Title: NURS 6003 Academic Success and Professional Development Plan Part 2: Strategies to Promote Academic Integrity and Professional Ethics

Strategies to Promote Academic Integrity and Professional Ethics

Ethical conduct is essential at all levels of academic and professional conduct. Adherence to the required conduct ensures that nursing students and practitioners are free from ethical malpractice. The purpose of this section is to analyze the connection between integrity, professional practices, and scholarly ethics.

Part 1: The Connection between Academic and Professional Integrity

Explanation for the Relationship between Academic Integrity and Writing

Nursing students utilize many sources to expand their knowledge. Common sources include books, journal articles, and government/organizational publications. Academic integrity is characterized by honesty in a student’s work (writing). As a result, adherence to the established academic integrity principles requires students to acknowledge ideas from the authors of various resources (Darr, 2019). A suitable example of this adherence is citing and referencing books and journal articles a student uses to complete an assignment.

Explanation for the Relationship between Professional Practices and Scholarly Ethics

Nurses influence practice change by implementing scientific research in nursing practice. Combined with clinical expertise and patients values and preferences, scientific research forms the foundation of evidence-based practice (Li et al., 2019). Consequently, scientific (scholarly) sources should be ethical to influence the desired professional practice. Scholarly ethics is characterized by accuracy, honesty, and clarity (adequately researched and clear) of ideas.

Contribution of Grammarly, Turnitin, and Paraphrasing to Academic Integrity

Grammarly helps nursing professionals and other scholars to correct mistakes in their work. Besides, it has an option for checking plagiarism. Scholars primarily use Turnitin to ensure that the work submitted for research or classroom assignments is plagiarism-free. Paraphrasing is the art of rewriting other researchers’ ideas using their own words (Darr, 2019). Jointly, these scholarly tools and techniques promote academic integrity by enhancing the correctness of information and ensuring that it has not been previously submitted as someone else’s work.

Section 2: Strategies for Maintaining Integrity at Work

Academic Work as a Student of the MSN Program

An effective strategy for maintaining integrity at work as a student is observing all the academic guidelines related to assignments and research. As Perkins et al. (2020) noted, plagiarism denotes academic dishonesty, which must be avoided by all permissible means. As a result, I will ensure that all my assignments are plagiarism-free and have been paraphrased appropriately. Information sourced from other scholars should be cited and referenced accordingly.

Professional Work as a Nurse

To pursue integrity and ethics as a nurse throughout my career, I will adhere to the established ethical principles of nursing practice. For instance, nurses are obliged to provide safe and quality care and advocate for patient needs (Nsiah et al., 2019). Providing such care requires compassion, credibility, and trust between patients and providers. Besides, I will adhere to organizational and governmental policies regulating workplace conduct and general nursing conduct.

Resources and Approaches to Use as a Student and a Professional

As a student, essential tools include writing support tools such as Grammarly, Turnitin, and SafeAssign. They will ensure that I produce original content and do not breach any academic ethics principle. The most reliable approaches are information paraphrasing and crediting outside sources. As a nursing professional, the same tools and approaches will be vital since I will still be conducting research and disseminating information to various organizations. Always, I will be guided by the professional code of ethics for nurses.

Conclusion

Integrity and ethics are mandatory as a student and professional. As a result, nursing students should know what ethical conduct entails for students and professionals. In this section, I have explained the relationship between academic integrity and professional ethics. I have also explained the resources and strategies I will use to pursue integrity and ethics in academics and nursing practice.

Part 1: Writing Sample: The Connection Between Academic and Professional Integrity

Guaranteeing integrity in writing can be challenging. However, an author can still maintain integrity by writing using his or her own words with the message being passed remaining the same. Integrity in writing means correctly rephrasing ideas with your own words and understanding while acknowledging the original source.  In American Academic English, the standards in writing are to paraphrase and give a citation to acknowledge the source. Writing is one of the crucial parts of academic activities because a student gets to express their understanding of concepts and ideas of what they have learned (American Psychological Association, 2020). However, the writing down process is guided by standards and principles so that the information is well organized and presented. The writing process therefore enhances academic integrity by letting the students to lay their understanding in an acceptable manner to meet professional standards.

Professional practices are clear code of conduct and behaviors of a certain professional. They enhance honesty and integrity to promote one’s professional practice. Scholarly ethics involves observing high ethical standards, academic integrity, and enhancing transparency in research, writing and the general coursework.  Scholarly ethics and professional practices have a good relationship and the two top mutually affect each other (Emmerich, 2019). For example, it is presumed that if a person has observed scholarly ethics, they will state high levels of professional practice. Strategies to promote academic integrity highly rely on how an individual can maintain quality professional practices.

The use of Grammarly, Turnitin, and paraphrasing is important in academic writing. Grammarly makes sure that sentences are well constructed, the idea is the same and overlaying ones are cleared, and the ideas flow perfectly. Paraphrasing and safe assign ensures that a student does not plagiarize work (William, 2018). These tools promote integrity by ensuring that the original idea is expressed, and the writer has cited and referenced their work. The tools give essential feedback about the student’s capability to write incorporating suggestions that are laid down to understand better the academic writing standards for future writing.

PART 2: Strategies for Maintaining Integrity of Work

Part two

To maintain integrity and uphold high ethical standards in my writing as a student, I will use the right academic writing tools such as Grammarly and Safe Assign. Grammarly is best for checking text against internet sources as well as other student papers. Grammarly also makes suggestions based on artificial intelligence to help the learner improve their grammar and avoid wordiness. I will use Safe Assign to avoid quoting text verbatim by checking an index of millions of papers that have been submitted to global academic databases, against one’s paper (Walden Office of Student Affairs. (n.d.). Using these tools will help me ensure that I haven’t intentionally or inadvertently quoted text from other people’s work.  Additionally, I will cite all sources used to acknowledge the ideas I get from other authors. This will be possible by citing all the quotes and the ideas displayed properly. I would also paraphrase my work ensuring that the message does not lose its initial meaning. Paraphrasing and citing sources promotes academic integrity and it aids in avoiding copying someone else’s ideas in writing (Williams, 2018).

The basis of professional practice as a nurse is outlined in the American Association of Nurses’ professional code of practice (2015). The code was developed to guide nurses on how to deliver quality care, and align with the ethical code of the profession. Some of the ethical principles from ANA’s code that I will exercise in my profession are integrity, respecting human dignity, upholding the rights of privacy, observing the rights of human research, and contributing to research and scholarship (ANA, 2015). Other ways to maintain a high professional code of conduct is being honest, transparent, and creating a friendly environment for my patients and coworkers. Occasionally, I will visit conferences that talk about professional practices and nursing code of conduct to enhance integrity and professional ethics assignment (Williams, 2018). Moreover, I intend to use research to ensure that I practice evidence-based practice and commit to continued quality improvement.
