Our hospital is undergoing the implementation of a new EMR and with it a new medication management system. Implementation of the Medication Management System in association with the EMR is intended to increase medication security, reduce medication errors, increase accountability, and simplify medication tracking. There are multiple stakeholders for this project within the system, but the stakeholder I wish to identify is the nursing staff. Nurses have a great deal to lose when medications – especially controlled substances – are ordered for their patients, whether protocol or individual orders (Tariq, et al., 2023). Simple mistakes can cause patient harm, up to and including death. Nurses have lost their livelihood and freedom due to bad processes performed repetitively in conjunction with ineffective safeguards.

The system update will improve the way our nurses are able to acquire medications with safeguards in place to reduce the risk of wrong-medication, wrong-time, wrong-patient, wrong-dosage errors. The system will help to increase processing speed of orders and availability of medications during hours when pharmacy is not available, reducing stress over missed or wrong-timed dosing. 24 hour on-call pharmacy availability and remote order verification also means that medications will be double-checked against the patient profile by a pharmacist prior to availability to the nurse. This removes the responsibility of cross-checking allergies and reactions from the nurse’s responsibility when pharmacy is not open.

Nurses have a stake in making the new medication management system a success.

This discussion examines stakeholder agency reporting sources and their contribution towards continuous quality improvement (CQI).

The stakeholder agency reporting sources have a significant contribution towards CQI. Some of these sources include the Joint Commission (TJC) and the National Quality Forum (NQF). TJC is an independent, not-for-profit organization for accrediting healthcare programs and organizations in the United States (Wadhwa & Boehning, 2023). It seeks to promote quality healthcare and enhance patient advocacy. The National Quality Forum (NQF) is a private organization that creates standard quality measurement tools to aid in enhanced assessment and promote the delivery of quality healthcare services (Leape, 2021).

The external reporting groups such as the Joint Commission (TJC) and the National Quality Forum (NQF) have significant impacts on CQI.
