By understanding what types of scholarly nursing research are needed, we can begin to develop strategies for solving this critical issue.

An article examined the nursing shortage from the perspective of employment opportunities, nurse educators, and students (Haddad, Annamaraju, & Toney-Butler, 2022). The authors use data from the National Sample Survey of Registered Nurses to analyze the nursing shortage in the United States. I am pleased so far with this first class in the master’s program. I am enjoying the online format more than I thought I would. I was afraid of it being mostly self-teaching without any connection with my classmates or instructor, but I haven’t found that to be the case. I am learning a lot of valuable information from both the content as well as my classmate’s responses. I have also been pleasantly surprised by how much the information we’re studying is already helping me in my current practice. Many of the topic questions are prompting me to think more deeply about current practice issues and giving me new insight. I’m slowly getting more comfortable with APA guidelines but still feel like it takes a lot of my focus and time.

One challenge that I’ve experienced is that my chosen field of study, healthcare quality and patient safety, doesn’t always lend itself easily to the discussion questions and feels a little bit like trying to fit a square peg into a round hole when answering questions. Perhaps this is because it is a less common specialty than most. On a positive note, this challenge is forcing me to think creatively about a problem which is something that I struggle with.

The evidenced based practice that I mentioned in Topic 5 that is related to my current specialty is Fluid Management in Dialysis Patients. The types of scholarly research required to further investigate this issue would have to be both qualitative and quantitative research. The quantitative methodology uses investigation through statistics and mathematics and involves numerical data. Since results are numerical, they may not be influenced by personal feelings and opinions. Qualitative methodology, on the other hand, describes and translates concepts and phenomena rather than recording frequency. Therefore, the researcher is challenged to interpret the data and draw final conclusions based on observation. (Basias & Pollalis, 2018)

To be able to conduct more research on this issue, I will need both types of data. I chose one of the articles related to this topic. The title of the article is “Blood Pressure and Volume Management in Dialysis: conclusions from a kidney disease: Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO) Controversies Conference”. This article was part of the Kidney Disease Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO) conference report in 2020. It recognizes that blood pressure and fluid control are critical components of dialysis care with substantial impact on symptoms, quality of life, and cardiovascular symptoms. (Flythe et al., 2020)

This article met all the criteria from the CRAAP test. It is current since it was published within the last 5 years. It is relevant since the topic is related to a research conducted on dialysis patients’ fluid management. The multiple authors, all of them listed in the article and all of them are affiliated with reputable institutions and experts in their field and the research was presented at an international conference for Nephrology. Information is accurate as it is verifiable from other scholarly sources, and lastly, the purpose of the study was to develop a global consensus of best practices in blood pressure and fluid management in dialysis patients. Based on my assignment on topic 5, the research method used in this research is quantitative research which is the dominant research framework in the social sciences. Quantitative analysis is a set of strategies, techniques, and assumptions used to study psychological, social, and economic processes by exploring numeric patterns (Wikipedia contributor,2022a).Quantitative research deals with a range of numeric data to investigate simple to highly sophisticated statistical analyses that combine the data to show relationships among the data or compare across aggregated data. Peer review studies are the scholarly work of the author that is scrutinized by others who are considered experts in the same field, which is done to ensure academic scientific quality. The CCCTN Registry is a network of tertiary care CICUs in the United States and Canada. The study was conducted between 2017 to 2020. Code status, palliative care consultation rates, and decisions for comfort measures only before all deaths in the CICU were studied to conclude the topic presented.

5. Purpose- the sources should show the readers if the information is suitable for their research and the author’s intentions are clear.

The intentions were clear from the beginning because it is stated in the title, which is palliative care in cardiac intensive care units. Quantitative research has served its purpose because it collected and analyzed numerical data about the use of palliative care in the CICUs and whether there is room for improvement so patients can benefit from it before it is too late.

Besides, having been published in a reputable nursing journal, the authority is relevant. The article’s information is also accurate since results were gathered from several participants. The topic that I chose to discuss last week was the shortage of nurse educators. The main issues that I addressed in the discussion were budget issues and competition from other advanced nursing roles. Since my main concerns are focused on wage, I believe quantitative research will be the most helpful to investigate this issue. Additionally, peer-reviewed sources are necessary to prove accuracy of the source. The article that I have chosen to utilize is Job satisfaction and the factors affecting satisfaction in nurse educators: A systematic review. This article goes into detail on various topics in regard to job satisfaction for nurse educators: promotional opportunities, salary, conflict, empowerment, and experience (Arian et al., 2018).

The acronym “CRAAP” stands for currency, relevance, authority, accuracy, and purpose. Currency indicates when the source was published and if it is outdated. Relevance is asking if the source meets the specific needs and requirements for your assignment. Authority is looking for who wrote the article and what the author does. Accuracy is asking if the information from the source is accurate and has been cited or verified by others. Purpose looks into a few different topics: purpose of article, intended audience, bias, and outside viewpoints (New Jersey Institute of Technology [NJIT], 2022). Utilizing this acronym when choosing articles is crucial. You always want to make sure that the information you are using is trusted and not outdated. Prior to this class, I have never heard of this acronym, and I will be using it for future research.

The source that I have chosen is from 2018. Since this is within the last five years, this is not outdated. The article goes into detail on different factors, such as salary, that impact the job satisfaction of nurse educators, so it is relevant to my topic of discussion. All three authors of this article, Mahdieh Arian, Mohsen Soleimani, and Mohammad Bagher Oghazian, work at Semnan University of Medical Sciences in Iran. Each of these authors are responsible for writing many peer-reviewed articles. This article has utilized and cited information from 74 scholarly articles. In addition, the article has been cited by at least 19 scholarly nursing journals and is peer-reviewed. The purpose of this article is to identify if nurse educators are satisfied with their jobs. The intended audience is individuals seeking employment as nurse educators. This article could have bias because all three authors work for the same institution. The article uses outside viewpoints from 74 scholarly sources which have been cited.
