My current (new) boss has been a mentor to me. I just received a promotion, and my director is a Navy veteran who also made his way through school while starting a family. He has been working tirelessly this past year as his co-director quit and he has taken on an entire region by himself. He also just welcomed a new baby. I had been chosen to take a leadership course with the organization and Kirby lead most of it. We met once a month for 8-months and then had to do a presentation at the end. Kirby was totally open, honest, and authentic during that time. It made it easier to relate to him and for him to understand our views and discussion. He is very steadfast in his ways while remaining a thorough leader. As Koter stated (as cited in Roussel et al., 2019) leaders set direction, they align people, and they provide motivation and inspiration. That is what Kirby does!

The main characteristics were his authenticity and that he is a very down-to-earth guy. He understands what his role is and sets boundaries while maintaining an open dialogue. This relationship is very important because it allows those that he works with to be open and honest with him. When he leads those below him with integrity and authenticity, then we can run our clinics and staff in a similar fashion. I believe having him as a director was one of the main deciding factors for me to take this promotion, especially with the timing being at the end of my master’s program. It was a difficult decision but having him to support me made the decision that much easier. Now, to get through the last bit of school while training in my new role!!

Excellent leadership is a strong foundation for optimizing an organization’s productivity. It brings diverse teams together to work for a shared purpose, ensures that employees’ needs are addressed comprehensively, and keeps teams highly motivated. Mentorship is among the critical aspects of leadership. It involves matching an experienced senior staff with more junior and less experienced staff to increase competence (Davey et al., 2020). Mentorship is founded on the principle that employees can grow and develop their skills by learning from others.

I have come across many mentors in school and at work. Currently, my preceptor is playing the mentorship role. The most visible leadership style that my mentor implements to promote a healthy working relationship is transformational leadership. Seljemo et al. (2020) described transformational leadership as leaders and followers assisting each other to develop to higher levels through morale and inspiration. As the facility’s Chief Nursing Officer, my mentor helps followers grow by pushing them to achieve better results, motivation, and shared decision-making. Several characteristics drew me to the mentor: active engagement, presence, ready support, active listening, and the desire to value diverse perspectives.

An effective mentor relationship is crucial for both the leader and the mentee. A healthy mentorship relationship provides an excellent opportunity to develop the mentee’s competence, self-confidence, and professional identity (Davey et al., 2020). Leaders also get a chance to improve their communication, organization, management, and listening skills. Hoover et al. (2020) demonstrated mentorship as a strategy for educating, supporting, and retaining nurses. The support and skills gained through mentorship help nurses cope with job-related stress that damages care quality. Mentorship nurtures workers; it gives them a sense of belonging and purpose and increases job satisfaction (Davey et al., 2020). The current practice requires leaders committed to solving workplace problems. Leaders use mentorship to address workplace issues such as turnover and dissatisfaction.
