This course offered a good chance to gain competencies and knowledge that are key to effective nursing practice. In particular, the key competencies and knowledge gained include leadership, safety and quality, and evidence-based practice (Tucker et al.,2021). All these will form part of my journey in nursing practice from now on and into the future. For example, the new knowledge on the importance of safety and quality will be used to appropriately advocate for patient safety while in the care environment. I now know better that patient safety in the care environment leads to patient satisfaction and reduces unnecessary spending as patients are protected from unwanted events such as medication errors, patient falls, hospital-acquired infections, and pressure ulcers, among others (Mueller et al.,2019). I will also proactively engage in quality improvement projects. As such, I will always strive to identify opportunities for quality improvement in the care environment and form collaborative teams that can help solve various problems by ensuring that they bring their expertise on board.
It is important to communicate the value of these competencies to the current position or a position that I may seek in the future (Hökkä et al.,2021). One way of communicating the value is taking the leading by example; the competencies can best be demonstrated when an individual demonstrates the importance of the competencies and why they should be nurtured and used in the patient care environment. I will also communicate the values by actively engaging in patient care, collaboration, and patient advocacy from time to time (Kokorelias et al.,2019). The value of these competencies can also be demonstrated when seeking a position by writing a formal cover letter addressed to potential employers. Such cover letters can always be accompanied by a portfolio or a curriculum vitae as a backup to show all the academic qualifications and how one fits a particular job.
