Interprofessional collaboration brings together various experts from different fields to reach common goals, however this can often come with conflict. Working with a large team means there will be varying opinions, values, and cultures, which can be a challenge within professional practice. Some main factors that can lead to conflict can be miscommunication, hierarchy barriers, and having differing personal values. It is important to ensure that a team shares common interests with their each other and their organization because “When the employees’ values align with those of an organization’s values, increased engagement and dedication to the organization is often noted. Shared values among employees and their employers support a positive working culture that contributes to successful outcomes and outperforms competitors” (Helbig et al., 2022). Sharing values and beliefs within professional practice can mitigate conflict, as it leads to open communication and more encouragement to work towards a resolution. Sharing values aids as a framework to come to decisions that will positively benefit each member of a team and their patients. Some strategies to prevent workplace conflict and violence can be using effective communication and minimizing the feeling of hierarchies. Often times nurses come into conflict with other professionals, leading to a feeling of being unheard and frustration. Therefore, “Eliminating the hierarchy barriers is key to ensuring nurses have the confidence to speak up without fear of being reprimanded by physicians. advocating for patient needs, ensuring safe, quality care is provided requires an environment where information is shared freely and everyone’s voice is heard” (Murphy, 2020). By using effective and open communication, a team is more likely to prevent conflict and provide higher quality patient care when they have a better understanding of where they are each coming.
