Before taking the Post-TANIC self-assessment I felt really confident that I did improve a little in the area of information literacy, however, I still need to make further improvements to be more competent and proficient at utilizing resources and literature databases effectively for the research of information management, being able to evaluate the quality of the resources and research with educating and developing a skillset on defining the specific target area of research. My dilemma with information literacy is being able to pinpoint the correct terms and keywords for searching the necessary content that is needed for my search.

Which two competencies do you think may benefit you in your future role as an APN and why?

Nurses play a significant role in recognizing, understanding, progressing, and translating the necessary education and informational needs of patients, these skills all serve as a benefit to advanced practice nursing because it helps to enhance patient compliance in their healthcare treatment plan and promote efficient and optimal holistic healthcare (Buchanan & Nicol, 2019). Thus, to become fluent, proficient, and competent in informational literacy including facilitating the development of information literacy in patients’ nurses need to become familiar with informational literacy models and frameworks (Buchanan & Nicol, 2019). As also stated by Farokhzadian et al (2021), one of the most essential requirements for nurses’ readiness to implement evidence-based practice is to improve their information literacy skills, and through learned evidence-based practice skills nurses will be able to apply the appropriate and effective research findings in their nursing practice to provide high-quality, safe and compassionate nursing care and be able to make decisions based on the most recent evidence in clinical settings. Therefore, nurses need to be provisioned with the necessary information literacy skills to obtain the most recent research findings to provide sympathetic, safe, ethical, and cost-effective health care as it is fundamental for the successful implementation of evidence-based clinical practice (Farokhzadian et al, 2021).

The competency of clinical information management is associated with the quality of care, critical thinking, problem-solving, ethical knowledge, clinical decision-making, focusing on skills, teamwork, and collaboration. Advanced practice nurses need to remain efficient in clinical decision-making competence to maintain the retention of traditional life-saving nursing skills, ethics, effective patient care, and fundamentals for maintaining patient safety (Wallin et al., 2022).

Which two competencies did you achieve in this course? Explain.

The two competencies in this class that I achieved educational efficiency were informational literacy and clinical information management. This course has taught me how to analyze current and emerging technologies to support safe practice environments and to optimize patient safety, cost-effectiveness, and health outcomes by maximizing the skillset of having proficient and competent clinical information management. I have learned how to utilize the TIGER framework to help integrate informatics competencies by identifying knowledge and skillsets in my clinical decision-making. Also, through studying the efficacy of informational literacy I have gained proficiency and competency in being able to recognize when further educational and evidence-based research is needed, how to search for the specifically targeted information that is needed, and how to navigate the informatic technologies and provided CDS, which is critical in obtaining optimal holistic patient-centered care, patient compliance, patient safety, and safe professional nursing practice.

I definitely feel that my strong points are still in basic word processing and computer skills, however I feel that I understand more of the language used in the TANIC assessment and can explain things related to security, protecting PHI and systems better than when we started. My levels of proficiency have increased in the second assessment and overall have gained knowledge in the healthcare informatics sector.

Which two competencies do you think may benefit you in your future role as an APN and why?

I have developed a stronger understanding between the APN and computer technologies and systems that assist in clinical decision making. Being able to have the working knowledge of CDSS and how they can assist with alerts and recommendations is an important key to safe practice as an APN. Another competency that is a benefit, especially to community based practice is the knowledge of resources available to patient via apps, web pages, EMR systems and reputable websites they can access for healthcare assistance, direct access to the provider and useful tools for discounted prices for pharmaceuticals.

It is important to consistently maintain professional boundaries and maintain a high standard of ethics. This course has allowed me to grow and learn how to be more critical of technology sources and see where possible PHI breaches may occur with the systems in place. Also understanding the FDA regulations and HIT standards that are in place to protect our patients. Having this knowledge a provider is able to ensure ethical standards are being met on a day to day, patient by patient standard.

My informatics competency level has improved markedly compared to my week 2 Pre-TANIC self-assessment results. I have improved my competency in computer skills, information literacy, and informatics skills. For example, I have improved my knowledge in previously weak areas like privacy and security of information in computer systems and maintaining the integrity of information resources, systems, equipment, and facilities. I can now clearly explain the privacy and security of information.

The two competencies that will benefit my future APN role are computer skills and informatics literacy. Computer skills will be crucial since I will be required to use healthcare technology and computer systems to facilitate nursing care and support educational resources for nursing education. The use of information technology has become a vital part of the healthcare industry. It requires healthcare providers, including APNs, to have basic computer knowledge and informatics competencies, to manage and use technology to provide healthcare (Kleib et al., 2021).

On the other hand, informatics literacy will be crucial in my future APN role since I will be expected to use data to improve nursing practice. I recognize that computers only facilitate nursing care, and there are human functions that computers cannot carry out. The informatics knowledge will be beneficial since I will be responsible for making ethical decisions in computing and designing, selecting, implementing, and evaluating systems in health care (Singh & Masango, 2020). The course has increased my understanding of the impact of computerized information management on the APN’s role and the limitations and reliability of computerized patient monitoring systems.

The competencies that I achieved in this course are informatics literacy and information skills. In informatics literacy, I have increased my ability to determine the utility of software applications and can participate in the selection process, design, implementation, and evaluation of systems. Besides, I can transfer my informatics knowledge. I can also search for and access sources to help in ethical and rational decision-making. Furthermore, I can help integrate innovations and up-to-date informatics methods into my APN specialty (Khezri & Abdekhoda, 2019). I have acquired informatics skills like using different programs to develop a simple database. I have learned to use database applications to enter and retrieve data and access shared data sets like clinical log Databases and Minimum Data sets. Furthermore, I have acquired skills in extracting data from clinical data sets.

Upon completing the Post-TANIC Self-Assessment, I feel that my competency level has improved. After taking the week 2 self-assessment I became very cognizant of how I already apply informatics in my day-to-day at my nursing job. I am competent in most of the skills that were listed in the assessment. After completing this Post-TANIC assessment I have more confidence in my informatics abilities. There will always be more to learn, but I am able to easily navigate and understand the current technology related to my nursing work.

For my future role as an APN, I believe the two competencies that I will benefit from in the future will be the QSEN competencies of Evidence-based Practice and Informatics. The QSEN Competency of Evidence-based Practice ensures the nurse can read research and evidence databases and relate them to clinical practice(QSEN, n.d.). Being able to incorporate evidence-based practice to guide my decision-making for patient care plans will be crucial if I want positive health outcomes. Information literacy will help guide my ability to gather evidence-based practice from online databases. I want to properly incorporate the latest evidence-based practices to help my patients achieve optimal outcomes. Evidence-based articles are always emerging and properly understanding that knowledge and incorporating it into my treatment plans will benefit my patients.

The QSEN competency of Informatics involves being able to properly respond to clinical decision-making supports and alerts and monitor outcomes of care processes through information management tools (QSEN, n.d.). Having the ability to understand and use a clinical decision support system(CDSS) will be crucial for future practice. Electronic health records are the standard in many practices along with a CDSS. I intend to use a CDSS to help guide my decisions, for optimal patient care plans, while not being overly reliant on them. These two competencies will help me provide safe and optimal care for my patients.

In this course, I believe the two competencies I achieved were information literacy and clinical information management.  For information literacy, we evaluated an online medical application to understand how this electronic resource can benefit patient care. We appraised the ease of use and the privacy settings of this application to help us as future practitioners to make recommendations for use. For clinical information management competency, we evaluated the pros and cons of a CDSS and its influence on patient care and safety. Understanding that CDSS can have many pros and cons, can help me be aware of how to appropriately incorporate a CDSS into my future practice.

Information technology is constantly evolving and improving. Healthcare is incorporating technology more than ever, and it could potentially increase positive patient outcomes and improve patient safety. Astier et al. (2020) note that technology can improve patient safety with appropriate medication alerts, access to accurate patient data, and improved diagnostic reports, but require staff to be properly trained an educated. Technology can be complicated and could overwhelm many healthcare professionals, properly training staff could be the key to successfully incorporating technology in healthcare. Patient safety is optimal, and properly utilizing technology can achieve the goal of successful patient outcomes across all healthcare settings.

My competency level has gone up drastically since week 2 of the course. The questions in the Post Tanic Self-assessment made much more sense this time and from information learned in the course I realized how easy some of these computer functions where.

Which two competencies do you think may benefit you in your future role as an APN and why?

The utilization of HIT technology’s and information management I believe will have the largest impact on my future role as a APN. Using HIT technologies as we have learned throughout the semester is essential for best practices as a APN, utilizing these integrated technologies will help us communicate patient care across many different practices as well as integrate new improved practice. Information management and how to organize it is essential as well as a future APN. Being able to understand information management can help you easily adopt new systems and processes when they come out.

Two competencies I achieved in this course where learning about the use of HIT technologies as well as knowledge management. Knowledge management focuses on the skills and knowledge needed to analyze clinical scenarios and apply evidence-based practice to the scenarios. I realized throughout the semester that utilizing HIT technologies will help make future practice much easier if we can integrate it and adopt it early on. These technologies where made to make healthcare stronger as a whole and if we can learn to utilize these things well it can help shape us into strong APN.

A: The Post TANIC self-assessment showed that I was competent in the basic use of the computer; the test also showed my competency in inputting, storing, and using data. The test, however, showed that improvement was needed when it came to proper security when working with data.

  • Which two competencies do you think may benefit you in your future role as an APN and why                                            A: One competency that will be of benefit to the PMHNP is clinical information and management competency. With the constantly evolving technological world in the healthcare system, clinical information storage. Use, Interpretation, and management of information are made using data. The APN must be able to access, store, and interpret data to provide safe and meaningful service to the patient. The competency of clinical information management by the APN will also be of great importance to the patient because personal health information access is granted to the patient to make the patient more involved in their care and promote health.

B, Another competency that will be of importance to the APN is cybersecurity. Patient Privacy and security of health information are paramount in healthcare. The APN must be able to detect security breaches or unsafe sites that can breach the security system. Organizations must create security systems to protect patient’s health information and limit the risk of possible security breaches. The APN must work with the organization to promote cybersecurity and prevent health information leaks.

Explain.                                                                                                                                                                               A:  The healthcare competency I achieved in this course is using computer tools and applications to access, store, and interpret data. Several healthcare applications and systems are available to the APN and the patient to provide that needed healthcare using technology. These applications help the APN to pass across health information safely to the patient; EHR makes health care information easily accessible to the APN, which in turn helps in making clinical decisions promptly. Several organizations have a communication system within the organization where providers can communicate effectively and safely. According to Sridharan et al 2021, different organizations put in place different systems to communicate within the structure and the patient. Such systems, also known as microblogging, allow the provider to reach colleagues and access useful information particular to the organization promptly. These microsystems are safe and encrypted to provide security and safety to the patient. The APN must have the ability to access these systems effectively.                                                                                                                                                                                         B: The APN must be able to interpret data and provide the needed security for data to provide the needed care. With technological advancement, today comes the risk of cyberthreat and insecurity. Several breaches have occurred over the years that have cost persons, Organizations, and even countries extremely important data. Threat to the healthcare sector is constantly evolving, making it a challenge to identify and isolate them as the human interface continues to be the weakest link in the security chain. The APN must continue to promote cybersecurity by identification of possible malware and applications that can threaten personal and organizational health information. According to Wilner et al. 2022, threats to the healthcare sector can be in any form, like data manipulation and malware. People or even countries can do data breaches. The APN, as part of the healthcare system, must be equipped to identify possible avenues for breaches and how to handle the situations as they arise following organizational policy.

After taking the pre-TANIC self-assessment during week 2, I felt I was fairly competent in many aspects of informatics. I did not feel I was proficient, and definitely no expert, although I knew that if there was something I did not know, I had the ability to research and figure it out or find a solution. Now, however, after taking the post-TANIC self-assessment this week, week 7, I feel I have become more proficient in many areas.

                The rapid evolution of technology is being incorporated in the ever-evolving healthcare field. Studies have shown numerous positive effects that health information technology has had on healthcare systems (Farzandipour et al., 2020). These positive effects include the use of computer systems facilitating nursing care, and information technology aiding in decreasing time spent documenting and allowing for more time to deliver quality care. Phillips et al. (2019) adds that the Quality and Safety Education for Nurses (QSEN) established informatics competencies for nurses to use information and technology in areas such as communication and knowledge management, as well as to mitigate errors and support clinical decision making. In order to utilize information technology effectively, many competencies in informatics have been established for nurses and other healthcare providers. The Technology Informatics Guiding Education Reform (TIGER) initiative, for example, was established in 2004 in an effort to improve nursing practice, education, and delivery of patient care through the use of information technology (The TIGER Initiative, n.d.). It was through these efforts that the TIGER Informatics Competency Collaborative (TICC) was formed to develop competency recommendations that all nurses should possess in order to provide safe, quality, competent care. The TIGER competencies model consists of three parts: basic computer competencies; information literacy, which is the ability to recognize when information is needed and how to locate, evaluate, and use the information appropriately; and information management, which consists of collecting and processing data, and presenting and communicating that data as information or knowledge. The TIGER Initiative contains a complete list of specific competencies that are recommended. Based on these competencies, I am proficient in basic computer competencies, and I now feel more proficient in many areas of information literacy and management.

                Information literacy and information management are two competencies that are vital in the healthcare field. Abdekhoda and Khezri (2021) describe information literacy as the basis for critical thinking and required to implement evidence-based care, in order to provide high quality care and improve outcomes. AHIMA defines health information management as “the practice of acquiring, analyzing, and protecting digital and traditional medical information vital to providing quality patient care”. According to the TIGER initiative, nurses manage information in many ways but mainly through information systems such as electronic health records (EHRs). I feel these two competencies are useful to an APN for the purpose of researching, identifying, and implementing the most up-to-date, evidence-based care, as well as thoroughly documenting, tracking, and appropriately sharing information that will aid in high quality care and possibly assist in future care provided.

                Technology has heavily impacted healthcare over the years. According to, digital technology has become an integral part of healthcare, has greatly improved operational efficiency, and has significantly enhanced patient and provider experience. Some of the areas listed that were impacted include: improved access to medical information; improved lines of communication; electronic health records; telemedicine and telehealth; online education; big data; and health apps. This is just a portion of how technology has impacted healthcare to this point in time. With technology rapidly evolving, I feel it will continue to play a major role in healthcare and continue to have a positive impact on how care is delivered. It is important for healthcare professionals to remain diligent in healthcare and technological advances in order to ensure the best treatment options are being provided through high quality care.
