In this assignment, you will discuss biophysical evidence pertaining to your topic. Everything we do in nursing should be supported by evidence. Whether we are looking to write a policy or nursing standard or make a change in practice to promote patient safety, we look to research (evidence) to guide us in our decision making. Visit the South University Online Library and retrieve two peer-reviewed articles pertaining to biophysical research and your topic of interest. Critique each article, highlighting the strengths and weaknesses of each article. Interpret the statistical analysis and significance of results. Title: NSG 7220 Week 2 Discussion SU 

It appears that others in this group have a better understanding of the expectations we are working toward within this course than I do. However, I will continue to work towards meeting the goals as much as possible to be successful. The population that I will be focusing on for the project will be adult individuals who are in crisis, which will commonly include individuals who are experiencing mental illness. The number of individuals seeking psychiatric services is increasing, and many people in America also believe there is a psychiatric health emergency occurring in the United States (McPhillips, 2022).

The project to help protect individuals from harm and help to de-escalate does meet specific nursing professional expectations, such as ensuring client safety, providing health promotion interventions, and providing psychosocial care. Protecting clients as a team will help strive to meet the sixth doctorate of nursing essential of working together to improve psychiatric health. Conducting literature reviews and researching to improve the lives of others will also work toward meeting the first doctorate of nursing essential. Advocating for the passing of mental health-related public health initiatives will help to meet the fifth doctorate of nursing essential.

It is crucial to be able to understand what could be causing a mental health crisis when caring for clients dealing with trauma or life struggles. Each person is different, and we all handle stress and stressors differently. When thinking of what type of biophysical factors affect individuals experiencing mental health crises, the first two things that come to mind are genetics and chemical imbalances. Kaufmann et al. (2019) noted that there are links to the development of psychiatric illnesses and genetic or hereditary factors. However, they also believe that there is a lot more to learn related to connecting a mental illness to a specific gene or genes.

Since an interest in the possible doctorate of nursing practice (DNP) project may involve being able to de-escalate individuals dealing with mental illness, it is essential to look at the causes of the crisis. For example, if a patient is aggressive, what may cause the patient to be aggressive? Gopika et al. (2023) voiced that a possible link to behavior that is considered aggressive is a biochemical imbalance. Trifu et al. (2020) noted that they believe part of the reason for increased aggression can be linked to increased male hormones, testosterone, and a lack of serotonin.

Another reason why it is necessary to help de-escalate a person who is in crisis mode may be due to suicidal ideation.  Suicide rates have increased dramatically in America over the last decade (Ho et al., 2022). Therefore, nursing staff needs to be able to adequately care for and help individuals who are having suicidal thoughts to help intervene and get the patient psychological treatment services. Patients I have taken care of who have been suicidal have had traumatic events that have happened in their lives. They struggle with mental health issues such as depression, and they have trouble coping with everyday stressors and unresolved grief over the loss of loved ones or possessions. There are various reasons for someone who may want to harm themselves.

When thinking of the study of psychobiology factors that are related to this DNP project idea, it will be vital to realize that I will not be completing any genetic coding or physically studying the linkage of crisis development in relationship to hereditary connections or neurotransmitters. Researching and being able to understand how biophysical factors can affect individuals with mental health disorders is pertinent and essential to applying new measures to promote the improvement of care for this client population.
