Assessment Description

The Topic 1 Resource, “The Essentials: Core Competencies for Professional Nursing Education,” represents the core competencies of professional nursing education and provides a framework that nursing programs use to prepare professional nurses. The RN-BSN program at Grand Canyon University meets the requirements for clinical competencies as defined by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) and the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN), using both direct and indirect care experiences for practicing nurses. In your practicum course, you will complete these hours with a preceptor and work to develop a change project.

Which of the 10 domains in the The Essentials: Core Competencies for Professional Nursing Education” are you interested in learning more about and why? Based on the readings in the Class and Topic 1 Resources, what are some characteristics of successful students and what strategies can you implement to be a successful student? Identify a role model or mentor who would be able to support your professional growth.

NRS 415 Summary of Current Course Content Knowledge

The topic that interests me in learning more about is person-centered care (#2). The concept of treating each individual as an individual rather than as a patient, a statistic, or a means to an end (seeking treatment) appeals to me a lot. Care that is oriented toward the individual is comprehensive, tailored to their needs, fair, considerate, sympathetic, coordinated, supported by evidence, and age-appropriate. Every aspect of nursing practice, from pediatrics to geriatrics, is based on the scientific body of knowledge that supports person-centered care. Individuals’ unique determinants of health, as well as their variety, preferences, beliefs, needs, and resources, must be respected as cornerstones of person-centered care. In a care team, the patient is both an active participant and the one in charge. As part of person-centered care, nurses must make an effort to understand their patients as a whole by learning about their relationships with significant others, family, and the community. Nursing is both a science and a practice that uses a relational perspective to promote empowerment, active engagement, and mutuality. In person-centered care, which prioritizes diversity, fairness, and inclusion, the planning and delivery of care across time, domains of care, and developmental levels is based on clinical judgment and the best available research. An important part of nursing is making or contributing to diagnoses, which are crucial for developing an educated care plan and enhancing treatment results (Olson et al., 2019). When it comes to operations that influence individual treatment, system-level diagnoses are just as important. Humanizing health and healing from birth to death, person-centered care creates shared meaning among healthcare providers, patients, and the healthcare system as a whole (AACN, 2021).Time management seems to be the recurring theme for becoming a successful student (Murphy, 2015). I will definitely be breaking my day into blocks in order to stay on track. It is strange how at work I manage my time the best way I know how by clustering care and delegating. At home, on the other hand, I struggle. I am hoping this time around I will be able to manage my work, school, and life much more effectively than I have in the past. Additionally, I would like to become more proactive in my studies. In the past, I have always been a procrastinator, and a lot of my work has not been the greatest. I was hoping to take the initiative to complete assignments early, so it would also reduce stress. I feel like making a calendar to organize my schedule is the most effective way for me to keep up due to the fact that I have two work schedules as a full-time student, and I enrolled with a trainer and nutritionist. And my first grandchild is due on June 21. I will have to be focused and keep motivated because I will also graduate at the same time.

The identification of a role model or mentor who supports one’s professional development and growth is critical to attaining expected academic and professional success. The role model offers guidance, advice and support to nursing students as they navigate their nursing careers (Rodríguez-Pére et al., 2022) I have been a nurse for many years and have been encouraged and had a lot of influence in my career by many charge nurses, DON’s and Dr’s to pursue further, but to say just one person, I cannot.

The core domain that interests me is domain 5. This domain talks about quality and safety working hand in hand. “Quality and safety are interdependent, as safety is a necessary attribute of quality care. For quality health care to exist, care must be safe, effective, timely, efficient, equitable, and person-centered. Quality care is the extent to which care services improve desired health outcomes and are consistent with patient preferences and current professional knowledge (IOM, 2001).” (P.39). I feel this is the most important domain that should be reinforced daily by all who are working in the medical field. Quality and safety works on many levels like maintenance issues, medication issues, compliance and patient care, employee mental health, prevention issues, and many other levels. The nursing staff is primarily in leading Quality and safety due to the fact they are working with patients and see outcomes good and bad. “Essentially, everyone in health care is responsible for quality care and patient safety. Nurses are uniquely positioned to lead or co-lead teams that address the improvement of quality and safety because of their knowledge and ethical code (ANA Code of Ethics, 2015). Increasing complexity of care has contributed to continued gaps in healthcare safety.”(p 39)

   The characteristics of successful students I found in the “7 Habits of Highly Effective Nursing Students.” This article talks about managing your time, studying smart, asking for help, staying focused, making realistic goals, being proactive, and rewarding yourself. So far I am finding it difficult to navigate the website and find all the articles referenced in the discussion. I need to work on studying smart. Getting to know my surroundings will be beneficial to learning and completing the classes.
