For instance, in healthcare, the Pareto chart can be used to identify the most common complaints or defects that need attention. A critical area in healthcare that requires adherence to a strict therapeutic regimen is in the renal patient population. Dialysis compliance refers to the extent to which patients adhere to the prescribed treatment regimen for managing chronic kidney disease. According to the quality principle, 80 percent of losses come from 20% of the causes.

The Pareto chart is a bar chart that arranges the bars from largest to smallest, from left to right, as described by Minitab Blog Editor (2016). The categories or factors symbolized by the bigger bars on the left are more important than those on the right. By ordering the bars from largest to smallest, a Pareto chart helps visualize which factors comprise the 20% most critical—the “vital few”—and the “trivial many.” A Pareto chart can be used earlier or later in the quality improvement process to build consensus or even outside of the quality improvement process. A cumulative percentage line helps judge the added contribution of each category. If a Pareto effect exists, the cumulative line rises steeply for the first few defect types and then levels off.
