Practicum Activities Reflection:

The past two weeks have been overwhelming and provided an excellent opportunity to understand the setting, workplace dynamics, leadership, and patient care problems, among other issues. The main activity with the preceptor was to establish a working formula for a healthy practicum engagement. Regarding the observations, nursing shortage continues to be a dominant problem in the practicum setting and has far-reaching consequences on health outcomes. It was still an issue in the past week, and I observed several cases of medical errors that can be attributed to the nursing shortage. This is because the high nurse-to-patient issue due to the nursing shortage makes nurses overwhelmed, hence committing errors. Concerning leadership, I observed that nurses are perceived as natural leaders since they are actively involved in addressing patient problems and are better informed about patients’ care continuum. Their ability to solve problems makes them natural leaders; thus, the facility gives nurses opportunities to lead by delegating duties

Application of Leadership:

My preceptor integrates various components of effective leadership in routine care and everyday engagement with other professionals. One of such elements is professional responsibility and power. Nurses and nurse leaders are power figures due to their scientific and clinical understanding of human physiology and ability to transform patients’ lives. They transform patients’ lives by addressing their health problems and helping them live healthier, productive lives. My preceptor believes that professional responsibility and power are innate and are expressed by assisting others to thrive. As a result, nurses are given opportunities to express themselves, be innovative, and solve issues in the most professional and standard ways possible.

Other key factors of multiple leadership styles include authenticity, integrity, and emotional intelligence. Authenticity in leadership has much to do with being genuine and real. So far, my preceptor has acted genuinely, and everything is expected to remain unchanged as time advances. Integrity in leadership involves honesty, trustworthiness, and reliability (Sastrawan et al., 2019). The preceptor owns up individual mistakes and promotes fairness and justice. Emotional intelligence is expressed through self-regulation, understanding people and situations in-depth, and resolving conflicts effectively. My preceptor adapts to situations effectively, a trait that I need to emulate to cope with workplace dynamics effectively.

Practicum Project Preparation:

As already stated, the nursing shortage is a real problem in the practicum site. It leads to a high nurse-to-patient ratio, implying that the nurse workload is high. When overwhelmed, nurses are physically and mentally unstable hence the few cases of medical errors as I have observed so far. A high nurse-to-patient ratio also leads to burnout, which is a leading cause of nurse turnover in many health care facilities (Chen et al., 2019). I have several ideas for my practicum project. The first idea is to formulate strategies to enable nurses to work effectively despite the nursing shortage. The second idea is to collaborate with the preceptor to address the nursing shortage at the practicum site. The third idea is to develop interventions to motivate nurses to prevent possible turnover. Among these options, the first idea is the most appropriate for my project.

The project refines and builds skills related to my career goals in multiple ways. Firstly, nurses are natural problem solvers that should be actively involved in addressing health and workplace problems. As a result, the project will enable me to apply theory to practice to address a critical problem facing the site. Secondly, nurses should build their knowledge over time by engaging in evidence-based practice (EBP) projects. The primary components of EBP include scientific evidence, clinical expertise, and patient values and preferences (Li et al., 2019). The project will enable me to apply EBP since I will search for the currently published evidence to enable nurses to work effectively despite the nursing shortage.

Leadership Video Reflection:

In “Servant Leadership- Issue of Power,” the meaning of leadership and its application are elaborated. One of the things I learned from the video is that servant leadership is a critical component of successful management since 85% of managerial failures stem from ineptness in dealing with people (Grand Canyon University, 2020). As a result, effective leaders committed to serving their organizations towards success must learn how to deal with people. In health care settings, leaders must deal with their staff for organizations to grow and develop. The other thing I learned from the video is that leadership means to influence and has nothing to do with positions or controlling others. Therefore, good leadership implies influencing someone else to do something good and healthy (Grand Canyon University, 2020). On the contrary, bad leadership is not failing to influence. Instead, it means influencing other people to do evil. As organization’s servants, nurse leaders should influence the nursing staff to do what benefits patients and the organization.
