The methodology is essentially the section of your research paper that explains what you researched, how you researched it, and what tools were used to analyze the data (McCombes, 2020). It is a very important section to have as it allows your readers to draw conclusions on the reliability and validity of your findings (McCombes, 2020). My research problem is identifying whether people that have access to reliable information about health inspection results and food recalls will be able to make better-informed decisions that reduces the risk of being exposed to a foodborne illness compared to those that do not. Much of the research I obtained doing my literature reviews contained quantitative research via the use of surveys. It was about 7 observational studies, 10 experimental designs, 1 meta-analysis, 2 cross-sectional, 1 quasi-experimental, 1 qualitative research study, and 2 correlational studies. The methodology is essentially how was the question that was posed, best answered (Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2019).
My research question is best to be studied a quantitative approach through observational studies and questionnaires. The data that I required was how consumers react to health inspection results if they are willing to use them, and how they understand them. Coupled with does having such information available to the public facilitate decreasing the rates of foodborne illness when compared to its baseline of not presenting the information. Quantitative methods such as through surveys are really great at “measuring, ranking, categorizing, identifying patterns and making generalizations” (McCombes, 2020, para.2). It is also important that my methodology be quantitative in nature because I am making comparisons with before the application of health inspection results to after and its effects that it exerts on foodborne illness rates.
So, I would be observing how many people would use such an app (database) and the information that is presented to their decision-making about where to go to eat and why. Then I would observe how over time the restaurants adjusted their food safety standards to stay competitive with consumers frequenting their establishments. As evidenced by their improving health inspection result scores. This would be thoroughly analyzed with data being provided by the state’s health department. One of the best ways for researchers to understand how people act under specific circumstances the best way to get this information is to simply observe them under said circumstances (SkillsYouNeed, 2011). I would then submit questionnaires to the public in a format that they would be paid for their participation. To elicit their thoughts and feelings on using such a service and how it influenced their decision making.

The introduction of hourly nursing rounds and call lights at some of the rooms at the unit will then occur. After the introduction of the two interventions, The Tracking Record for Improving Patient Safety will be used to track the rates of patient falls for each intervention (AHRQ, n.d). The collected data will then undergo a statistical analysis using SPSS package. The comparison of the two data sets vis-à-vis the initial fall rates will reveal the more effective approach to reducing patient falls in the medical-surgical unit at the facility.

It is important for any clinician utilizing evidenced-based research (EBR) to understand what type of research is appropriate for investigating a problem. Mackey & Gass (2016) explain research methodology as the theoretical conceptualization behind why a particular method is used to explore a research question. This appears to be just as important as the actual method of research used. The methodology would support why qualitative, quantitative, or a mixed method is chosen to explore or support the research question.
The methodology I have chosen to support my EBP project is quantitative methodology, specifically the use of randomized controlled trial (RCT) and systematic review methodologies. RCT methodology supports research questions that involve interventions because it provides clarity around the efficacy and effectiveness of them through focus on cause and effect (Melnyk & Fineout-Overhold, 2019). My research question explores an intervention involving a treatment alternative for pain control in patients undergoing total knee arthroplasty. Through literature review, three RCTs and five systematic reviews have been found in relation to all the components in my research question and appear to be appropriate research for it. The systematic review methodology aims to “summarize, appraise, and communicate the results and implications of several studies that may have contradictory results” (Melnyk & Fineout-Overhold, p. 171). Since this population is well-studied with multiple interventions in addition to the one under question, the abundance of research supports the use of systematic reviews as an appropriate, ideal methodology for providing any firm conclusions. Overall, the methodology seems to be a guide to what kind of research is needed and understanding the different kinds is probably a good first step once the research question is determined.
