Assignment Guidelines

Consider a transition you are personally engaged in now. Write a brief paper addressing the following items:

  • Identify the characteristics of the transition that you have observed, as defined in transitions theory.
  • Analyze the changes that you are experiencing because of the transition.
  • Analyze personal, community, and societal conditions that may have influenced the transition that you are experiencing (list influences such as cultural beliefs and attitudes, socioeconomic status, and level of preparation that have affected your approach to the transition).
  • Review your responses to the transition and consider the outcome of the personal transition in the first question. What would facilitate successful outcomes to the transition? What might inhibit successful outcomes?

Your paper should be two to three pages long (not including the title page or reference page) and use correct APA (7th edition) formatting. Cite at least one source, and you are welcome to utilize sources outside of this week’s readings.

This assignment will be graded using the Assignment 4.1: Transitions Theory Rubric found in your syllabus.

Week 4: Clinical Practice and Middle Range Theories

For the next two weeks, we will examine selected middle range nursing theories. These theories have evolved from our previously examined paradigms as well as from our rapidly changing nursing environment. The narrowed focus of middle range theories provides the advanced practice nurse with opportunities for strategic clinical application.

Review a list of all items due this week in your course syllabus.


Lesson 1: Clinical Practice and Middle Range Theories

The influence on clinical decision making from two middle range nursing theories will be discussed. These theories are Meleis’ Transitions Theory and story theory.

The conceptual focus of two middle range nursing theories that center around relief, comfort, and satisfaction will also be discussed. These theories are Kolcaba’s Comfort Theory and Duffy’s Quality-Caring Model.

  • Explain how the four main concepts of transitions theory may be evidenced in nursing care.
  • Discuss the role of story theory in facilitating change in nursing care.
  • Explain how the three intuitive components of comfort theory have a role in best practices decision making.
  • Discuss responsibilities of the professional nurse in implementing the quality-care model.
