Practicum Activities Reflection:

Weeks 3-4 were busier than the first two weeks since the activities to carry out weekly had already been explicitly defined and roles assigned. The effects of the nursing problem necessitating practice change continued to be more vivid in weeks 3-4. Besides causing medical errors, the nursing shortage in the practicum site also causes exhaustion and loss of morale among nurses. The preceptor was present for expert advice, consultation, and guidance in weeks 3-4, and close cooperation is expected in the coming weeks as solution generation dominates other activities. An organization-wide approach seems the most rational to address the nursing shortage, but more specific interventions will be designed and implemented later.

Application of Leadership:

People and organizational processes are not static. They evolve, and circumstances usually force them to adopt new lifestyles, communication strategies, and relationships. As a result, change is part of personal life, and it is crucial to have an elaborate change management plan. One way of handling change management in my professional life is embracing change. Being open to change helps me adapt to situations comfortably and avoid discomfort and dissatisfaction typical in health care professionals comfortable with the status quo (Cho et al., 2021). The health practice encounters many changes related to patient care, workplace communication, access to care, and others. Evolution in these areas requires health care professionals to be ready for change and embrace it as part of the evolving practice.

Change management shares many principles with strategic management. Embracing change implies being ready for personal and organizational transformation as goals, processes, and core values change over time. As Nilsen et al. (2020) stated, the primary role of change management is to implement strategies for adopting and controlling change and helping people to adapt effectively. The concept resembles strategic management is to change how things are done, looking forward to better processes and outcomes. The purpose is to improve results, which is achieved by accommodating change and evolving as times necessitate.

A typical change requiring a strategic approach is technology adoption in health care delivery. In the current practice, technology use has intensified due to the increased need for remote care and quick services to patients. Mental health providers are also observing patients and providing counseling through telehealth to cope with COVID-19 challenges (Abraham et al., 2021). Amid these evolutionary practices, health care professionals should embrace change and develop mechanisms to cope with its destabilizing effects. Effective plans include training to improve skills, interprofessional collaboration and seeking mentorship from experienced colleagues.

Practicum Project Preparation:

Health care organizations have different missions, visions, and core values. Nurses should ensure that evidence-based practice (EBP) projects align with the mission and vision of their organizations. The organization’s everyday activities are founded on the principle that all patients deserve quality, timely, and adequate care. Values such as patient-centeredness, teamwork, and professionalism are highly valued. The project aligns with the mission since it will help to address a problem that hampers patient care. As Søvold et al. (2021) noted, nurses should be mentally and physically healthy to provide optimal care. Addressing the nursing shortage will optimize their health and increase their readiness and motivation to attend to all patients. The project should align with the organization’s goals to ensure that it gets support from stakeholders.

Leadership Video Reflection:

It is common to see people misdescribing authority since many perceive it as commanding other people, particularly juniors, to follow some rules. Indeed, authority is a word with many negative connotations, but the video helps to clear this misconception. One of the things I learned from the “Servant Leadership- Issue of Authority” video is that authority denotes the legitimate use of power. In this case, possessing power does not necessarily mean being authoritative, but a leader must first possess the power to exercise authority. Therefore, like power, authority is the influence that seeks to benefit other people (Grand Canyon University, 2022). It can be acquired and lost, but it is usually preserved for trusted people.

The other thing explicit in the video is that authority can be formal or informal. In a formal setup, people acquire authority by being in a position of power. The position makes them leaders who make decisions for other people to follow (Grand Canyon University, 2022). In this case, they have the right to authorize others to follow their decisions by virtue of their leadership positions. The position such leaders occupy is acknowledged, and it is what gives them the right to authorize others to follow their decisions. On the other hand, informal authority represents a situation where people give a person the right to make decisions in their life (Grand Canyon University, 2022). Such authority gives a person the mandate to serve others, albeit not occupying any position. It is primarily about serving and not making decisions for the organization.
