Clinicians who use EBP recognize the value of research for their patient population (Wilson & Austria, 2021). Evidence-based practice integrates the best available evidence with clinical knowledge and expertise while considering the patient’s unique needs for optimal patient outcomes. It also means choosing effective, scientifically validated methods to meet patient needs. I can incorporate three strategies into my current practice: (1) maintain a spirit of inquiry, (2) find the best available evidence that relates to the issue, and (3) identify strategies to overcome barriers to EBP implementation in my current workplace.
Asking the question or “trigger” starts the EBP process. I want to maintain my curiosity and always find more effective and efficient ways to practice clinically. There is always an area for improvement. It takes a curious mind to help improve workflow and patient outcomes. This course and the prerequisite courses have helped me with strategies to search for evidence to support EBP proposals. In my current organization, there is a department that is responsible for developing and updating policies and procedures. Finding ways to improve patient outcomes by finding the best available evidence and submitting a proposal is something that I am looking forward to in my practice.
Lastly, developing and implementing strategies to overcome identified barriers to EBP implementation or any quality improvement initiative would help our organization achieve better patient outcomes and staff retention. I have learned that having a shared vision and continued assessment and dialogue with stakeholders improves EBP sustainability. This course has also solidified my commitment to be a member of a professional nursing organization. Professional conferences and literature provide an excellent opportunity to stay current with EBP, network with like-minded professionals, get mentorship, and promote your EBP project.

Three strategies that I have learned in this course that I will now incorporate into my practice are, to always have a spirit of inquiry, to never stop pursuing learning, and using unexpected results to guide and improve and push forward. To have spirit of inquiry is to be curious, open minded, and committed to seeking knowledge and understanding. Spirit of inquiry plays a key role in promoting critical thinking by encouraging individuals to question and challenge the status quo. “It is important for healthcare professionals to actively ask questions about their current clinical practices” (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2018, pg. 28). Always looking for learning opportunities is in my opinion the best way to remain relevant. Those who stop looking to grow or believe they know all that is needed become stagnant in their careers. Lastly, using unexpected results or non-positive outcomes as a means to grow, improve and learn from experience.

Evidence-based practice or EBP is a strong way to lead the nursing profession to excellence. EBP provides top-quality care to our patients and units/organizations. It is imperative to adopt EBP into every day, shift, week, month, year, etc for an organization to become top-tier in providing care and research. Three strategies I will incorporate into my practice as an APRN are to become a champion for change utilizing EBP, participate in EBP projects, and introduce EBP to new graduate nurses or those who are not very familiar with EBP. Creating a culture of utilizing EBP is imperative for sustaining the momentum to participate in research and EBP projects. By becoming a champion for change I positively impact the organization and encourage the use of EBP and a higher level of thinking. EBP is the why behind the do and it is important to participate in the why to understand the do. As stated by Yoo et al., 2019 there is a positive correlation between EBP knowledge, beliefs, and organizational culture and implementation. Therefore by creating a positive culture around EBP one can assume implementation will be successful based on this study. The second strategy will be to participate in EBP projects, one can not become a champion for change if they don’t have the knowledge or experience. By participating firsthand in EBP projects in the organization, I can become an expert and be able to share this knowledge with others who may not be comfortable. Becoming an expert in any field leads to a successful understanding of the field and the ability to teach and pass this knowledge on to those that do not. The third strategy I will incorporate is the passing of the knowledge on to new graduate nurses. It is important to teach and mentor new graduate nurses in the why and not just the do, by sharing EBP knowledge with the nurses of the future you are leaving behind a competent generation to lead EBP in the future.

First, I will definitely utilize a literature review. A good and effective literature review can provide an overview of previous research on a topic that critically evaluates, classifies, and compares what has already been published on a particular topic. It helps me to synthesize and place into context the research and scholarly literature relevant to the topic. It helps map the different approaches to a given question and reveals patterns. It forms the foundation for the author’s subsequent research and justifies the significance of the new investigation (Sonoma State University, n.d.). A literature review is important to me because this gives me a background of what data and research are already available. Conversely, it also gives me an idea of what is yet to be done, studied, or analyzed. I have learned how to find reputable resources and how to criticize their validity and reliability.
Second, I will use a theoretical framework. This help as the foundation on which my study can be developed or as a map to aid in the design of the study. I would like to think of it as a mold for the cookies I am about to make. It gives me guidelines and it helps reduce biases that can sway my research.
Lastly, I think that a solid implementation plan will make all the difference in the success or failure of a project. Careful and meticulous planning of every single goal, process, cost, and timeline is always helpful. Effective research implementation has been shown to save money, improve the safety of care provided, and improve patient outcomes (Roberts et al., 2023)

I think one of the biggest take away from this class is the process of evidenced based practice (EBP) and creating and nurturing a spirit of inquiry. I think that many of us who have been nurses for many years or were taught/mentored by nurses whom have been in practice for many years, have come up in a culture where we were encouraged “to know our place” basically as an assistant to the doctor, rather than an independent thinker. Breaking out of this and owning our autonomy and not being afraid to question why, or is that the best practice is I feel one of the primary reasons healthcare has advanced as quickly as it has. As a nurse leader in my organization, I want to challenge myself, never to get in that mindset of “because that is the way it has always been done” and encourage my peers to always be questioning if what we are doing is best practice. These last two classes have also helped build my confidence in literature reviews and translating research for practice, which is an important role for APRN’s. As well as identifying barriers and ways to overcome those barriers for implementing EBP (Fencl & Matthews, 2017).

Great post! Who could forget those early days of nursing when we were blindly just following orders and knowing our place. I encourage critical thinking at all times. I tell my young nurses to always know what’s going on with the patient and question things that they are unsure of. Some doctors typically just put in protocols without actually evaluating the patient or considering their history. We are the advocate for the patient at all times and despite how the doctor feels about being questioned we must do what’s best for the patient.
Whether a present or future Nurse Leader, one must implement evidence-based practice to improve patient outcomes and healthcare quality (Melnyk, 2019). You both make a valid point. Today, I watched a doctor challenge a patient’s family to follow a prescribed treatment plan or sign out AMA. I intervened politely. After asking a few questions, I learned the family wanted comfort measures, not more treatments. It broke my heart that the physician had never considered Hospice or end-of-life care as an option. He seemed more concerned about following his orders than assessing the patient’s needs. Without proper discharge, the patient would have had no pain management, nutrition, or infection control plan. Maintaining the ‘spirit of inquiry” will be one of my most significant takeaways from this course. It motivates me to get to work early, understand my patient’s care treatment, and question the rationale in each order. I believe this is important for enhanced quality of care for our patients.

“Evidence-based practice (EBP) enhances healthcare quality, improves patient outcomes, reduces costs, and empowers clinicians” (Melnyk; 2019) It is necessary for the advancement of healthcare and healthcare technology to ensure optimal patient outcomes. Three strategies I will now incorporate is encouragement and advocating for new EBP’s for new grads. Typically new grads in residency are required to research an EBP, but I will begin encouraging new grads to develop EBP’s that can really bring along change. I will also develop a committee with leadership to find new innovating EBP’s that have had success. Finally maintain a shared mental framework and cultural change in the facility in order to alleviate the obstacle of reluctance and resistance to change when new EBP’s are introduced.
