There are more than three professional nursing organizations that interest me. I am already a member or involved with the Society of Pediatric Nurses (SPN), and the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN) due to CCRN classes, testing and certification; and plan on attending the National Teaching Institute (NTI) and Critical Care exposition in May because of this association. So, for the sake of this discussion, I am going to explore nursing organizations I hope to learn more about as my career progresses as an APRN. The American Nursing Credentialing Center (ANCC), the American Nursing Informatics Association (ANIA), and the Society of Pediatric Cardiovascular Nurses (SPCN).

The ANCC is a subsidiary of the American Nurses Association (ANA) that is known for high quality credentialing and certification programs. The seek to recognized both individual and organizational excellence in terms of specialties, high quality patient care, and magnet recognition. They have multiple different programs and purpose, and requirements differ based on program. What piqued my interest is that the ANCC offers one of the few certifications related to nursing informatics. They offer the Informatics Nursing Certification that requires a current RN license, and multiple clinical hours or having completed a graduate degree in informatics. The ANCC also offers many awards, scholarships and study aids to help promote education and the advancement of the nursing field.

The American Nursing Informatics Association (ANIA) more specific to informatics. The ANIA seeks to “advance nursing informatics through education, research and practice in all roles and settings” (ANIA, 2021). Membership serves to be a good way to network, they offer continue education, give access to up to date research and the Journal of Informatics Nursing, have annual conferences, and have discussion forums for members. For membership requirements you just have to have a valid license and diploma in nursing, or being a current student of nursing, and you must pay the membership fee.

The Society of Pediatric Cardiovascular Nurses (SPCN) is the smallest of the mentioned professional organizations but is most specifically related to my current role as a pediatric cardiovascular ICU nurse. The SPCN currently has about 400 members and serves as a great resource for those within the specialty to communicate with one another and share information and resources (SPNC, n.d.). The requirements are simply a membership fee. The SPCN serves a very small niche specialty, so it interests me to be able to connect with those within the same field.

In my current work, care is so specific to this population, and the pediatric population as a whole is understudied. I feel the continued education and research related to nursing practice is of upmost importance. With advancements in technology and continued advancements in research and education I feel this will continue to serve and benefit the patient population. I feel that all three of the mentioned organizations do a great job in supporting the advancement, continued educations, and dissemination of resources and information. All of these professional organization contribute to the advancement of the nursing field as a whole, and goals and motivation for doing so are very much in line with my own career interests and worldviews.

There are more than three professional nursing organizations that interest me. I am already a member or involved with the Society of Pediatric Nurses (SPN), and the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN) due to CCRN classes, testing and certification; and plan on attending the National Teaching Institute (NTI) and Critical Care exposition in May because of this association. So, for the sake of this discussion, I am going to explore nursing organizations I hope to learn more about as my career progresses as an APRN. The American Nursing Credentialing Center (ANCC), the American Nursing Informatics Association (ANIA), and the Society of Pediatric Cardiovascular Nurses (SPCN).

The ANCC is a subsidiary of the American Nurses Association (ANA) that is known for high quality credentialing and certification programs. The seek to recognized both individual and organizational excellence in terms of specialties, high quality patient care, and magnet recognition. They have multiple different programs and purpose, and requirements differ based on program. What piqued my interest is that the ANCC offers one of the few certifications related to nursing informatics. They offer the Informatics Nursing Certification that requires a current RN license, and multiple clinical hours or having completed a graduate degree in informatics. The ANCC also offers many awards, scholarships and study aids to help promote education and the advancement of the nursing field.

The American Nursing Informatics Association (ANIA) more specific to informatics. The ANIA seeks to “advance nursing informatics through education, research and practice in all roles and settings” (ANIA, 2021). Membership serves to be a good way to network, they offer continue education, give access to up to date research and the Journal of Informatics Nursing, have annual conferences, and have discussion forums for members. For membership requirements you just have to have a valid license and diploma in nursing, or being a current student of nursing, and you must pay the membership fee.

The Society of Pediatric Cardiovascular Nurses (SPCN) is the smallest of the mentioned professional organizations but is most specifically related to my current role as a pediatric cardiovascular ICU nurse. The SPCN currently has about 400 members and serves as a great resource for those within the specialty to communicate with one another and share information and resources (SPNC, n.d.). The requirements are simply a membership fee. The SPCN serves a very small niche specialty, so it interests me to be able to connect with those within the same field.

In my current work, care is so specific to this population, and the pediatric population as a whole is understudied. I feel the continued education and research related to nursing practice is of upmost importance. With advancements in technology and continued advancements in research and education I feel this will continue to serve and benefit the patient population. I feel that all three of the mentioned organizations do a great job in supporting the advancement, continued educations, and dissemination of resources and information. All of these professional organization contribute to the advancement of the nursing field as a whole, and goals and motivation for doing so are very much in line with my own career interests and worldviews.

Regulatory or Certification Agency That Defines the Scope

The National League for Nursing (NLN) is responsible for certification of the Nurse Educator program. MSN students certified by the NLN become Nursing Certified Nurse Educator (Jackson & Halstead, 2016). The NLN defines the scope of Certified Nurse Educators and strengthens the use of the NLN’s recognized core competencies in nursing education practice (Jackson & Halstead, 2016). NLN Core Competencies define the scope of nurse educator practice and act as an evidence-based framework for curricular design in nurse educator programs. The NLN for Certified Nurse Educator designation recognizes academic nursing education as a specialty field of nursing practice and as an advanced practice role within professional nursing.

Professional Nursing Organizations Identified as the Most Influential in Advancing the Scope and Influence of Advanced Nursing

The National League for Nursing (NLN) is the premier professional organization for nurse faculty, schools of nursing, and leaders in nursing education in the United States. It represents nursing education in institutions of higher learning and healthcare organizations (NLN, 2020).  NLN advances the specialty field of nursing education through professional development programs, research, nurse educator certification, student exam services, public policy, and networking (NLN, 2020). Consequently, NLN members enjoy various benefits such as extensive opportunities for continuous education, networking, and professional development. NLN’s professional development activities offer numerous and varied paths to help nurse educators in education and practice teach in complex educational and health care systems. Furthermore, NLN aligns education and practice and fosters leadership development for senior administrators and those who wish to be in leadership positions (NLN, 2020). It also promotes diversity and inclusivity through its professional development offerings. NLN funds nursing education research, which furthers the scholarship of teaching and supports evidence-based nursing education.

The North Carolina Nurses Association (NNCA) is a professional nursing organization in my state, North Carolina. The NNCA is dedicated to the ever-changing needs of RNs in North Carolina. It promotes professional growth and experiences, informs members, and advocates for all North Carolina residents’ health and well-being by offering opportunities for members to learn, connect, and excel (NCNA, 2020). The NCNA has a commission, the Commission on Advanced Practice Nursing (CAPN). The NCNA Board of Directors created the CAPN to bring together the collective voices of all APRNs within NCNA (NCNA, 2020). The commission addresses issues related to APRNs and the overall mission of the organization. NCNA members enjoy a wide array of benefits, such as exceptional continuing education courses at low or no cost and stimulating networking opportunities. They also access inspiring events to help them remain at the forefront of nursing knowledge and information.

Another influential professional organization is the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP). AANP is a professional nursing organization in the U.S for all NPS and students undertaking NP programs. AANP’s focus is to empower NPs to improve quality health care through practice, advocacy, education, research, and leadership (AANP, 2018). Besides, it is dedicated to empowering NPs to offer outstanding patient care. AANP is regarded as the voice of NPs. It empowers its members to be at the forefront in advocating for their profession and their patients’ safety. AANP membership comes with numerous benefits, including education opportunities and professional development, and networking opportunities through seminars and conferences (AANP, 2018). AANP continuously advocates for the removal of practice barriers that limit NPs full scope of practice in all states (AANP, 2018).

Nurse Educator

An advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) refers to any individual who has a master or doctoral degree in any nursing field.  APRNs are mostly primary care providers who are always at the forefront of ensuring the public receive preventive care services (Swan et al., 2015). They are charged with chronic disease management, illness diagnosis, advising the public on health issues and keeping themselves updated through continuous education. This paper aims to present the future role of a nurse educator, outline three professional nursing organizations and discuss an evolving issue in nursing and its effect on the scope of practice.

Future Nursing Role

The anticipated future role is that of a nurse educator. In the role, clinical abilities will be combined with responsibilities related to documenting outcomes of the educational process, evaluating learning, teaching and guiding learners, developing programs of study and designing curricula (Englebright, 2017). Additionally, the role will cover helping students and practicing nurses establish learning limitations, strengths and needs as well as selecting learning opportunities that support their strengths and overcome limitations. The duties will also revolve around writing grant proposals, peer-reviewing materials, and speaking at nursing conferences.  Lastly, it is expected that advising students, engaging in leadership roles that add value to the academic community, and engaging in scholarly work will also fall in the future scope of practice.

Regulations and Certifications

Venturing into the nursing educator career requires one to acquire a master’s degree covering topics like student counseling, curriculum development adult education techniques and principles of learning (Trinkoff et al., 2015). Secondly, one can earn a doctoral degree and if the postgraduate degree is not related to nursing education, one can obtain a Certification for Nurse Educators after being in employment for two years or more. The certification is offered by The National League for Nurses after one completes their masters or doctoral degree. The certification is not mandatory but it indicates that one has excelled in the field of nurse education and offers more work opportunities (Trinkoff et al., 2015). It is also essential to accrue clinical experience by working in various healthcare settings to help in learning challenges inherent in nursing.  A nurse educator is expected to possess excellent communication skills, exhibit an ability to critically think and solve problems, adapt to potentially challenging situations and display creativity.
