Sustainability requires evaluating systems — including building infrastructure and organizational practices—and implementing measures in line with proper budget planning. A healthcare facility needs to have reliable and resilient engineering systems to ensure safety for its patients. A strategic approach to health care sustainability can incorporate factors such as limited funding, the rigorous facility accreditation processes, and a low risk tolerance.

Hospitals are constantly in a state of upgrade, modification, change, or expansion. Because of the constantly evolving state of health care, facilities often change the use of space and add equipment without truly considering the cumulative effects of small changes on building infrastructure and operations. Frequently, projects are completed by one group of facility staff, but maintained by another division. Without productive communication, installed equipment and even patient safety and satisfaction improvements may be counterproductive to the building’s central plant — or worse, completely unknown to the operations and maintenance staff. In healthcare organizations, facility staff is in the prime position to identify, develop, and implement projects and practices that advance sustainability. But this requires leadership and investment.

My project is looking at vascular needs in the ER to ensure patients are greeting the appropriate line, staff know what line, there are coming in with and those patients being admitted. Also educating patients as to what to expect from the nursing staff regarding the care and maintenance of their vascular access. This type of education is ongoing. The ER staff are relatively young in tenure. Sustainability will be relative to stability of staff with low turnover. Especial in the ER where turnover of patients is at 100%. Patients when they present to the ER, they may not be in the best frame of mind to understand. Education about vascular access start at the insertion and is ongoing while the patient continues to have vascular access.

Programs, efforts, and actions targeted toward preserving a specific resource are generally considered sustainable in this definition. The duty of health services to patients today and in the future might be extended by considering sustainability as a domain of excellence in healthcare. The longer-term approach emphasizes how our healthcare system’s effects impact people’s health on the environment and communities. As a result, a sustainable strategy would broaden the notion of value in healthcare to include a comparison of financial costs and social, environmental, and health consequences. Transparency, parent involvement, and scalable delivery strategies are characteristics that encourage sustainable outcomes (Mortimer et al., 2018).

Patients frequently lack access to crucial information that would help them make wise decisions. Patients may make better decisions and have more influence over their health and care outcomes if the healthcare system promotes openness for them. Healthcare professionals and care teams should emphasize listening more to improve patient involvement. Patients who believe they are being heard and understood are more likely to interact with doctors. The country must have enough skilled personnel to serve the populace and strengthen the healthcare system. New care delivery models, such as increased home health care and care delivery teams with various abilities suited to their roles, can help improve this.

Sustainability necessitates evaluating systems, including building infrastructure, organizational practices and implementing measures by proper budget planning. To ensure the safety of its patients, a healthcare facility must have dependable and resilient engineering systems (Shelton et al., 2018). Healthcare facilities must find solutions that have been proven to work in the unique healthcare environment. A planned approach to health care sustainability can consider factors such as minimal resources, strict facility accreditation processes, and a low-risk tolerance.

Many changes need to be made to the short-stay unit. My main concern is improving the unit’s overall patient experience. My preceptor and I have agreed to find a sustainable method because the current method is not showing positive outcomes. She plans on discussing our findings to her unit. I aim to use the current method as a foundation for what to do and what not to do. My preceptor and I will continue working together to make my initiatives more effective once it is available.
