I suppose some referring to evidence-based practice (EBP) as a “cookbook” approach might be considered an accurate description to some.  When utilizing the EBP approach to solving nursing problems, nurses can apply research proven to improve patient outcomes directly to the problems in their practice they are attempting to solve (American Nurses Association, n.d.).  Nurses can rely on decades of research performed through hundreds to thousands of studies on interventions applied to the specific problem they are experiencing, and find evidence that supports the interventions in solving their problem.  This is such a valuable process to nurses who wish to improve outcomes for their patients, but maybe don’t have the time or even the patient volume to conduct their own studies, and why should the need to?

Most EBP studies can easily be replicated for similar patient populations and nurses can begin to improve outcomes at a more rapid pace.  I’ll use the example of my own EBP project from a previous class because it’s a relevant problem in my current practice.  I work with the Long-Term Acute Care (LTAC) patient population, and these patients are at a very high risk for pressure injury development during their typically long hospitalizations.  We are constantly looking for new, innovative ways to help reduce pressure injury development for our patients so their already longer length of stay is not extended further because of the lengthy treatment these wounds can sometimes require.

The issue we have with conducing our own studies is our small bed size.  We are one of the smallest in the country, so it really helps us to be able to rely on EBP studies conducted at larger facilities like our own so that we can improve patient outcomes now.  So is this a cookbook approach for us?  Absolutely, but why wouldn’t you want to rely on a recipe that’s been tested and has proven to be successful versus starting from scratch?  Not being able to rely on these “recipes” so widely available to us would mean years and years of research on our own small number of patients, which might keep any benefits from ever reaching the patients we wish to help.

Evidence-based practice in nursing involves providing holistic, quality care based on the most up-to-date research and knowledge rather than traditional methods, advice from colleagues, or personal beliefs. Nurses can expand their knowledge and improve their clinical practice experience by collecting, processing, and implementing research findings (American Nurses Association, n.d.).

EBP is a personalized approached because it focused on a certain group of individuals who have undergone similar medical care and provides a base for data collection, analysis, and implementing research findings to improve patient care and aid in wellness. A nurse can identify what findings to include by clearly and concisely identifying a problem, assessing the current practices are, evaluating what new practices have been found to aid in a certain situation for example, I work in the operating room, I specialize in trauma surgeries, I might want to evaluate and implement a new OR count policy because there have been too many incidences of RFB (retained foreign bodies) left after major trauma surgery.

A nurse will assess the current state of the units practice and maybe design a new way to implementing additional counts or documentation to ensure that nothing is left behind. It is important for a nurse to observe and make observations in order to identify inefficiencies. This information will serve as critical data and serve for the basis for change. EBP is not a cookbook approach however it is a new way to conduct research and improve patient care. This is important because it will serve as a future basis for policy change and quality patient driven care.

Until now, I have never heard of evidence-based practice (EBP) being considered a “cookbook” approach when integrating studies into practice.  EBP in nursing involves “providing holistic, quality care based on the most up-to-date research and knowledge rather than traditional methods, advice from colleagues, or personal beliefs” (American Nurses Association, n.d.).  The evidence-based practice combines clinical judgment and specific evidence using an individual’s values, preferences and experiences.  The results from a clinical trial are a small portion of the entire equation.   EBP might be considered a basic recipe in a cookbook, but it must be altered to suit an individual’s taste. EBP was originally used as a self-directed method for practitioners to use to give quality care (Citrome & Arbuck, 2021).  It seems to have changed from serving as guidance for medical personnel to a standard that has been adopted by many institutions.

For example, the recent news that is surrounding the diabetes medication, Ozempic.  This medication was originally produced to lower the A1C of diabetics.  If practitioners had only used Ozempic for the treatment of diabetes, it would have never been discovered that it also helps with heart disease and weight loss.  This is a medication that has many different purposes which might not have been found if practitioners had only used this as the standard for diabetics.  So, while I find EBP as a basic “cookbook”, nurses and physicians need to consider the individualness of the patient and develop a plan that will work for that specific patient.
