Additional Thoughts for Consideration:
Good morning, everyone,
This is such an important question you are all responding to. As technology and use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) continues to improve, there are new trends in higher education that are disturbing regarding researching and writing papers. There are companies that will write and sell papers to students. Nurses have been named the most trusted profession for over 20 years and many rides on honesty and integrity for nurses. I have seen many things in my 30+ years in the profession and education and there is never any good outcome by using someone else’s work or buying a paper or creating an AI generated assignment. The necessary learning to ensure that knowledge is gained does not happen, which could potentially impact patients.
What are your thoughts on use of AI?
Well, as much as AI will thrive well in the academic world, there is still an ongoing trials of Artificial Intelligence in Healthcare. As you’re aware that nursing as a profession, is both theoretical & clinical in nature. AI may thrive well in the future delivering programed papers, lectures, researches to nursing students. But, on the clinical settings, this may have some unforeseen implications. This notwithstanding to say that Nurses are alien to an advancement in technology like AI.
With that being said, I think personally, we should look AI in health care setting from a positive perspective. The world is revolving, & nursing inclusive. Yes, few educational flaws can’t be over emphasize as its introduction to academic settings like higher institutions may make students become too lazy by making them don’t want to go all out for their research works the way they could have done without AI, & this include the nursing students as well. Notwithstanding, it also makes studying & reading easily & readily accessible.
I believe, that is the way I understood the above question on AI that you raised.
Thank you for sharing, Tolulope. AI is definitely trending and changes perhaps on a daily basis. What is most important is that in education, academic integrity is maintained, meaning that AI should be the creator or thinker for the creation of the work produced by the student.
My thought on the AI in the assistance of writing assignments is that it is wasteful. It is a waste of time, and like every other way to cheat and cut corners that has arose, I believe this will continue to be checked for and caught. I don’t foresee these chat sites that allow artificial content to be made persisting without regulation in the near future, as it is a risk for the future of academics. I also believe it’s just morally incorrect and an upsetting risk to take. The convenience gained does not in anyway outweigh the loss of knowledge gained, or the risk of being terminated from a program.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts. AI is definitely something that will continue to be out there; however, AI certainly is concerning. There was a court case against someone using AI as evidence. Ultimately, there was determination that the AI documents were not true…but the end result could have been disastrous.

AI can be a good thing but that all depends on how it’s being used. AI can help children who have mental and physical disabilities in a school setting when teachers and parents are not able. AI on the other hand can be misused in the ways that you mentioned like companies writing and selling papers to students. Using AI in any other form than what they are originally intended for (collecting data, advancing technology in a work setting, helping students with disabilities, etc) should not be excused. From an academic standpoint, nursing students should uphold academic integrity and take pride in completing all written assignments using their own knowledge, and experiences, and also citing sources as required.
Thank you, Andrea. When AI is used for assignments, there is no learning that occurs. That learning can mean the difference in outcomes for future patients or organizational needs. If one did not put in the work, there could be many affected.
The use technology and Artificial Intelligence (AI) has both positive and negative impacts in the nursing higher education. The use of new technology helps the students to have good learning experiences. But as you have mentioned above Nursing being the trustful profession which has direct impacts on health of the people, by using AI generated assignment there would be only quantitative nurses instead of qualitative production of nurses. Using AI in writing papers is the cheating on own academic qualification. I think the use of AI is unethical in nursing settings.
