This week’s discussion tasks are to evaluate how well things went this term and to identify two goals for continuing my Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) courses. Reflecting on the term and how well things went is a valuable experience that allows one to be able to identify and review what has been learned and acquired after a period of time (Patel & Metersky, 2022). When the term started, I was not sure exactly what was expected of me and my DNP journey. I thought this was the first class that would require me to write a formal proposal for a project I wanted to complete. However, I soon found out that the purpose of the course was to guide us in narrowing down a project topic and earn the required hours before starting the actual project courses.
I have completed many literature reviews each week focused on various mental health topics. I also had to complete some online courses and webinars that were required to continue completing hours at the precepting site, such as infection control and maintaining client confidentiality as examples. All of the learning and time spent working towards identifying a topic that is of interest to me has been beneficial. I have a preceptor that is very open and asks questions to ensure things are going well and moving in the right direction as well.
I was under the impression that I would be working directly with patients, but I was corrected that the de-escalation techniques would be taught to the nursing staff on the units instead of me using them to help clients directly. Providing a teaching class to help nursing staff be able to better de-escalate crisis situations in the acute care unit has been the focus of the proposed project topic so far. The clinical preceptor has also noted that presenting some topics related to self-care and relaxation to the nursing staff is something that she believes will also help the staff to destress. This should help the staff nurses to be able to care for themselves and better care for their patients. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (2023) noted that part of being a great caregiver requires one to be healthy.
Therefore, I conclude that the course and the instructor have helped me work towards meeting the weekly learning tasks and narrowing down a topic that could be used in future classes within this DNP program. One goal I have to work on while moving forward is to ensure I work more on developing the PICOT (patient, intervention, comparison, outcome, and time) question that will focus on the proposed project. Another goal is to ensure that I can continue finding valuable literature that will help support and aid my journey in the program as I get closer to entering the project-focused courses.

Reflection is one of the most important aspects of learning since a student gets a chance to document various experiences, new learning, challenges and how various objectives and goals were achieved during a certain period of time. As such, reflection can be used in various instances such as practicum, which in itself plays a significant role in allowing the student to obtain practical skills and apply what has theoretically been learned in class. As such, it is an experience that immensely contributes to the student’s professional training, education, and development. Reflection can be accomplished in various areas, such as the nature of interprofessional collaboration, critical thinking, clinical decision-making, interaction with the patients, and clinical skills development (Hwang & Koo, 2019). Therefore, the purpose of this assignment is to present an overview of scholarly or clinical activities accomplished during weeks 6-10, the commentary, and evidence of progress toward achieving course objectives and reflections, including thoughts, feelings, and correlation to the South University five pillars of nursing.
The first five weeks gave me an important opportunity to continue learning about the DNP program and the DNP project. Therefore, the six offered a continued chance for development and learning as the journey of collecting further evidence regarding the topic of interest was continued, especially in the aspect of searching for peer-reviewed articles on informatics related to the topic of interest. Therefore during this week, various scholarly activities were accomplished such as:
- A continued literature search to explore articles touching on informatics related to the topic of interest.

There were two main objectives of focus during the sixth week. The first objective was to evaluate the biophysical, psychological, organizational, informatics, ethical, and legal knowledge of nursing science as a foundation for expert clinical practice in a specific nursing clinical specialization (Dang et al.,2021). The other objective was to demonstrate accountability in specialty practice according to accepted standards of care and safety. The objectives were successfully achieved during this week. As part of the week, two research papers on informatics connected to the topic of interest (urinary tract infection and antibiotic stewardship) were explored, summarized, and critiqued (Strudwick et al.,2019). Such an activity was key to giving more information regarding how informatics has been used to help solve the identified problem.
The second objective for this week revolved around the need to demonstrate accountability in specialty practice according to the accepted standards of care and safety. Therefore, as part of the week, strategies for solving the problem in terms of technological applications were explored. Patient health and safety in the clinical environment should be the major focus. Therefore, in efforts to explore better strategies for antibiotic stewardship and urinary tract infection, the second objective was also achieved as appropriate (Bader et al.,2020). It is also important to explore how the activities and experiences during the sixth week helped advance the aspects connected to the South University pillars of nursing. This week’s activities and experience, in particular, correlated to the South University pillars of nursing, such as caring, communication, holism, and critical thinking. Critical thinking was reflected in the peer-reviewed article search, analysis, summary, and critique. As such, the articles were summarized and analyzed in light of how they help accomplish the goals and improve patient outcomes.
The seventh week, just past the midpoint, also offered a chance to continue learning, refine the topic of interest, and collect more evidence regarding what is known regarding the topic and the strategies that have been applied so far. As part of the week, various aspects of research, such as the ethical aspects of research, were studied. For example, articles covering the ethical aspects of research related to the topic of interest were all retrieved and analyzed. It is also important to note that various scholarly activities were undertaken to help achieve the set goals and objectives. They include:
- Literature search, article retrieval, and analysis.
- Peer discussions and replies.
- Formal investigation of various ethical aspects of research

This week was guided by two major objectives, including Translating research findings into evidence-based practice at the individual and healthcare system level and using information technology to evaluate the delivery of healthcare to individuals and internal and community systems (Sheikh et al.,2020). This week still focused on further exploration of the topic of interest by participating in various scholarly activities such as discussion boards, peer replies, and peer engagement. In addition, I managed to explore peer-reviewed articles that explore ethical aspects of research, especially those related or connected to the topic of interest. Exploration of the peer-reviewed articles was also key to the achievement of the goals or focus on translating research findings into evidence-based practice at individual and healthcare system levels. For example, it was noted that research findings regarding research ethics, such as informed consent, patient autonomy, privacy, and confidentiality, have widely been applied in research (Haahr et al.,2020). As the standard of practice, researchers usually have to get clearance from their respective ethical boards before embarking on nursing research dealing with patients directly, and those kinds of research deal with the patient private and confidential data and information.
As earlier indicated, the other objective of focus was to use information technology to evaluate the delivery of health care to individuals and internal and community systems. Therefore, it is also important to explore how this objective was accomplished during this week. As part of the activities during this week, I also explored the ethical aspects of using technology in healthcare delivery to individuals and internal and community systems. One of the points or aspects that came out strongly is that the use of healthcare technology to deliver healthcare has substantially increased in recent years as healthcare leverages technology to improve care aspects such as diagnosis, treatment, and patient management (Ahad et al.,2020). In addition, various technological applications have emerged that mainly focus on improving patient outcomes.
The ethical knowledge learned during this week will be applicable to the DNP project in various ways. For example, it will be applied to the project population. It will be important to obtain informed consent from those who will be involved in the research, alongside ensuring that the project’s aims and focus are communicated to them in time so that they make informed decisions. In addition, it will also be applied by informing them of the project’s procedure and the potential risks and benefits. In addition, it will also be important to ensure that the participant’s data and information are kept private through various strategies such as restricted access and the use of data encryption and passwords where possible. It will also be key to ensure that the data collection plans and strategies all align with the data security plans and guidelines to ensure that all the protocols are aligned with the established rules and regulations.
The experiences and activities of this week also helped advance part of South University’s pillars of nursing, including caring, communication, and professionalism. Caring was demonstrated in that the ethical aspect of research, which ensures patient safety and appropriate care delivery, was explored. The two articles reviewed and summarized this week both had aspects of ensuring the activities carried out during the research process do not put patients’ lives at risk but ensure their safety as needed. The eighth week, like the preceding weeks offered a platform for continued learning and exploration of the topic of interest. Therefore, the focus was majorly on the legal issues related to the topic of interest. Therefore, two articles that focus on the legal issues connected to the topic of interest were retrieved from the South University online library, summarized, and analyzed. The legal aspects were also explored in connection to the nursing standards or safe care as they apply to the topic of interest. During this week, various scholarly and clinical activities were accomplished to help meet the stated goals. The activities included:
- Class discussions
- peer discussions and replies
- , article search, review and content analysis.
The eighth week’s major objectives included evaluating the biophysical, psychological, organizational, informatics, ethical, and legal knowledge of nursing science as a foundation for expert clinical practice in a specific nursing clinical specialization. Through critical thinking, I was able to discuss the legal aspects and their application in patient care and in relation to the topic of interest. Communication was again achieved through formal communication with the instructor regarding various aspects of the course. The journey to the completion of this course moved on to the ninth week. This week also offered a valuable chance to enhance my understanding and knowledge regarding various aspects of the topic of interest further. In addition, it also focused on scholarly activities, such as coming up with a presentation, which was then presented to the classmates concerning the evidence that had been collected regarding the topic of interest. As such, to help accomplish various goals and objectives, the following activities were undertaken:

As discussed earlier, this week also offered a further opportunity to achieve various course objectives and requirements. As such, the objective of focus for the ninth week was to use information technology to evaluate the delivery of health care to individuals and internal and community systems (Ahad et al.,2020). Therefore, this goal or objective was achieved in various ways. For example, the formulation of a PowerPoint presentation requires that an individual be adequately equipped with the right information technology skills. Therefore, by successfully using the computer and Microsoft Office’s PowerPoint software to formulate a presentation, this objective was partially achieved. The evidence obtained so far was also presented, especially in relation to delivering health care to individuals and internal and community systems. In particular, the focus was on how the technological applications and technology have been used and can be used to improve care outcomes related to antibiotic stewardship and individuals with urinary tract infections.
The use of technology in the healthcare sector has significantly grown in recent times, with the last decade experiencing tremendous growth, changes, and achievements. Therefore, it is important for DNP nurses or nurses studying to obtain a DNP to have adequate information regarding the potential impacts of using information technology to deliver health care to individuals and internal and community systems. In addition, it is important to understand the potentials roles that they can play in various aspects to ensure that the information technology is used to the optimum to enhance patient outcomes. It should not just end at what should be done to enhance outcomes related to the use of technology in healthcare but also at potential negative impacts, barriers, and potential threats to patient safety. All these aspects culminate in the effective use of technology and technological applications to help improve patient outcomes.
The experiences and activities of the eighth week also helped advance South University’s pillars of nursing, which are caring, communication, holism, critical thinking, and professionalism. In particular, the aspect that was expressed or explored during this week to a greater extent is communication. Presenting research findings appropriately requires that an individual possess or acquire effective communication skills. A formal presentation usually involves an audience interested in what is to be presented, implying that there is a need for the presenter to be ready to address questions and concerns, aspects that are not easily achievable without effective communication (Dang et al.,2021). Therefore, by successfully presenting my research findings, especially the evidence collected in relation to the topic of interest to my peers, I met this aspect. Critical thinking was also roped in as there was a need to make the presentation as creative and attractive as possible.
It was a relief knowing that we were in week ten and that it was the last week. Getting to attend to assignments and discussions in week ten was proof of the course journey that I had been on for the previous nine weeks. Therefore, this week also played a big role in the process of learning since various aspects were explored. The week was a wrap-up of what has been learned regarding evidence-based practice/research, which was mainly accomplished through discussions and assignments in these courses and through the practicum experience. In addition, this week entailed aspects such as a reflection on what goals were successfully achieved or met during the course, as well as the goals that were yet to be achieved. Therefore, various activities were undertaken to help achieved the formulated goals and objectives. The activities included:
- Written reflection concerning the achievement of goals and how the DNP essentials were met in the course activities.
- Peer discussions and replies regarding the week ten discussion.
- Readings regarding portfolio development.
This week also played a big role in achieving the established goals and objectives. Part of this week entailed portfolio development as part of professional development. Therefore, various barriers to portfolio development were explored. In particular, three barriers and their potential solutions were explored. One of the barriers to proper portfolio development is being unsure of what should be included in the document. Choosing the right content and how best to include it can be challenging; for example, choosing the most compelling and relevant content can be a challenge (Hamilton, 2020). Appropriate development of a portfolio requires adequate time; hence, if a person has a busy schedule, the lack of adequate time becomes a barrier as there are various competing priorities to be attended to.
This week’s project has explored a written narrative that covers various aspects of learning and scholarly activities that have been undertaken from week six to week ten. Therefore, various aspects were discussed regarding what was accomplished through the six weeks. The scholarly and clinical activities accomplished during the five weeks, commentary and evidence of progress toward achieving specific objectives, and the reflections, including thoughts, feelings, and correlations to South University’s five pillars, were all explored.
