I think the public perception of nurses improved in a positive direction during and after covid. Nurses worked at a time when the entire world was in a vulnerable state. Many nurses put their selves, and their families aside to help care for covid patients. They worked overtime, they faced nurse burnout and fatigue, and they worked during a serious PPE shortage. They used EBP such as proning ventilated patients to help improve PEEP.

During COVID-19, nurses stepped up to provide care and support for patients and loved ones affected by the illness — often serving as the lone source of comfort for patients when safety protocols prevented their families from being with them in the hospital. Nurses have worked through the emotional toll of seeing patients suffer and through fears of becoming infected (Maryville University 2023).

Nursing has been the most trusted profession for over two decades. There has been a slight decline this year, which is concerning The article below can be copied and pasted into a browser

Thank you so much. Covid-19 pandemic crisis has caused a widespread unrest in societies and unprecedented changes in lifestyle, work and increasing social distance has severely affected human relations. I think nurses and all other healthcare professionals have gained respect since the pandemic era because most of the families have lost one or more close members in the hands of nurses and without their help. They are really appreciated for the work they do everyday.

I believe the public perception of nursing during and post COVID changed dramatically with more and more people appreciating healthcare workers. While I understand Covid-19/Variants are still present, I think we all know what I mean when I say, “post covid”. The Covid-19 Pandemic was devasting to global health, humanity and the health care system was tested to the maximum. One memory that stands out the most was the 7PM clap, cheering, hoot and holler in support for front line workers and for the perseverance of the human race. I believe the public perception of nursing has improved.

The appreciation of nurses during Covid brought nurses and healthcare workers into the spotlight in away that effected everyone, not just those who were sick and suffering. In the article, Survey: Majority of People Believe Nursing is a favorable Career Choice Since Pandemic, by (Janice Monti 2022), 81% percent of respondents were in favor of the nursing profession. Generation X and the Baby Boomers showed the highest rankings. The interesting concept of this survey was after the nursing profession was put into the spotlight of the pandemic. Overall, I believe the community supports and appreciates nursing as a Profession pre or post Covid.

I do believe that COVID brought nursing and other healthcare workers, as well as other frontline workers, into a positive light for those we serve, overall. We did see a 10% decline in nursing trust the past years so,this will be a trend that we needed to watch.

According to a research paper  Girvin et al (2016) The public has great confidence in the  nursing profession but it is not because they comprehend the nursing role but  preferably because of respect held for the tradition, conceptualization of selflessness and nurses being viewed as  industrious. As a nurse i have come to the realization that our role is not understood by the public and i think it is of no fault of the public but what the norm is for many facilities.Everything to do with the patient is impressed upon the nurse . If a patient has an issue with food, electrical, their floors whatever it may be it is  passed onto the nurse so they do not understand our roles because our roles are not clear cut. We do everything and we are looked upon as hard workers. We make everything possible to make their stay comfortable. This same study suggests that interactions wider the clinical setting and away from what the media’s  portrayal about the recruitment crisis would have a great impact on the public’s perception of nursing .

Hoeve et al(2013) Says the perception of the public about the profession is because they are unnoticed and they have a deficit in public discourse . This can be improved over time if the public is informed through social platforms of our professionalism. We have to work on being noticed, improving ourselves academically and having  a voice in the work setting. Also making our way up the ladder of nursing pursuing jobs such as case manager, nurse educator or clinical nurse specialist could have a great impact on defining clear cut roles for nurses in the public’s eyes.

The nursing profession is highly regarded by the general public as a critical component of healthcare delivery. However, the perception of nursing is influenced by several factors such as media representation, personal experiences with healthcare, and cultural values. According to a study by Wang et al. (2021), “the portrayal of nursing in the media can shape public perceptions of nursing as a profession and influence recruitment and retention.” It is the duty of every single nurse to make sure that the profession is seen in a bright light every single day. The public eye is quick to judge as soon as a negative story breaks, so as a nurse, the duty is to always showcase the positive side of nursing.

To address common stereotypes about nursing, it is essential to educate the general public on the professional nurse’s role and scope of nursing within a changing healthcare system. This can be achieved through public outreach campaigns, community events, and partnerships with local schools and colleges. As stated by the American Nurses Association (ANA), “educational campaigns that put focus on how important the role nurses play in healthcare delivery can effectively increase public awareness and understanding of the value of the profession tremendously.”

Furthermore, promoting the image of nursing through positive media representation, and highlighting the diverse roles and responsibilities of nurses can help combat negative perceptions. Finally, increasing public access to healthcare can provide opportunities for the public to interact with nurses and gain a deeper appreciation for their work. As stated by the ANA, “Increased public engagement with nurses can, without a doubt, help to bridge the gap between how nursing is perceived and the reality of the nursing profession.” Therefore, educating the public on the professional nurse’s role and scope of nursing, increasing public access to healthcare, and promoting positive media representation are critical to improving the public’s perception of nursing.
