When caring for families where genetic risk has been identified, a family health nurse has two major responsibilities. They entail assisting families in understanding the risk and assisting family members in making the best decisions for their specific circumstances, beliefs, and culture (Kaakinen et al., 2018). The family nurse should educate the family and encourage members who may be required to undergo regular screening to do so (Wright et al., 2018). Furthermore, because the discovery of genetic risk is considered bad news, the nurse should offer support to the family.
The nurse should undertake a risk assessment that entails obtaining a genetic family history, including drawing a genogram that collects essential information about the family structure and relationships (Kaakinen et al., 2018). In addition to genetic assessment, the nurse should provide preconception education and counseling to the couple. Preconception counseling involves providing information and support to a couple before conception to reduce health risks and promote health. It entails developing a health risk profile that consists of family history, ethnic background, specific genetic disorders, poor lifestyle habits, prescribed treatments, and occupational or household exposures.
In this case, I would obtain a comprehensive health history of the family, including the couple, their immediate family members, clients’ maternal and paternal side of the family, and relatives who have died and the cause of death

(Wright et al., 2018). I would then conduct a genetic nursing assessment that would consist of a three-generation pedigree, family health history, reproductive history, and ethnicity of the clients. It would also include variations in the growth and development of members in the family, and their understanding of causes of health conditions that have occurred in more than one of their family members (Kaakinen et al., 2018). In addition, I would undertake the couple through preconception education and develop a health risk profile based on the clients’ personal history. I would also educate them on the benefits of taking folic acid and vitamin B supplements to help lower the incidence of neural tube defects (Kaakinen et al., 2018). After identifying the factors that may put their babies at a health risk, Lastly, I would enquire if they want a further consultation with a genetic specialist who would guide them on childbearing options.

With the increase in knowledge around genetic issues, it is important that all health care providers are prepared to have thorough genetic-based discussions now with their patients. In this assignment, you will synthesize your knowledge into a client case with a real or potential genetic health-related illness.
General Guidelines:
Use the following information to ensure successful completion of the assignment:
- This assignment uses a rubric. Please review the rubric prior to beginning the assignment to become familiar with the expectations for successful completion.

Directions:
Write a paper (1,000-1,250 words) addressing a client case that might benefit from the process of genetic counseling. Describe the reason for the genetic counseling based on the findings from your completion of the family health portrait. Discuss the possible reactions the patient may have to your counseling and how to avoid negative reactions.
Imagine this assignment as if you are giving this counseling to a patient. Discuss the following:
- Health
- Prevention
- Screening
- Diagnostics
- Prognostics
