After reviewing the course objectives, I have had little knowledge of many of the topics. The one that I have no knowledge of is on policy and environmental issues. Financial and Management were not really a focus in my ADN program. I look forward to learning more in detail about how social determinants relate to disease. Knowing how they relate would really expand my knowledge of how to practice in my future as a nurse.REPLY

I am interested about week 2 topic- social health. Recently, I love to do some research about social health and be aware of all those advertisement and the food or snacks that I eat. I think it is important to educate the public about the nutrition and health.
I have no prior knowledge about all other objects.
I have heard about community nurse before but not sure what they do exactly. So I want to dive into this topics and discuss with my instructor and classmates.
So far, I do not have any concerns, I wish I can get a detail feedback from instructor when I have some concerns or questions.

I have gone through the topics for the five weeks. The weekly objectives for weeks 1 to 3 looks familiar. The objective for week four looks tough. It deals with finance, management and sustainability of the U.S health care system . I am not familiar with this at all.
The course-related topics I would like to discuss with my instructor and classmates will be topic five. My concern will be how to apply spiritual considerations to care for people during disaster and many more questions. i believe by the time we get to the end of the class what seems unfamiliar will be made more explicit.

- I’m excited to learn about emergency preparedness and disaster management. Concern is and I think will always be time management.

I am familiar with the course objectives, but look forward to epidemiology and public health. With Covid still being recent and its impact on healthcare, I think a lot could be done differently. I look forward to reading to about ideas for change. Public health is a intriquant part of making our patients aware of health concerns and how to progress toward health and wellness.REPLY

I have taken some classes while at my undergrad at UC Davis as a human development major and community and public health was one of those classes. I believe most of the objectives I will have not much difficulty with. I do want to know more about policy briefs to present to community leaders and CBOs. I hope to learn much more about public health than what I currently know.

I have worked for California’s Department of Public Health and Health Care Services in a variety of roles, particularly having to deal with creating and implementing policy’s and programs based on legislation. With that experience, I find the weekly objectives very relatable. For example, I have experience working with community health nurses and stakeholders, being culturally competent, knowing social determinants of health and being aware of vulnerable populations. I have some experience dealing with global issues and how they affect the public health system. I would like to learn more about how policy in the U.S. health care delivery system affects specific populations, since I am most used to state policy and not the entire U.S. I do not have any additional questions or concerns and look forward to starting!

After reviewing the topics for the next five weeks, I’ve come to find that I have a good basic knowledge of almost all of them. However, the one that I look forward to learning more about and discussing in this course is the specific policies and environmental issues section. I’d like to dive deep into the effectiveness of the U.S. healthcare system and see the ways it affects specific populations. This past month I spent time doing a medical internship abroad in Genova, Italy. For three weeks I was able to go to the different units (OBGYN, general surgeries, and cardio surgery) and observe the differences between practices and overall care between the US and Italy. I’m eager to see how I can integrate my experience into this paper having witnessed the differences between healthcare systems other than the United States. The objectives I have no prior knowledge of are the application of the epidemiology triangle and the communicable disease chain model, at least they are not currently ringing a bell. Nonetheless, it’ll be great to expand my knowledge (or refresh it) in both of those sections as we’ve seen them play big parts in our world with tragic events like the pandemic or even just the annual flu. Currently, my concerns revolve around finding a community representative and the process that goes with it. Like any course, the nerves and anxiety will eventually settle once getting started, but for now the unknown feels uncertain. In the end, I’m very excited to get started, learn, and collaborate with everyone. Thank you!REPLY

I have a general idea of the role of a public health nurse. However, I have no knowledge about community teaching plans & delivery, finance, management, and sustainability methods of the U.S. healthcare system.
I’m curious to learn about the budget side of public health programs, possibly how they are audited, as well as how the local governments evaluate the effectiveness of these program initiatives/campaigns.REPLY

If that counts, I have some knowledge about communicable diseases, from prior microbiology courses and the COVID-19 pandemic. I do not have any prior knowledge of community health nursing or epidemiology, but I am eager to learn about all the topics! I can’t wait to discuss emergency preparedness and disaster management.
