One of the drugs used in the treatment of varicose vein is Polidocanol; though, there are other techniques used as well including the surgical option (McCance & Huether, 2014). The Polidocanol drug induces the sclerosant effect by influencing the concentration-dependent cell differential cell injury. The process activates the cellular calcium signaling and the nitric oxide pathway which then administers the sclerosant and causing cell death. The timing of the endothelial cell death depends on the sclerosant concentration (Star, Connor, & Parsi, 2018). The drug has been proven to be effective in the treatment of varicose vein; though, there are associated side effects such as chest tightness and impaired vision. Additionally, patients are likely to experience mild numbness, dizziness and increase the growth of hair on the treated legs.

The recommended amount of the drug varies depending on the size of the varicose vein. Usually, 0.3ML of 1% solution is used per injection. The drug may interact with other medications in the body. Furthermore, it can pass through the milk and thus non-recommended for breastfeeding mothers. The sclerosant effect causes the veins to scar and thus force the blood to reroute through the healthier veins (Gao, Zhang, Li, & Shi, 2016).
