NRS 430 Describe how the nursing profession is viewed by the general public
I think the public perception of nurses improved in a positive direction during and after covid. Nurses worked at a time when the entire world was in a vulnerable state. Many nurses put their selves, and their families aside to help care for covid patients. They worked overtime, they faced nurse burnout and fatigue, and they worked during a serious PPE shortage. They used EBP such as proning ventilated patients to help improve PEEP.
During COVID-19, nurses stepped up to provide care and support for patients and loved ones affected by the illness — often serving as the lone source of comfort for patients when safety protocols prevented their families from being with them in the hospital. Nurses have worked through the emotional toll of seeing patients suffer and through fears of becoming infected (Maryville University 2023).

Thank you so much. Covid-19 pandemic crisis has caused a widespread unrest in societies and unprecedented changes in lifestyle, work and increasing social distance has severely affected human relations. I think nurses and all other healthcare professionals have gained respect since the pandemic era because most of the families have lost one or more close members in the hands of nurses and without their help. They are really appreciated for the work they do everyday.
I believe the public perception of nursing during and post COVID changed dramatically with more and more people appreciating healthcare workers. While I understand Covid-19/Variants are still present, I think we all know what I mean when I say, “post covid”. The Covid-19 Pandemic was devasting to global health, humanity and the health care system was tested to the maximum. One memory that stands out the most was the 7PM clap, cheering, hoot and holler in support for front line workers and for the perseverance of the human race. I believe the public perception of nursing has improved. The appreciation of nurses during Covid brought nurses and healthcare workers into the spotlight in away that effected everyone, not just those who were sick and suffering. In the article, Survey: Majority of People Believe Nursing is a favorable Career Choice Since Pandemic, by (Janice Monti 2022), 81% percent of respondents were in favor of the nursing profession. Generation X and the Baby Boomers showed the highest rankings. The interesting concept of this survey was after the nursing profession was put into the spotlight of the pandemic. Overall, I believe the community supports and appreciates nursing as a Profession pre or post Covid.

I do believe that COVID brought nursing and other healthcare workers, as well as other frontline workers, into a positive light for those we serve, overall. We did see a 10% decline in nursing trust the past years so,this will be a trend that we needed to watch.
