There are no differences in focus, population, scope, or intent among these three organizations. All three organizations have different goals but share the purpose of promoting their respective nursing specialty.

The three organizations also require members to be registered nurses in good standing and pay annual dues. These organizations differ slightly in scope, with the AANA focused specifically on nurse anesthetists, the ANA-NY focused on registered nurses in New York State, and the AORN focused on perioperative nurses nationwide. However, all three organizations represent their respective nursing specialty at a state or national level. These organizations provide educational resources, advocacy support, and networking opportunities for their members while working to improve patient care through research initiatives.

As a nurse, I am very interested in healthcare organizations that help promote patient safety and quality care. The three organizations I have chosen all support these ideals in different ways. The American Association of Nurse Anesthetists is dedicated to providing safe patient care by setting high standards for nurse anesthetists. They also work to educate the public about the importance of anesthesia safety. The American Nurses Association-New York (ANA-NY) is a professional organization that represents nurses in all practice settings (Tastan et al., 2014). They promote patient safety and quality care through advocacy, education, and research. The Association of periOperative Registered Nurses is also dedicated to promoting patient safety and quality care. They do this through education and certification programs for perioperative nurses. These organizations align with my goals and worldview, and I would be proud to be a member of each.

One of the nursing organizations that deserves a second look is the AAHFN or Association of American Heart Failure Nurses, a specialty organization dedicated to advancing nursing education, clinical practice, and research to improve heart failure patient outcomes. They have a noble goal, and that is to set the standards for heart failure nursing care. In the hospital where I am currently employed, we have the best heart failure physicians, and I believe that nurses in our unit deserve that distinction as well because we work hand in hand with the heart failure team. If the cardiac ICU nurses are actively pursuing their recognition, being a member of the AAHFN just makes sense. The mission statement of AAHFN is to unite professionals, patients, and caregivers in the support and advancement of heart failure practice, education, and research, thus promoting optimal patient outcomes (, n.d.) NUR 513 class has been a significant and exciting class right from the beginning to this point. The course has been critical in outlining advanced registered nurses’ legal and ethical roles in disease prevention and health promotion. The learning process has been smooth, with the first step involving an outline of the existing advance registered nurse specialties. The topic offered a direction on the scope of advanced practice and was vital in introducing the class.

     I was then glad to understand the ethical and licensure requirements for the diverse advanced nursing practice specialties. In the third week, I identified that there are global perspectives on the advanced nursing role. I also identified my personal worldview, which is highly influenced by my Christian beliefs. In topics 4 and 5, I understood the significance of nursing theories in practice. I also found out that Jean Watson’s Human caring theory significantly aligns with my current practice and would impact my future role as a Clinical Nurse Leader.

      In the sixth topic, I learned about scholarly nursing research and the credibility of nursing articles. Topic 6 prepared me for the next week where I learned about the significance of the evidence-based practice. Topic 8 then outlined the significance and the role of nursing professional bodies. Throughout the class, I have learned about APA best practices, which have been critical in completing my assignments and would influence my all-time research presentations. 

     The goals I set at the beginning of the class have also been met. I have learned and experienced the entire scope of advanced nursing practice. I feel prepared to take up my role as a leader and work with other advanced nurses in different specialties. I am also glad that the research topic will be crucial in my future practice. Besides, applying theories would ensure that all my decisions are based on evidence-based information and frameworks. I am grateful for this class, and I wish everyone the best.​

American Nephrology Nurses Association (ANNA) is a professional organization that represents nurses who work in any areas of nephrology including dialysis, chronic kidney failure, acute care, and transplantation. ANNA develops and updates standards of clinical practice, educates practitioners, supports research, disseminates new knowledge and information, promotes interdisciplinary collaboration, and addresses issues related to the practice of nephrology nursing. They support to advance of nursing science through educational programs, research, and the development of evidence-based practice (American Nephrology Nurses Association, 2022).

California Dialysis Council (CDC) is a statewide organization that exists to address the legislative and clinical initiatives that represent the needs of the renal community. It is at the forefront of alleviating nephrology concerns that affect constituents in California and the renal community at large. CDC’s mission is to provide leadership and assistance to renal dialysis and transplant facilities in a manner that supports continuous improvement in patient care, outcomes, safety, and satisfaction (California Dialysis Council, 2022).

American Organization of Nurse Leaders (AONL) is a national professional organization of nurse leaders. Its mission is to transform healthcare through expert and influential leadership. It promotes professional development for nurse leaders through innovative and competency-based learning experiences, serving nurse leaders at all stages of their career journey. It advocates for the nurse by ensuring that the perspectives and needs of nurse leaders are heard and addressed in public policy issues related to nursing and patient care. It also helps build a community of nurse leaders by forging strong links among nurse leaders in their state or region (American Organization of Nurse Leaders, 2022).

These are the 3 organizations that interest me on top of the American Nurses Association (ANA) which is the premier organization representing the interest of all nurses. ANA is at the forefront of all of improving the quality of health care for all and is the strongest voice for the nursing profession. ANA fosters high standards for nursing practice, promotes a safe and ethical work environment, bolsters the health and wellness of nurses, and advocates for healthcare issues that affect nurses and the public (American Nurses Association, 2022)

These and other organizations exist to support and advocate for nurses and the public. Being a member of these organizations will allow me to provide a small contribution to this mission. I used to be an officer of ANNA for our chapter and the experience allowed me to realize that we have a lot of opportunities to provide support and contribute to the profession. The time that we spend on activities is voluntary and when we go to community outreach programs, it makes us realize that we have made a difference in our own little way. I have also been involved in some legislative issues that may adversely affect the delivery of care to our dialysis patients. I also volunteered to speak with some of our assemblymen and their representatives to advocate for nurses and patients regarding some of these legislative issues. Since my specialty is Nephrology, I chose nephrology-focused organizations. I am currently in the program to be a clinical nurse leader (CNL) so I am also interested in advancing my career as such which explains my interest in AONL.

      The first professional nursing organization I will focus on is the American Nurses Association (ANA). According to American Nurses Association [ANA] (2022), “ANA is the strongest voice for the profession” (para. 1). ANA advocates for nurses by advancing nursing practice, promoting safe work environments, improving the physical and mental health of nurses, and being a voice for health care issues that impact nurses and members of the public. This organization does not have a direct focus, but instead strives to advocate for all registered nurses. The main goal of ANA is to improve the quality of health for all. This organization aligns well with my worldview because I believe everyone has the right to obtain their optimal health. ANA has made great strides to improve the quality of life for nurses and patients throughout the nation.

With my prior experience as a charge nurse in the emergency department (ED), I find it fitting to discuss the Emergency Nurses Association (ENA). As indicated by its name, ENA works to advance the practice of emergency nursing. ENA has a five-year goal with four main topics: practice environment, education, community, and culture. The key objectives are to prevent violence in the ED, expand research and knowledge in emergency nursing, promote ENA presence in every ED, and to provide the best practice and most up-to-date technology and research (Emergency Nurses Association [ENA], 2022). Several strategies have been incorporated to help achieve these goals. From working in the ED, I have been able to see the great impacts of this organization first-hand. The goals and strategies of this organization closely resemble my worldview. Emergency medicine is crucial, and staff must be trained and prepared adequately in order to provide optimal care to the patients we serve.

The final organization I will discuss is the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN). This organization focuses on improving nursing education by establishing quality standards, providing assistance to universities to implement these standards, improving healthcare, and promoting public support for education, research, and practice (American Association of Colleges of Nursing [AACN], 2022). AACN plays a major role in accreditation to ensure baccalaureate and graduate level nursing programs are providing quality education. The main goal of AACN is to promote health and reach health equity. My worldview is for everyone to meet their optimal health, so this organization has very similar values to myself.

Professional nursing organizations are critical in generating idea flows and energy and maintaining a healthy profession. One vital organization is the American Nurses Association (ANA). According to Halstead (2017), the ANA fosters high standards for nursing practice and enhances nurses’ rights in the workplace. To be a member of ANA, one must be a Registered nurse with an active unencumbered in at least one state. They can also be recent graduates who qualify to sit for the RN licensure exam. ANA aligns with my goals of promoting a safe and ethical work environment. It also aligns with the goals of bolstering the health and wellness of nurses. Besides, it aligns with my worldview, which supports proper care and nursing outcomes.

     Another critical professional organization is the National League for Nursing (NLN). NLN is a federal organization for faculty nurses and leaders in nursing education. Fitzgerald et al. (2020) highlight that the organization offers its members professional development, research grants, and networking opportunities. NLN members include nursing schools, individual nurse educators and graduates, and associations dealing with nursing education. The organization is critical in offering my platform for continued education and enhancing improved research for evidence-based practice. It aligns with my goals and worldview since the end goal is enhancing optimum care.

     The American Association of Critical Care Nurses is another critical organization. The organization establishes nursing quality standards and influences the nursing profession to improve healthcare outcomes. They ensure the availability of expert knowledge for acute and critical patient care (Halstead, 2017). Membership is open for individuals with a baccalaureate or higher degree program in nursing. The organization’s role fits my goals and worldview: upholding integrity, inclusion, transformation, and leadership in my nursing practice.
