NR 500 has been an excellent introductory course on the path towards a master’s of science in nursing degree. By taking time to review scholarly literature and formulate my own opinions through deeper thinking and review of proven research, I have developed an excitement for the future of my nursing practice and the profession I share with each of you. While there is much work yet to be done, the foundation laid in this course will help bridge the new concepts that will be learned in future courses and ultimately my role in advanced practice nursing. Graduate nursing education plays a key role in health care reform and transformation. Use of evidence-based practice, informatics, patient driven, and patient centered care is the core of an MSN education (Finkelman, 2012.) It is the utilization of these acquired skills and knowledge after the MSN is attained that truly displays its value while bringing about positive change to healthcare.
As I approach my practicum project, I will utilize the knowledge of translating scholarship into practice through evidence-based practice to recognize, perform, and measure an outcome that will improve nursing practice and correlate with my chosen specialty track of nurse education. One example might be to further resolve the practice problems associated with surgical site infections by advancing nurse education to prevent these infections through scholarly literature and proven preventative outcomes. Based on American Association of Colleges of Nursing’s (AACN) Essential IV of Master’s Education for Advanced Practice Nursing, graduate nurses must have the necessary skills to bring evidence-based practice forward to improve the care decisions, apply research to practice, resolve problems, and work as change agents for improvement in nursing practice (AACN, 2011).
As I look towards my future nursing practice as a nurse educator, I desire to bring the concepts learned in this course and translate them into real practice. Promoting holistic caring provided through collaborative, interdisciplinary teamwork will be a focus of mine. Utilization of resources through modern informatics systems and continued review of scholarly literature will be resources I use to assist novice nurses in their paths towards knowledge. I would also like to role model civil behavior and educate others in the nursing profession on the dangers of incivility in the work and academic settings. There is much to discover on this path towards advanced practice, however the groundwork has been laid in this course. Utilization of the concepts and essentials learned will aid in my future nursing endeavors.

I envision using the information I learned in this course along with the AACN essentials key to identify, guide, and evaluate my practicum project essential for a successful outcome. From my perspective, the most essential professional competency for a master’s prepared nurse in the 21st century is to “Provide high quality, safe, patient-centered care grounded in holistic health principles. (CCN 2016). It is the RN who is training to set the standard. As licensed professionals we must be as proficient as we can be in nursing skills training to instill in others the correct policies or guidelines to follow consistently to provide the highest quality of care possible. This fluency or proficiency can only be achieved through further education. The MSN is the groundwork to enable us to perform in these leadership roles.
As we read through the ANA scope and standards it is made clear that graduate level nurses must have additional criteria to meet to be considered advanced. Each of these competencies and standards emphasize particularly areas of proficiency that are needed for leadership roles.\
- How do you envision using the concepts learned in this course in your future nursing practice?
In my future nursing practice, I feel responsible to highlight on the importance of nursing participation regarding making decisions and changing or enforcing policies. Staff participation empowers staff. When people are heard they feel empowered, and when people feel empowered people take ownership of their actions and expect more from themselves and peers working around them.
In my future nursing practice, I will also be supportive of furthering education and advocating for nursing school curriculums to address the importance of incivility and diverse ways or approaches on how to handle these situations. The expectation should start at nursing school.
I have learned that to provide a healthier working environment in my future nursing practice that as a leader I am also responsible to provide for leadership and all nursing staff further workshops on communication and techniques we can learn to better support each other and relay to each other ideas that although may be different at times we can come together to negotiate a happy medium. Administrators must be taking on active role. (Coursey 2013)

You touched on a lot of interesting points that define the expectance of the leadership qualities of a mastered prepared nurse. Some of the qualities you pointed out was the ability to provide holistic care, creating an environment of civility, advocating advancement in nursing education, empowerment of nurses through education, and scholarship. All these qualities you address are important components to building a competent mastered-prepared nurse who can take on the skill set and leadership ability to provide high quality, safe, patient-centered care grounded on holistic health principles. As students of Chamberlain College, we learned in our first class the importance of delivering unbiased care, the art of caring using the Watson theory as a guide, providing holistic care, evidence-based care delivery, scholarship, and how incivility impacts nurses, the organization & patient outcomes. The lessons learned in this class gave us a beginning guide to excellent advancement in nursing practice, accountability, and leadership that falls within AACN’s outline of what is expected in advance nursing education and practice. The AACN recognizes how important creative problem-solving is to superior nursing care; creative problem solving, and critical care thinking abilities need to work together for best practice outcomes (Duhamel, 2016). As we explore and reflect on the lessons learned in this course our problem-solving and critical thinking abilities through all lessons explored sharpen ways improving practice as an advanced-practice nurse.

l will use the AACN essentials and information learned by application of evidence based practices, use quality improvement methods, outcomes measurement, systems knowledge, and leadership skills in my practicum. If I obtain the competencies outlined in these Master’s Essentials, i will possess the advanced knowledge in the discipline and leadership skills needed to improve health outcomes in a number of current and emerging roles. I envision using the concepts learned in this course in your future nursing practice. Ensure accountability for quality care and patient safety for diverse populations. Utilize technological information systems to evaluate outcomes of care, healthcare delivery, and quality improvement. Work collaboratively with interdisciplinary teams to meet complex healthcare needs of diverse individuals and populations. I have also learned much about my specialty tract and what it is involved and my role as an FNP. That nurses who acquire more nursing degree are more likely to improve in clinical judgments, better ability to make decisions, challenge poor practice with good leadership skills with advancement in clinical practice role. (Clark, Casey, & Morris, 2015). What it means to care, Caring is influenced by the nurse’s knowledge, skills, and attitudes formed through lifelong learning and experiences. I have also learned how to be self-aware in other to recognize when I am showing bias and how to handle and prevent it from happening again. I have learned what it takes to be a good leader and the qualities of a good leader. I have learned so much of evidence based. The importance of evidence-based practice in nursing practice, the use of PICO, and how to search for evidence-based practice topics. The second life scavenger hunt was very interactive. I did learn a lot on incivility, how it affects individuals, workplace, and the effect in nursing practice. I have improved on formatting APA paper.

I envisioned using the AACN essentials and information learned in this course to identify a clinical issue to improve clinical practice through evidence-based nursing research and science. AACN essentials are great foundational tools to explore and guide a practicum project and evaluate its effectiveness. The theoretical and conceptual framework in nursing will improve my health literacy and interpersonal communication skills. Creech et al., (2017) suggested that a graduate nursing education program must incorporate a rich cultural competence for health care and global demand of the 21st century. The AACN is an excellent template to guide our practicum project so we can navigate and improve our changing healthcare system. The Essentials will enable graduates to change clinical practice and enrich the culture of nursing through innovation and creativity. Moreover, the information learned in this course help me identify problems in the clinical area through nursing research and to build on conceptual nursing principles to achieve quality measurable outcomes. As I continue to the next course, the information obtained will future my professional growth and continue to achieve positive patient outcomes through evidence-based nursing practice. Hayat (2014) suggested the need for more statistic education throughout the graduate nursing curriculum. Furthermore, recent studies suggest the need to incorporate statistical literacy and essential to understanding published research (Hayat, 2014).
How do you envision the concepts learned in this course in your future nursing practice?
The concepts learned in this course will build and prepare me to meet nursing competencies and master nursing theories, nursing research, and excel in clinical practice. Moreover, this foundational class allowed me to understand nursing principles in a holistic context. Furthermore, the creative learning through posting and virtual learning allow me to think and solve solutions in a practical manner. The explosion of nursing concepts learned in this course will prepare me to test and discover new ground and build on AACN essentials. These concepts learned has increased my professional development skills and broaden my foundational inquiry in nursing practice.
