DNP 805- Topic 2 Emerging Technologies

From the electronic health record (EHR) to nanotechnology to 3-D printers and beyond, there are an increasing number of useful and innovative technologies being used in health care settings that have an important role in linking and organizing care and information. For this assignment, you will create a slide presentation to present to administrators and nurses providing direct patient care.

Topic 2 DQ 1

Discuss the usefulness of the electronic health record (EHR) and its impact on patient safety and quality outcomes. Describe strengths and limitations that might apply to its usage

Electronic health records (EHRs) are rapidly becoming the standard for medical records all over the country, and patients and nurses equally stand to benefit from this technology.

EHR permits physicians, nurses, pharmacists, other healthcare providers, and patients to aptly access and securely share a patient’s essential medical information electronically.

(EHR) is an electronic version of the patients’ information. It is suitable for recording the patients’ medical history, which is kept by the provider over time. The EHR comprises all the key organizational clinical data appropriate to that patient care under a specific provider. The EHR encompasses the patients” demographics, progress notes, problems, medications, vital signs, past medical history, immunizations, laboratory data, and radiology reports (CMS.Gov,2021).

Advantages

1.     Legibility. Traditionally, illegible handwriting has been a chief cause of medication errors. In one source, more than 60% of medication errors in hospitals were due to bad penmanship.

2.

Handling medications through an EHR enhances

patient outcomes over time. EHRs lessen adverse drug events by 52%. Some are

designed to incorporate bar code scanning technology. If a nurse scans the incorrect

medication, an alert pops up notifying him or her of a problem.

3.     Results are available on time. Critical lab values must be available to the healthcare provider on time. The EHR flags each critical value for clinical staff, making notifications easier for nurses. The EHR also assists clinicians to decide when to repeat a lab test

4.

EHR

improves treatment and clinical outcomes by lowering the number of duplicates

tests and advancing overall efficacy.

5.     EHR stores radiology results, which can be retrieved from within the application if clinicians need to examine the actual X-ray or the report from the radiologist.

6.      All reports are available to all clinicians engaged in the patient’s healthcare and can be viewed at any time.

7.     EHR improves accountability with audit trails and security that detail who has accessed the medical records and when, and what the individuals did while accessing each record.

8.     EHR keeps information safe from anyone who does not have permission to see patient data.

9.     EHRs help patients and clinicians with medication reconciliation. A medication list compiled from the EHR can be easily retrieved and updated at each patient visit. This makes maintaining a current medication list relatively easy for patients and providers.

10. Patients have access to their own EHRs through patient portals and can read, print, and send their health information to providers. This empowers patients to be their own advocates(Hoover, 2017).

Limitations

Computer skills lacking, high cost, security concerns, workflow issues, and time consumption are some of the limitations. For instance, staff should be trained in advance of implementation and provided with continuous support after the EHR is in place. slow internet, the computer becomes slow, and freezes are some major drawback that affects the workflow and indirectly or directly affects the patient’s care.

It is costly to train the staff and to have adequate nurses at the bedside simultaneously. Nurses believe that using the EHR is time-consuming and takes time away from their patients. Their work was not distributed equally across a 12-hour shift (Yen et al 2018).

DNP 805- Topic 2 Emerging Technologies

Directions:

Your presentation must include the following elements:

  1. Identify and provide a brief description of a clinical problem.
  2. Identify a technology that can improve patient outcomes for that clinical problem.
  3. Select a theory to guide the presentation and discuss why this theory is applicable.
  4. Address how the technology you have identified will assist in resolving the clinical problem.
  5. Potential strengths and limitations of the technology selected.

Use PowerPoint to create your slide presentation. Your slide presentation must contain a title slide, 12-15 slides of content, and a References slide. Use evidence to support your claims. A minimum of five references using APA style must be used. Speaker’s notes must be included for each individual slide (add a speaker notes section to demonstrate the verbal speech you would give along with each slide).

Presentation Tips:

Text slides are not meant to be read by the speaker, but by the audience. Lettering should generally be limited to four lines and should never be more than seven, including the title.

  1. It is advisable not to use more than eight words per line.
  2. Avoid too much detail and resist the temptation to overload the presentation with information.
  3. Avoid jargon and abbreviations, unless they are clear to all the audience.
  4. Aim at the average person in the audience.
  5. Use plain English.

Portfolio Practice Hours:

It may be possible to earn portfolio practice hours for this case report. Enter the following after the references section of your paper:

Layout

Layout

0 points

The layout is cluttered, confusing, and does not use spacing, headings, and subheadings to enhance the readability.
