I chose to look at “Economic abuse: Preventing the partner from getting a job, or demanding the partner work longer hours or get a second job. Making the partner ask for money. Not letting the partner have access to family income” (Power and Control Wheel, n.d.). Economic struggles can cause plenty of marriage or relationship problems. Working long hours and having income struggles already puts a large amount of stress on an individual. When mixing alcohol into the equations these problems can escalate rapidly. All 8 of the topic in the wheel will result in some form of partner violence. Alcohol can make the situation worse such as drinking with stress or a form of anger can cause fights and other problems in a relationship. Alcohol affects judgment, reduces inhibition, and increases aggression. By altering the brains normal function one wrong word or action can cause someone to have intense aggression and when mixing economics into it there is a strong possibility of partner violence. Emotional abuse is common in relationships with those individuals who struggle with alcohol. Alcohol disrupts a person’s ability to think rationally conversations and situations may escalate and this can result in some form of partner violence.

I will be going over the Intimidation Section of the Power and Control Wheel. Intimidation actions can include looks, gestures, welding weapons, destroying property and more. This creates fear in the victim. This can be exacerbated by alcohol. Alcohol causes loss of inhibitions and self control. This may make the abuser say or do more actions to intimidate the victim. It may even lead to actual violence and acting on the threats while under the influence of alcohol.

So alcohol can cause these threats and actions worse due to the effects of being under the influence of alcohol. Individual personalities can affect how alcohol influences someone. If someone is already violent, controlling, and threating when sober then it would be likely to be worst when under the influence of alcohol. Which is why these situations may lead to more aspects on the Power and Control Wheel and/or cause more detrimental violence then when sober.

If the victim is drinking as well this may cause a bigger altercation or worst depending on the situation and individual personalities. The Power and Control Dynamic may be threatened in the perpetrators eyes and lead to exacerbated threats or violence. In the end it seems like alcohol may cause this dynamic or any other situation that could lead to violence worst.
