Question Description
Discussion #1
Human Resource Management
Here is the recommended approach to take for each article:
Read the introduction and conclusion.
Scan the article for major headings.
Identify the three or four major or main points for each article.
Identify any sources of evidence or support.
Seek connections between the articles in terms of HRM current state, future state, and specific application.
There are two (2) peer reviewed articles you need to read for this discussion.
Swart, J., & Kinnie, N. (2014). Reconsidering boundaries: Human resource management in a networked world. Human Resource Management, 53(2), 291–310.
Human resource management. (2014). Human Resource Management, 53(6), 1–16.
This article is a compilation of select abstracts of what is currently trending in HR. Not in itself an article.
Use this as resource to select a trend you find of interest.
Then search for a peer-reviewed article focused within your selected trend—this then becomes your second article that you will read and use in the discussion.
The last point, you have latitude for the case analysis—you can rely on an anecdotal description applying what you have read within your own organization or experience. Or you can seek a case study within the literature to apply what you have read.
In summary, read the Swart and Kinnie (2014) article and find another article based on a trend you select from Human Resource Management (2014). Apply MEAL to these two articles. Then do a case analysis of the trends just described based on your own experience (opinion or personal observation is permitted, please be specific) or research an application to a case study company.
Use APA headings to format your initial discussion post. Use the APA Module, linked in the Resources, to guide your formatting. Use the following list to develop your post and include the information you gather under its corresponding heading:
Introduction: Tell the reader the purpose of the post and what will be covered.
Theory: Article Comparisons: Identify and describe the main points of the three articles.
Case Example: Demonstrate an application.
Conclusion: What are the key takeaways?
Your post to this discussion must include at least two cited scholarly references, either peer-reviewed journal or practitioner journal, in addition to the course assigned readings, and must be a minimum of 300 words in length. Remember to list your references in APA format at the end of your post. To allow other learners time to respond, you are encouraged to post your initial responses in the discussion area by 11:59 p.m. central standard time Thursday.
Response Guidelines
Read all posts and respond to at least two other learners. Your responses must be at least 50 words in length and strive to extend the dialogue and analyses with related content.

DBA RESOURCES & TEMPLATES TOOLBOX
SCHOLARLY JOURNALS
What is it?
An academic publication produced by authoritative experts in a field. Often includes original research published for the first time. Scholarly journals are frequently:
Peer reviewed by subject experts to ensure quality. Peer review is a process where an article goes through critical evaluation by subject experts (usually peer faculty members). The article is evaluated on its research methodology, literature review, discussion, results and conclusions before it is published.
Evidence based with long reference lists.
Based in the language of the discipline.
When do I use it?
Use scholarly journals to:
Examine a specific topic in-depth.
Find examples of applied theories and strategies.
Provide helpful background or historical information on a topic, discipline or phenomenon.
Where do I find it?
Scholarly journals are located in:
Capella Library databases.
The most important data bases for your DBA business research are found in the library and here the links are provided:
Academic Search Premier.
Business Source Complete.
IBIS World.
LexisNexis Academic.
Tip: If you know of a particular journal in your field, use the Journal and Book Locator to see if it’s available in the Capella Library. Also, conference papers may provide you with other credible materials to support your research. These may or may not be peer reviewed.
TRADE PUBLICATIONS
What is it?
News magazines with cutting edge and up-to-date information about current issues for a particular industry or occupation. Trade publications may:
Contain fewer references than scholarly articles.
Offer real-world case studies.
Not necessarily demonstrate thorough research on a topic (depending on how the information was gathered).
When do I use it?
Use trade publications to:
Get up to speed with current developments in a field.
Analyze trends in an industry or occupation.
See what competitors are doing.
See a strategic view of an industry as a whole.
Where do I find it?
Trade publications are located:
Download this Index of Research Sources for information on publications, websites, and businesses that are appropriate to use in the DBA courses.
In the Capella Library databases.
At their own website which may charge money to access.
NOTE: Don’t pay for articles. Check the Capella Library first or use the Interlibrary Loan service.
Tip: If you know of a particular trade publication in your field, use the Journal and Book Locator to see if it’s available in the Capella Library.
INDUSTRY & COMPANY PROFILES
What is it?
A variety of information about industries and companies including financials, competitors, executives, and proxy statements. The profiles include:
Centralized and standardized information for public companies.
Scattered information about small and private companies.
NAICS codes are assigned to different industry segments for government data and reporting purposes. The North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) replaced the Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) system in 1997. NAICS codes can be used to search Library databases by Industry.
When do I use it?
Use industry and company profiles to:
Complete initial analysis of a company.
Locate information for competitive and financial analyses.
Identify key trends in an industry.
Gain a better understanding of the “look and feel” of an industry.
Where do I find it?
Industry and company profiles are located in:
Business Source Complete guide. In Business Source Complete, company profiles can be found under “More” on the top navigation bar.
LexisNexis Academic guide
IBIS World guide
Fortune USA 500
Fortune Global 500

SUCCESS FACTORS
Success in the DBA program requires a combination of determination, experience, and disciplined scholarly investigation. The resources provided here can help set you on the path to success by guiding you through the expectations of the Capella DBA program, and explaining how to meet those expectations.
In Capella courses you are asked to do things like analyze, evaluate, and synthesize. This Bloom’s Taxonomy presentation explains what those terms mean, and how you can successfully accomplish each.
Download this Secrets of Learner Success Pt. 1 presentation. It walks you through the specifics of posting discussions, grading, and researching and writing in DBA courses.
Download this Secrets of Learner Success Pt. 2 presentation. It goes deeper into the structure of a DBA paper, as well as applying critical thinking and ensuring academic integrity.
Discussion #8
Operations
Preparation
Select a Fortune 500 or Global 500 company and use the toolbox links, MarketLine, Nexis Uni, IBISWorld, and the Annual Report to research the company’s profile, read financial reports, gain insight to the company’s competitive landscape with the focus Operations.
Discussion
For the Fortune 500 or Global 500 company that you chose (different from Units 2–7), analyze selected aspects of key resource elements of the Business Model Canvas to assess the operational performance of that company.
As with Units 2 through 7, please begin by de-constructing the assigned readings. Then the applications begin for the case study application, evaluating many of the same types of reports you used Unit 7, now taking an operational perspective.
The critical parts of the Business Model Canvas you now assess for the selected Fortune 500 company include:
Key Activities.
What are the critical activities the company does? For example, Apple, Inc. never outsources product and software design.
Key Partners.
Who are the company’s key partners and suppliers?
What is needed from them?
What key activities do they perform? For example, how important is Foxconn to Apple, Inc. in making products?
Operational Metrics.
How does your selected company measure success?
Headings
And as we hit Unit 8, now it is your turn to select your heading structure.

ORDER NOW FOR AN ORIGINAL PAPER ASSIGNMENT: Capella University Human Resource Management Discussions
You must proofread your paper. But do not strictly rely on your computer’s spell-checker and grammar-checker; failure to do so indicates a lack of effort on your part and you can expect your grade to suffer accordingly. Papers with numerous misspelled words and grammatical mistakes will be penalized. Read over your paper – in silence and then aloud – before handing it in and make corrections as necessary. Often it is advantageous to have a friend proofread your paper for obvious errors. Handwritten corrections are preferable to uncorrected mistakes.
Use a standard 10 to 12 point (10 to 12 characters per inch) typeface. Smaller or compressed type and papers with small margins or single-spacing are hard to read. It is better to let your essay run over the recommended number of pages than to try to compress it into fewer pages.
Likewise, large type, large margins, large indentations, triple-spacing, increased leading (space between lines), increased kerning (space between letters), and any other such attempts at “padding” to increase the length of a paper are unacceptable, wasteful of trees, and will not fool your professor.
The paper must be neatly formatted, double-spaced with a one-inch margin on the top, bottom, and sides of each page. When submitting hard copy, be sure to use white paper and print out using dark ink. If it is hard to read your essay, it will also be hard to follow your argument.
ADDITIONAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE CLASS
Discussion Questions (DQ)
Initial responses to the DQ should address all components of the questions asked, include a minimum of one scholarly source, and be at least 250 words.
Successful responses are substantive (i.e., add something new to the discussion, engage others in the discussion, well-developed idea) and include at least one scholarly source.
One or two sentence responses, simple statements of agreement or “good post,” and responses that are off-topic will not count as substantive. Substantive responses should be at least 150 words.
I encourage you to incorporate the readings from the week (as applicable) into your responses.
Weekly Participation
Your initial responses to the mandatory DQ do not count toward participation and are graded separately.
In addition to the DQ responses, you must post at least one reply to peers (or me) on three separate days, for a total of three replies.
Participation posts do not require a scholarly source/citation (unless you cite someone else’s work).
Part of your weekly participation includes viewing the weekly announcement and attesting to watching it in the comments. These announcements are made to ensure you understand everything that is due during the week.
APA Format and Writing Quality
Familiarize yourself with APA format and practice using it correctly. It is used for most writing assignments for your degree. Visit the Writing Center in the Student Success Center, under the Resources tab in LoudCloud for APA paper templates, citation examples, tips, etc. Points will be deducted for poor use of APA format or absence of APA format (if required).
Cite all sources of information! When in doubt, cite the source. Paraphrasing also requires a citation.
I highly recommend using the APA Publication Manual, 6th edition.
Use of Direct Quotes
I discourage overutilization of direct quotes in DQs and assignments at the Masters’ level and deduct points accordingly.
As Masters’ level students, it is important that you be able to critically analyze and interpret information from journal articles and other resources. Simply restating someone else’s words does not demonstrate an understanding of the content or critical analysis of the content.
It is best to paraphrase content and cite your source.
LopesWrite Policy
For assignments that need to be submitted to LopesWrite, please be sure you have received your report and Similarity Index (SI) percentage BEFORE you do a “final submit” to me.
Once you have received your report, please review it. This report will show you grammatical, punctuation, and spelling errors that can easily be fixed. Take the extra few minutes to review instead of getting counted off for these mistakes.
Review your similarities. Did you forget to cite something? Did you not paraphrase well enough? Is your paper made up of someone else’s thoughts more than your own?
Visit the Writing Center in the Student Success Center, under the Resources tab in LoudCloud for tips on improving your paper and SI score.
Late Policy
The university’s policy on late assignments is 10% penalty PER DAY LATE. This also applies to late DQ replies.
Please communicate with me if you anticipate having to submit an assignment late. I am happy to be flexible, with advance notice. We may be able to work out an extension based on extenuating circumstances.
If you do not communicate with me before submitting an assignment late, the GCU late policy will be in effect.
I do not accept assignments that are two or more weeks late unless we have worked out an extension.
As per policy, no assignments are accepted after the last day of class. Any assignment submitted after midnight on the last day of class will not be accepted for grading.
Communication
Communication is so very important. There are multiple ways to communicate with me:
Questions to Instructor Forum: This is a great place to ask course content or assignment questions. If you have a question, there is a good chance one of your peers does as well. This is a public forum for the class.
Individual Forum: This is a private forum to ask me questions or send me messages. This will be checked at least once every 24 hours.
