Plagiarism involves using other people’s work, phrases, thoughts, and information without acknowledging the owners. According to Grand Canyon University (n.d.), it also comprises paraphrasing sources that do not match the student’s original work without the proper acknowledgement. Self-plagiarism is another case where a student reuses their previous work for submission in another section.

It is considered literary theft since credit is not given to the owner. Plagiarism contributes to academic dishonesty, which has significant consequences in the GCU community. Irrespective of whether it is intentional or unintentional, it can lead to the withholding of one’s grades.

GCU requires all students to use LopesWrite, the plagiarism-checking software. LopesWrite is highly effective in preventing plagiarism. Submitting a paper to LopesWrite returns the plagiarism score. GCU Technical Support (n.d.) states that it returns the similarity score indicating what should be revised, partcularly when the score is more than 20%. The tool is an excellent revision guide for students before handing assignments to the instructor.

An additional method that can be used to prevent plagiarism is writing using one’s own words. This means that one should minimize paraphrasing whenever possible. Paraphrasing is only okay when minimally done in a piece of text and citing the work at the end of the sentence. Islam et al. (2022) assert that using one’s thoughts and ideas is the best way to avoid plagiarism. It is crucial to distinguish one’s work from an original source. Even when translated from a different language, it still is someone else’s work and must be cited. Besides, where direct quotes must be used, it is important to use quotation marks.

Using Lopes at GCU it’s a great tools that’s helping students to provide more accuracy of their papers while following the guidelines. By continuing to educate students in academic writing skills and expected academic practice, as well as establishing a protocol of collecting and checking student writing samples, we can reduce plagiarism, provide a disincentive for students who may seek to engage in contract cheating.

Also Some research describes plagiarism as “theft or misappropriation of intellectual property and the substantial unattributed textual copying of another’s work. It does not include authorship or credit disputes. The theft or misappropriation of intellectual property includes the unauthorized use of ideas or unique methods obtained by a privileged communication, such as a grant or manuscript review.

Plagiarism is when a writer intentionally uses someone else’s language, ideas, and work without acknowledging it’s source. (Grand Canyon University (GCU) Library, 2022)

Some examples of plagiarism include copying large pieces of text without citing the source, taking passages from multiple sources and piecing them together, paraphrasing without citing source, turning in your own work from another class without the professor’s permission, buying an essay then turning them in as your own work, and citing a source with inaccurate information. Lopeswrite is a support tool for faculty and students. It checks the submitted documents against student papers, purchased or copied work from essay writing services and a vast array of online content. It generates a report on similarity rating as well as spelling, grammar or style errors. A similarity score of 20% or less is acceptable. (GCU Student Success Center, 2022)

Any assignment with more than 500 words requires a lopeswrite similarity report before submission. If the similarity scores are high, students can still rewrite and revise their work based on the feedback from the report to obtain a more acceptable score and better writing mechanics. (GCU Student Success Center, 2022)

Aside from lopeswrite submission, students can use some of the recommendations to prevent plagiarism provided in the GCU library including planning their paper by identifying their sources, checking their understanding and writing by memory, taking effective notes, and accurately citing sources. (GCU library, 2022) I find checking by understanding and writing by memory most effective but also most difficult because sometimes the ideas may get lost in translation. It requires me to review paragraphs and articles a few times before I can rewrite them in my own words.

Plagiarism is claiming credit or original thoughts when the work was taken from someone else. Plagiarism includes referencing another article, study, body of work, without proper citation and credit given to the original author. Using other’s work to strengthen the argument you are making is acceptable and encouraged, however appropriate citations must be used to ensure that written works are referenced and not plagiarized. LopesWrite provides a report before final submission that shows any referenced works that may be considered plagiarism, and also notifies the author of any incorrect or missing citations.

The writer or student can then make any reference corrections necessary, rewrite or remove the portion of the paper to remove excessive similarities, or remove the unoriginal work from the paper all together. Another resource for preventing plagiarism is Grammarly, this program allows you to use their website to check papers or an extension that works with Microsoft Word to check papers as they are being written for missing or incorrect citations and unoriginal work. Either of these programs provides students the opportunity to fix plagiarism before they submit their paper, especially if it was an inadvertent error.

Goal Attainment Theory

Goal Attainment Theory focuses primarily on setting goals and measuring progress with specific, quantifiable objectives (Gonzalo, 2021). The notion highlights the advantages of health information and the significance of communication between patients and nurses. It also highlights the importance of communication and providing information to the public regarding health issues such as disease prevention viral outbreaks or disease outbreaks such as the COVID-19 pandemic.

The goal attainment theory for me will be applied through education and community development relationships through various means such as schools churches community outreach centers in public gatherings. As a future nurse educator I also want to focus on educating people on HIV aids prevention methods. I’ve come to understand that there are certain populations there are more on the social conservative side that are still vulnerable to contracting HIV/AIDS and other STIs/STD’s.

The goal is to have these difficult discussions with those vulnerable populations that still view sex as a taboo with the purpose of educating them on self love self-care and dispelling shame. In my family I have experienced two people who have died from HIV aids who could have been alive today had they known about the medications that are there that help people live longer lives and the preventative medications that exist that help to prevent acquiring HIV/AIDS.

There are still some people within my culture who are older who still believe that HIV/AIDS can be contracted through touching in affected person and who still believed that is airborne. The goal as a nurse educator is to help those better understand how the virus is contracted and the preventative measures that exist to prevent the requirement of said disease, as well as resources available for screening for sexually transmitted diseases.

Sister Callista Roy’s Adaptation Model of Nursing fits well in the field of healthcare quality and patient safety. Her theory of nursing has been classified as an “Outcome Theory” (Meleis, 2011). As healthcare quality and safety focuses directly on patient outcomes, this model is relevant to this type of work. According to Roy’s theory, the nurse’s role is to assess the patient’s environment, make predictions about how they will adapt to changes in the environment, enact interventions to help the patient adapt to the changed environment and then assess the success or failure of the adaptation (Gonzalo, 2021).

In the specialty of quality and safety, indicators are studied to show the effectiveness of nursing interventions. For example, in order to reduce the incidence of central line associated blood stream infections (CLABSIs), a hospital may develop and enact central line care protocols. These protocols aim to unify practice for a specific population (all patients with central lines). Once the protocols have been in practice for a period of time, metrics can be studied to determine if the incidence of CLABSIs has decreased.

Relating this example to Roy’s Adaptation Model of Nursing, it is clear that this intervention is outcome focused. The goal is to improve patient outcomes by avoiding the sequalae of CLABSIs. In this example, the environment that is being altered is the care that is used to maintain central lines. The predictions regarding how patients will respond to the changed environment are that fewer patients will experience a CLABSI. The follow up evaluation of metrics is the assessment of how the patient adapted to their changed environment.

Roy’s Adaptation Model of Nursing can be applied to many nursing care interventions to facilitate positive change in patient outcomes.

Cheryl Tatano Beck’s Postpartum Depression Theory was developed in the 1990s and gives a framework for providing nursing care to women with postpartum depression. The theory includes three components: bio-psycho-social factors, maternal role attainment, and the critical tasks for maternal role attainment (Wayne, 2023).

As an advanced practice nurse in healthcare Quality and Patient Safety, I believe I can use the components of Beck’s Postpartum Depression theory as a guide to develop a tool that nurses can utilize to screen patients while in the hospital. Based on the data captured in the screening, nurses, physicians, and case managers can be tasked to intervene to provide resources, referrals, and follow-up appointments. before the patient is discharged from the facility. As an APN in Quality, I can track the staff’s compliance with completing the screenings and subsequent assessments and interventions. This data can be used to compare the number of patients diagnosed with postpartum depression at OB follow-up visits to determine if the screening tool is effective

At the hospital where I previously worked as a Mother/Baby nurse, we did not screen patients for postpartum depression. The focus was on ensuring the mother and baby were stable for discharge, mom was exclusively breastfeeding, and the family was educated on caring for the newborn at home. I believe that if screenings are started during the immediate postpartum period, healthcare providers can intervene sooner to offer support. According to Beck (2002), the most significant factor in the duration of postpartum depression is relative to the time it takes for the patient to receive adequate treatment.
