Looking through the GCU library for an interesting translational research study, I came across this one titled “Enhanced differentiation of human dopaminergic neural cell model for preclinical translational research in Parkinson’s disease.” Harischandra and colleagues (2020). According to this study, there are treatment options for Parkinson’s patients, such as deep brain stimulation and medications like levodopa, but these treatments only scratch the surface of the problem (Harischandra et. al, 2020). They claim that in order to provide future (better) treatment for these patients, they must examine dopaminergic neurons as well as the dopamine transporter (Harischandra, et. Al, 2020). They attempted to conduct studies on rats but discovered that the cells differed in such a way that the results would be inaccurate (Harishchandra, et. Al, 2020). They then used embryonic stem cells to create LUHMES cells that more closely resembled the pathways they were attempting to achieve (Harischandra, et. Al, 2020).

They are in the T1 phase, pre-patient and practice, and are in the lab studying the real effects on neural pathways by performing experiments on these cells (Translational Research, n.d.). I won’t lie, the study is lengthy, and the process they used involved a ton of chemicals and days of watching these cells develop into what they needed, but after 5 days, their processes had significantly increased dopamine reuptake in the cells (Hasichandra, et. Al, 2020). Because stem cells are not always available for drug research, the ability to develop these LUHMES cells for testing is extremely promising for the future of Parkinson’s research and drug testing (Harischandra et. Al, 2020).

The article further elaborates that the approaches applied only touch on the surface of the issue that has been identified. From the research study highlighted, there is the application of T1 translational research. The approach that has been used has proved critical when it comes to the determination of the outcomes of the research process. From the study highlighted, it has been found that Parkinson’s is a disease or disorder that greatly impacts the functioning of the brain. The conditions often lead to stiffness, shaking, and difficulty with body balance, walking, as well as general coordination (Rubio et al., 2019). The study highlighted that the symptoms of Parkinson’s diseases normally start and progress gradually and worsen over time. Stroke incidence has decreased in the United States for the first time in history in recent years. However, the incidence of stroke has always been higher in older adults than in younger adults, particularly in older women (Portz et al., 2018). Older adults aged 80 and up account for approximately 17% of all stroke patients and are at a high risk of mortality and hospitalization (Portz et al., 2018). This journal is in the T4 stage of translational research, in which the findings of previous stages are disseminated and implemented. This translational study sought to investigate the effects of physical fitness and exercise on older adults suffering from chronic stroke. A substantial body of research has been conducted to investigate the relationship between self-management interventions such as physical fitness and exercise and chronic stroke. Schmid et al. (2014), for example, discovered that enrolling in a yoga program that included physical activities such as walking resulted in physical improvements such as improved body balance in patients with chronic stroke.

Portz et al. (2018) investigated whether physical fitness and exercise could be used as a clinical intervention for chronic stroke management based on previous research. After implementing the information, Portz et al. (2018) discovered that it is critical for health care professionals to incorporate self-management interventions such as physical fitness and exercise in managing chronic stroke among older adults. They will improve their quality of life, strength, and endurance by incorporating yoga practice. This type of research will also encourage more health care researchers to conduct translational research in order to reach phase 4 (T4), where yoga can be used as an evidence-based intervention for chronic stroke.

This is very interesting. Stroke has long been a major concern in the United States. However, the number of strokes in the United States has decreased in recent years. However, the incidence of stroke in older adults has always been higher than in younger adults, particularly in older women. Stroke is caused by a variety of factors, including being overweight and eating unhealthy foods (Kamin et al., 2020). The translational research and methodology used greatly provide insight into stroke incidences and approaches that can be taken to improve the significant reduction in stroke incidences in the entire United States of America. T4 translational research was used in the identified study. The knowledge gained or obtained in previous stages of research has been disseminated and implemented in the research process (Portz et al., 2018). Self-management interventions are critical in the treatment of stroke patients. Some of the self-management procedures may include physical activity adherence as well as measures to reduce obesity cases.
