Servant and transformational leadership have characteristics that provide direction and inspiration. Servant leadership is concerned with assisting and developing individuals inside an organization, whereas transformational leadership is concerned with motivating followers to work together toward a common purpose. A servant leader is concerned with his or her followers, whereas a transformational leader is concerned with the organization and its common goals, with organizational growth and development as a top priority.

Transformational leaders transform the personal values of followers to support the vision and goals of the organization by fostering an environment where relationships can be formed and by establishing a climate of trust in which visions can be shared. Essentially where servant leadership focuses on the individuals first, transformational leadership focuses on the organization first. Both forms of leadership can be effective, but one may be better to use in a situation over the other. Each form of leadership has unique characteristics that make it beneficial to use in any given situation. I personally think that in many situations for continued success, servant leadership would be more beneficial. In my past as a leader, I felt being a servant leader was more beneficial as a servant leader I was able to build up, inspire and focus on individuals rather than an organization. If we focus on individuals, then we are building them to be successful and to be able to handle continuing changes and new initiatives within the organization. Focusing on the individuals gives them the tools to adapt to change and continue to be successful.

A Servant leader can utilize the transformational model in managing an organization or change process management.  Many great nurses are promoted to leadership because they are great nurses, yet less attention is paid to teaching or assessing their leadership skills (Cook, 2021).  As we have discussed in past questions, servant leadership is a trait many nurses own as a nurse as they work with their patients, yet at times the leadership skill to lead others needs to be fostered and trained to be successful.   Servant leadership is pivotal on having good relationships, growing others, and having a “We not Me” attitude (Connors, 2020).  The tenants of transformational leadership in theory are the ability to stimulate thinking and be inspirational in motivating others (Cook, 2021).   A servant leader who utilizes the transformational style or model, strengthens the bonds, and inspires others through promoting teamwork, recognizing other accomplishments, and growing the qualities the ones, they lead.

Change management is a difficult task that many and most leaders must be prepared to manage each day (Connors, 2020).  Change while a necessity for an organization to move forward it is not easy for some nurses and many desire to not change, the leader who understands the ones they lead, the culture and how to best design the change is a servant leader.  To motivate others the change the leader must understand their concerns, and respect opinions, nurses who are on the frontline working the practice day to day hold a lot of value in the change management process.

Change management is about understanding the change and being able to explain the change in a useful clear context.  Inspiration and motivation come from cultivating a work environment where leaders and nurses are encouraged to share ideas and be involved.  The servant leader who utilizes the transformational model is in my opinion the best to promote and manage change at this style of leadership empowers others as well as involve them with the change thus creating ownership and sustainability.

Poor leadership lacks accountability and utilizes power to force others will, this may make a change, but it will not be sustained, Leaders who partner with front line nurses to have combined decision-making capability will not only change their work environment they will also create a sustained change process (Cook, 2021)
