Writing in general is something I truly enjoy doing but writing a fiction essay and demonstrating scholarly writing skills tends to differ quite surprisingly. That is the focus of scholarly writing deems from research upon research of appropriate material that is peer-reviewed and within the scope of study of the research that you are testing in your paper (Irvin, 2019). It is important to have several scholarly sources that are present in the past five years that share a common relationship with the reader, your research needs to reflect your theory so the readers can be on board with your idea that lead for improvement in your present material. Writing a scholarly paper has many steps to follow in developing a well written paper for your research it has to have the right balance of a literature review, testing of your theory, a development into what you want the reader to obtain, learning to write in your own words what you gain from your review of the research way so that you are not plagiarizing in any form and you must be sure to cite all the material correctly to give credit where credit is due (Walden University, 2021).
I think the hardest part for me with writing a scholarly paper is finding the right research that is appropriate for my theory, I have not ever had a hard time with wiring in my own words, but it is the concerned that the material for the literature review is not the right choice or right research. So, it will be one of the areas I will need to real focus on to be successful. As far as citing material in APA format it does worry me some as again it has been quite some time since I wrote a scholarly research paper. I could write a prescription with my eyes closed but this is quite a bit different. So, the truth is I will need to really buckle down a get myself familiar with the library and some of the amazing resources that are at our fingertips. I cannot wait to get started on the literature review.

My struggles align very closely with yours. Even though I have been using APA through several programs, it is always a struggle. PERRLA is an add-on program for Microsoft Word that has been a lifesaver. It holds all my references and will even search for the article information, so you do not have to enter it then place it in the correct APA format. PERRLA even does the entire paper set up, so margins, headings, and title page are all following the APA version needed. It has been a massive help with formatting.
Finding the proper research is also a big concern for me. Making lists can be helpful when identifying what you are looking for. Lists that include specific terms to search and then add other words to broaden the search. Tags are also attached to many articles and can help guide you to different sources. (University of Louisville Writing Center, n.d.) These have both helped me in the past find articles that I otherwise would not have found. It’s amazing what you can find in the references of another article. And don’t forget, you can always call the library at GCU for assistance. They are a great help when you need them.

Scholarly writing uses a topic or a problem that demonstrate a good research based on fact and evidence that requires critical thinking includes analysis and evaluation. It is the type of writing that graduate -level professional uses in their courses. With nursing students in the DNP/PhD programs, the students are required to communicate in a scholarly manner which is referred to critical communication which is beyond critical thinking (Edmunds, & Waldrop, 2018). As expected it should have a clear and concise written communication style. Academic writing is produced as part of academic work which includes reports that are empirical fieldwork. It includes citation of resources using bibliography or references that are focused on an issue. Scholarly writing should include clear introduction, sufficient overview, supporting documentation such as evidence-based and should have a conclusion. Scholar writer uses clarity, does not use bias articles and with relevant supporting materials.

As a DNP learner, I encountered some challenges that may affect my writing but I do hope that I will overcome it. There are times that I find myself having a hard time using scholarly writing and I think it is because I haven’t been in school for a long time and not familiar with different types of writing. Utilizing correct grammar is also one issue that I encounter from time to time. It is difficult for me to form a sentence or a paragraph expressing my thoughts. Not properly using our library can potentially be a challenge for me because I still have a hard time navigating journals, articles and other resources. To be an effective DNP learner I will ask for help if I need it and on how to use the library correctly. I realized using the APA 7th edition style is helpful and guided me on how to write my paper correctly. I will spend more time learning our GCU library resources, DC Network and other sites that can help me as a DNP learner.

Scholarly writing is also referred to academic writing and it is a different type of writing that is used by academics (Walden University, 2021). It is a writing that requires the writer to study the researched article sources and write about those topics without plagiarizing those authors but to reference their work as we write. It also encourages the writer to produce their original thoughts on the subject either through primary research or synthesis of other researches (Walden University, 2021). Scholarly writing can be intimidating and stressful to most students because they are not familiar with this type of writing but it is a skill that needs to be acquired by learning it, studying the steps and practicing them (Walden University, 2021). It is a form of writing that is required for students of higher education levels especially with graduate and doctoral level students. With nursing students in the DNP/PhD programs, the students are required to communicate in a scholarly manner which is referred to critical communication which is beyond critical thinking (Edmunds, & Waldrop, 2018). This involves the choice of words, tone and objectivity and using the evidence effectively (Walden University, 2021).
As a matter of fact, all the three areas of writing are very challenging to me. One of my difficulties is that I did not get any formal training for scholarly writing which I presume other students did not as well but what we got during school and sometimes we did not grasp the information well. One of my difficulties is finding extra time to settle down and learn the steps of scholarly writing but my strategy will be to find the time to read and study the steps as well as practice them. Also, I will try to find someone who can teach me if possible. I will also be using the GCU sites and tools such as the library and the student success center provided as well as the DNP cites like the DC network and Dr. Fetter’s video post on APA 7th ed. I will

Students encounter many challenges with scholarly writing. The most challenging for me is writing in APA style. According to Ciarocco and Strohmetz (2021), although many resources are available, students have a difficult time adapting to the APA style because there usually is no formal class or training for it. One of the main challenges I have with APA style is citations. I often lose points from assignments because of the wrong capitalization, missed commas or periods, or placing the information in the incorrect order. Aside from citations, I often make mistakes on the actual format of the paper: Margins, indentations, and headers. There are many technicalities to the APA style that students can easily miss (Ciarocco & Strohmetz, 2021).
Prior to starting the program, I purchased the APA Manual and reviewed the basic APA format. I felt the need to because it has been a while since I utilized the APA writing style. With this, I also learned that the APA style can be incorporated into Microsoft Word. I plan to utilize this resource to ensure I meet all the requirements for an APA-style paper. Grand Canyon University also offers multiple resources for APA style in the DC Network such as guides and forums. In addition to the mentioned resources, I also found the Purdue Online Writing Lab to be helpful as it has a designated website for APA formatting.

Scholarly writing is a form of communicationand a necessary skill that is important to the nurse’s role as a clinician, professional, leader, scholar, educator, and advocate. As a DNP student, developing skills in scholarly writing will help prepare me for my nursing role. One of my assumptions of scholarly writing is using creative ways of writing to affect the reader in a way a regular sentence would not be able, Scholarly writing is written with a purpose and audience in mind as well, but there is one great distinction; Scholarly writing must include evidence. Other aspects of writing in nursing include correct grammar, spelling, and organized paragraphs. “The use of grammar and spelling checks can be a great check of writing. Word processors, such as the Word program have the ability to custom set the grammar checks at a higher level” (APA, 2022). In nursing, scholarly writing is different from other disciplines in that nurses engage in many forms of scholarly writing, I should incorporate evidence to support statements. It is important to draw from scholarly sources, such as peer-reviewed journals, as opposed to magazines or books which need to be clear, precise, and concise. Scholarly writing allows one to develop a capacity as a communicator, a skill that transcends domains of professional and personal life. Scholarly writing provides information for future health care workers to access in the provision of care. Published scholarly writing allows a medium of ideas, evidence, knowledge, and experiences to share with others in nursing.

Scholarly writing is an essential skill for a doctoral student. Writing should be concise, accurate, thought-provoking and academic in nature. Scholarly writing should be grounded with facts or research based and should be void of opinions (Tornwall & McDaniel, 2022). Properly citing authors and ideas is a cornerstone as plagiarism should be avoided. Additionally, providing and receiving feedback aids in academic writing, essential for Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) students (Tornwall & McDaniel, 2022).
A challenge I face in scholarly writing relates to citations. I tend to over-cite materials and references. Even at this level, I am still citing many sources, especially in larger papers. I do not want to inadvertently commit plagiarism, so I error on the side of caution. However, if the paper is large with a multitude of references, I fear missing a citation. Another challenge is proofreading prior to submitting papers and assignments. Often, this is due to time constraints which also means I do not tend to follow a writing process. Recommendation is to write and proofread and revise (Johnson & Rulo, 2019). Lastly, writing concisely can be challenging, especially if the assignment has word requirements. Also, I tend to become more loquacious if I am passionate about a certain topic making my assignment less succinct.
Grand Canyon University has a multitude of resources available to assist in scholarly writing. I appreciate Lopeswrite submissions to review for possible plagiarism. There are several tutorials available from GCU on the most current edition of APA formatting. This is extremely helpful has it has recently changed. The Student Success Center providers a Writing Center with tutorials I found beneficial. Johnson and Rulo (2019) offered a few suggestions that I found helpful and improve my writing style: prewriting, devise the rough draft and then spend more time on feedback and revisions. This is not my current process. If I follow these steps, I would budget time to step away and be more productive when I return, helping to make my writing more scholarly and concise.
