, gain new knowledge and skills and utilize them as references while applying for jobs can be beneficial. Therefore, while starting a job search, following organizations that interest you and interacting with them either online or in person by commenting appropriately on their activities and initiatives can help lead to professional growth (Hannans &  Olivo, 2017).

Another strategy the writer can use to include academic activities and accomplishments into my professional development goals is by providing documentary evidence of skills, knowledge, and experience of education and research that changed patients’ life positively from a range of sources  (Casey & Egan, 2010). An easy way the writer can include this is by utilizing the ePortfolio. Hannans &  Olivo (2017) notes that “one way to create a positive online presence is by crafting an ePortfolio, which is an online presentation of one’s academic and professional experiences and achievements.”   Casey & Egan (2010) notes that “a well-constructed portfolio shows how learning has occurred as well as its application in practice” (p.4). Knowledge and skills developed over time must be evident in the portfolio (Casey & Egan, 2010). Highlighting up-to-date educational activities and accomplishments can lead to professional goal development.  For instance, The University of Utah (2023) notes that “updating your portfolio will help start making connections among various courses and concepts as well as making sure that any outside parties have a current snapshot of your progress. Therefore Casey & Egan (2010) notes that “portfolios have the potential to be a tool that is an accessible resource that can assist in supporting career changes, meet professional body requirements, attest to academic ability and ultimately help to individual practitioners to implement and promote best practice” (p. 4-5).

Walden University (2022) notes that “social change is a deliberate process of creating and applying ideas, strategies, and actions to promote the worth, dignity, and development of individuals, communities, organizations, institutions, cultures, and societies that result in the improvement of human and social conditions.” Serving the community will help the writer align my professional development goals of achieving excellence and career advancement with the University’s emphasis on social change. For example, gaining new knowledge and skills, participating in research, and joining professional organizations can help writers gain new knowledge and skills needed to be a scholar-practitioner to provide holistic, evidence-based care to patients and communities, improving patient overall outcomes. The in-depth knowledge and skills from the NP program can help the writer create positive social change in the communities by minimizing healthcare disparity gaps. Therefore,  aligning my own professional development goals with the Walden university’s emphasis on social change will help the writer to become a civic and professional role model leading to advancing the betterment of society (Walden university, 2022).

In the beginning of this class, we talked about our academic and professional values and goals. Being part of a community and giving back to our community is one of my professional and academic goal.  Being part of the community means contributing. One of the methods I will employ two strategies for including academic activities and accomplishments into my professional development goals. The first strategy will be the Continuing Education Strategy. As part of professional-scholar community pursue continuing education opportunities and opportunities to learn from different members of the community One way to be a catalyst for change in our community is to arm myself with knowledge and best practices. To seek that wisdom and knowledge, I must engage in continuing education. The conference and workshop have had a significant impact on mental health. The knowledge I gather will help me stay current with the latest research, treatment methods, and developments in the field. Learning from it and bringing it back to my community will demonstrate my commitment to my professional development and social change.

The second technique that I will employ is seeking out opportunities for leadership and involvement in the community, which is a key strategy for incorporating academic activities and accomplishments into professional development goals and aligning them with Walden University’s emphasis on social change. This approach gives psychiatric mental health nurse practitioners a lot of benefits, such as the chance to develop their leadership skills, do meaningful work that helps bring about social change, and show how committed they are to promoting health equity and addressing the social determinants of health.

One way to seek out opportunities for leadership and involvement is to volunteer for committees or task forces focused on improving access to healthcare in underserved communities; an example is the Meeting of the Minds. It is an annual gathering of different disciplines in mental health profession. As a PMHNP, I could volunteer to serve on an outreach committee aimed at educating the public about mental health. By participating in this type of initiative, as a PMHNP, I can demonstrate my commitment to promoting health equity and addressing the social determinants of health, which aligns with Walden University’s focus on social change.

Week Five Discussion Post

As I enter the family nurse practitioner program at Walden, my main goal aligns with the University’s goal to “promote the worth, dignity, and development of individuals, communities, organizations, institutions, cultures, and societies” (Walden University, n.d.). By learning and applying new evidence-based practice and knowledge throughout this program, I hope to serve my community better. I strive to offer the best nursing care to the communities most in need while utilizing my knowledge to combat difficulties between rural communities and quality healthcare. Without academic activities and accomplishments, it would be quite difficult to achieve my professional development goals, so it is of utmost importance that I have strategies that will provide the best educational outcomes in my growth and development as a nurse practitioner.

My first strategy is to utilize the opportunities offered to me through various programs and associations geared towards the enhancement of learning and advancement of nurses nationwide. The American Association of Nurse Practitioners offers continuing education opportunities, funding for furthering education, business resources, and leadership opportunities within the AANP (Professional Development, n.d.).

My second strategy is creating a space that allows fellow nursing professionals to collaborate with one another. My career as a nurse practitioner would be impossible if I had not met so many professionals who offered assistance, guidance, and feedback that is vital to my growth and development as a nurse and now in my studies in this program. The AANP offers networking opportunities to assist in collaboration with fellow nurse practitioners to build positive relationships in the advancement of professional development (Professional Development, n.d.).
